Yep, data collection. They basically gather all sorts of data on its users behaviors, locations, demographics, and sell that.

They get lots of eyeballs. Same as search engines.

Businesses pay to get in front of eyeballs.

Social networks make money from business owners who want to promote their businesses. Millions of business owners head towards Facebook, Twitter like platforms because they are the place where it is pretty easy to advertise their businesses

Social media platforms actually massively help in creating leads which in turn are turned into sales by companies if right customer acquisition strategies are followed and implemented. You know it how large audience does Facebook, Twitter like social media platforms have. From kids to old age people everyone does use them. So why wouldn't business owners take advantage of such opportunity where your brand is made visible to millions at low cost.

ITs basically a search engine.

People come on and fill out info about themselves.

They interact with different pages and people.

Then guys like you and me can buy ads that say “show to all people who live in xyz amd age 30-40 and who are divorced “

Tai lopez did an interview with tom from myspace where he did a good job explaining this.
