Growth Hacker Marketing

Growth hacker marketing was integral to the success of Facebook, Airbnb, Hotmail etc. These are all billion dollar companies built recently by doing things that traditional marketers are not very good at. Those billion dollar startups did not know traditional marketing at all.

A growth hacker is someone who throws out traditional marketing and replaces it with what is; testable, track-able and scale-able. This is contrary to what traditional marketers do (branding, mind-share etc.). Growth hackers pursue sustainable growth and as a result of this, have grown companies from nothing to something.

Four Phases of Growth Hacker Marketing

  1. Product-Market Fit (Instagram)
  2. Growth is Hacked (Uber)
  3. Virality (Apple)
  4. Retention & Optimization (Dropbox - Twitter)
The Growth Hacker Mindset

Growth Hacking is a 'mindset' which requires you to continuously ask 'am I doing this because this is what a marketer does, or am I doing this because it's going to drive users'? This distinction defines why Growth Hackers are in the business to grow. Therefore, Growth Hackers 'make it up as they go along' and they devise tricks to acquire and retain customers, rather than to do what 'marketing is supposed to do'.

All marketers should be growth hackers. It is the intersection between marketing and technology. It is a must for startups as it blends to better serve marketing ecosystem.

Yes they should, because all growth hackers are marketers (whether they openly admit it or not ;) )

Good point. Suppose that depends if the business is Internet based business. Probably there exists growth hacking opportunities in other market spaces. G

Maybe I should have placed a hyphen in the critical place to denote that the internet part was attached to the action of being a guerilla-marketeer, as in the internet is the medium.

So all that you guys mean to say here is
A growth hacker gets ahead of all the competition without following the usual marketing trend and gets the product viral?
Did I understand it the right way?

Here is a great example of Growth Hacking - how Airbnb "growth-hacked" its way into success in the early days by automatically cross-postings its listings on Craigslist: http://andrewchen.co/how-to-be-a-growth-hacker-an-airbnbcraigslist-case-study/

Scroll down to the middle where it says "Airbnb, a case study" to read the cast study.

Excellent example and also illustrates the power of partnering. thank you. G

Yes. And, it depends. Growth hacking is getting a bit "over-hyped" these days. It basically means taking advantage of tools/technology and thinking outside of the box to help propel your growth.

Agree with Pranaya that growth hacking as a term has become over-hyped and something of a buzzword for those who don't understand it to use. The truth is that growth hacking as a method has been happening long before it became the "cool" way to take your business to the next level. I'd bet that just about every one of us in this community has been thinking outside the box, experimenting, scaling up or just throwing out what doesn't work long before it was the "thing" to do.

Don't though all that as growth hacking bashing. I think it's an awesome way to grow your business and as much as I hate buzzwords, it has lead to some great case studies being out there in the wild like mentioned above.
