Great to see an excellent community with members who are serious about building business. I am sure MJ’s book and your advices are going to change many of our lives.
I work (day job) in manufacturing sector. Other day I was searching for suppliers for certain industrial products and I noticed that most of the search results are dominated by classifieds sites like Alibaba and couple of directories.
The problem with classifieds sites in the search results is that they all displayed hundreds of ads from individuals and resellers and none of the ads were from trusted brands. The directory sites had listed established suppliers and trusted manufacturers but there were only few listings with no product information.
I was thinking of creating a hybrid site where I will write about a type of product and list all the suppliers below. The site will also let the suppliers to list all their products under each product category for which they will have to pay a monthly subscription fee. The advantage is that the site will not be flooded with free ads like in case of classified sites. Or I could list all the products for free and sell leads to suppliers.
I might need a custom script to build the site. If I can’t afford a custom script I could integrate a blog with a directory/classifieds script and modify according to my needs.
One problem I could see right away is that most of the companies have established vendors and unless the company needs a new product the purchase department will not start looking for new vendors. Also large industrial suppliers/manufactures mostly depend on traditional advertising and offline sales methods and hence it could be difficult to convince them to advertise online or buy leads.
What are your thoughts? Any input is highly appreciated.
