As of right now, social networks are the ideal way to communicate and catch up with friends, family, business, etc. especially across continents and countries. And there's not a whole lot somebody could do to change that without actually going to something bigger than social networks.
In the next 50 years or sooner we could see a technological/economic renaissance of sorts where every human has access to a computer. Whether that's individual laptops or shared computer access facilities in countries lagging behind the human development index, it seems like a possibility.
How do you get someone removed from their own profile, which has their friends' newsfeeds, the actual news, pictures, etc? You don't remove all of that stuff, you simply transfer the platform which provides that - and not onto another aggregate social media website.
Instead, provide every single human being their own website, free of charge.
The domain? .human
Which would also be in effect for the word 'human' in every language on earth:
.人类 (chinese)
.manna (icelandic)
and so forth.
There may need to be subdomains because there are so many people with the same name. Either arbitrary or with specific relevance to location.
For example:
JaneDoe.human
JaneDoe.unitedstates.human
JaneDoe112233.human
JaneDoe.asia.human
The problem: There are too many messaging apps, social media websites, and phone networks. Most are restricted by location (such as your phone company not allowing you to make international calls without a plan or charging you big $$$), language, or governments. In addition, your privacy is invaded at every turn, the company usually "owns" what you write, big brother is keeping tabs on your conversations. And of course, some may sell your information, you are privy to losing sensitive information like credit cards,
Solution: To disrupt it, uniform it. Provide a free website to every human, on its own network, where they can build their own portfolio and contact anyone on earth, free of charge. Language is automatically translated.
Very basic features: Full name, country, messaging system, and group messaging system.
How to start: crowd fund initially in richer countries, and then build a donation platform to finish building in remaining countries. once the system is running, use remaining donations to create satellites to project a special Wifi everywhere in the world allowing access to .human domains only. Then fund R&D for special subsidized tablets which can access .human only, somehow under $1/tablet.
Wikipedia can raise $80 million+ a year to host all the world's information. I guess you could call communication a "fundamental human right" and we should be able to communicate across the world without restraint, overwatch of what we say, and fully own it without being subject to having an account. People would fully own their .human extension of themselves.
There are many, many problems with this and I contemplated whether or not to post, because I know it is "out there". But to challenge the oil giants of the digital world like Facebook, ideas may need to be a bit beyond the present moment, and use technology/economies of scale which aren't quite developed yet. Been really engaged with the intricacies of my current project so this was a much needed creative break.
Back to work for now, but feel free to discuss the viability of such a project (or not) as well as how it could be changed or modified to be either more realistic. Or just
