Dennis Quaid has apparently made a documentary about CMEs (Coronal Mass Ejection). Here he talks about it in an interview. Eventually one these events is going to put half the planet back in to the stone-age.

A thought: books that are least useful to you are the ones you'd find the easiest to read.

(but not all "hard to read" books are useful either...)

Stay with me on this:
  • If you know nothing of the topic, it'll be a hard read.
  • If you know everything on the topic, it'll be easy to read but you already know the topic.
  • The most entertaining stories only give you a top of the trees view point
  • Getting into the forest, diving deeper, is by definition harder.
  • A textbook that forces you to do a case-study is hard to read.
  • A YouTube guru selling you his "course" that guarantees you sales in 3 hours is typically fraud.
If you find yourself looking for book summaries and unwilling to read the whole book because "it's too hard" or "it takes too long"... remember the tradeoff you are making. You are paying the price with your inability to capitalize on the application of knowledge! You can't apply what you barely know. Only dreamers think that deep, meaningful and highly profitable work happens on a "motivation". Instead, it takes discipline. This is why discipline = freedom.

The first year I got a job in Real Estate industry, I accidentally discovered this truth. I managed to get the job I was unqualified to do and before losing it, I had to learn - FAST. I needed technical knowledge, not the "guru" bullshit that wouldn't fly at a large and successful sophisticated business. The only "shortcut" I could see was to get textbooks! Quick search yielded a few results, I bought them fast, and then spent every single available hour reading, highlighting and trying to re-create Excel sheets to understand the concepts at a deeper level. Having gone through post-secondary education already, most people like me would have thought "yeah, finally done studying", and for me it became the opposite.

That was a long while ago and what prompted me to post this is the fact that I just bought another very dry textbook for almost $300 (which is a crazy price, when you think about it, but it's a textbook and authors do whatever they want, this includes taxes and shipping). I am genuinely both excited and frustrated at the same time. Frustrated that now I have to go deep into this book to find a few more nuggets to make me more competitive in our business. Excited because I know only two ways that can happen:
1) books we read
2) people we meet

If you are young and reading this, congratulations! Understanding this can make you a fortune.

P.S. For those who got @MJ DeMarco books on audio, this concept applies. My advice is to get the book and read it, highlight 10% of what you found most surprising, it's likely useful. Then apply what you learned. I imagine it being 10x harder to do that while listening to an audio book. While I do that too, I never do it with books that I want to later use for business.

Between 1931 and 1972, Georges Simenon wrote 113 stories about the fictional French detective Jules Maigret. These stories have been made in to numerous theatre, radio, film, and television productions. Gerard Depardieu recently starred in the 2022 film "Maigret". Because the "Maigret" character has been around so long, it enters the Public Domain in 2027.

The "Maigret" stories were very concise stories with simple plots. The "Maigret" character used an early (1930s) psychological approach to solving crimes, where he would try to put himself in to the mind of the criminal. At the time, this was different from the traditional evidence-based approach. Many people read the stories not to solve the crimes, but to put themselves in to the minds of the characters that existed in 50s/60s Paris.

Watching the 1960-1963 "Maigret" TV show is as much interesting to see how the production crews in 1960 thought the characters should be portrayed, then as they were portrayed. Watching the (1960s) TV shows themselves, they are basic to boring by today's standards. As France was still rebuilding post WW2, there is a certain charm seeing the police home in on a suspect while using payphones and taxis. Every single character smokes like a chimney, and some conversations are held in literal clouds of smoke.

"Maigret" has so far primarily been a British and French phenomena, there will probably be a lot of Western "Maigret" material being produced after he is in the Public Domain in 2027.

I think Nietzsche is hard to understand because he is very poetic and can’t be understood literally.

I would say Immanuel Kant has the most compatible epistemology for entrepreneurship and real life application. Because he solves a lot of complex issues with perception, ideas and action.

Someone can study a topic and invest countless hours but how valuable is that information if it never propels you beyond anything abstract and never gives you a psychological victory of any sort.

Heard this on a podcast recently.

Woman is looking for a donor for her baby and she is very pretty. However the donor must meet certain criteria and she wants natural insemination.

In order to meet her certain criteria, the potential man must fill out a form and take a 23andme DNA test and submit the results. The link provided is to take the test an affiliate link lol.

Her post gets 3 million hits.

Most likely an ingenious scam.

Honestly, it was a master class in how to drive traffic/eyeballs through controversy. The OP (who was later revealed to be a dude, not a woman) specifically stated "no Jewish heritage & no African heritage" ..... so by creating outrage, they drove even more eyeballs to the original post. Which led to more publicity. Then the "prove it" challenge by a seemingly innocuous 3rd party product (the 23&Me verification) supposedly led to an estimated $300k in referrals (I have no idea how this was calculated, don't come at me, this is someone else's conjecture & not verified as far as I know). I would love to see the actual numbers on what was generated but alas, that will probably never happen.

It seems like Apple has ceded the "simplicity" market to Chromebooks. Recent iMac and MacPro ads stress the power and interoperability of their products with busy backgrounds and "dark mode" apps, while Chromebook ads have a lot of whitespace and simple backgrounds.

The original "iMac" with it's 10-minute set-up time, from unboxing to internet, basically marketed it as an internet device. Chromebooks are internet devices. Macs are now "powerhouses" while Chromebooks use cloud services.

When times are tough, there is often a "flight to quality", because people don't want to waste their money on junk. Apple has benefitted from this in the past. If we have tough times now, I think the "powerful" Apple devices will just be too expensive. If there is a recession, I expect more people will choose either Microsoft or Google devices.

Pretty much, everything now and days is some sort of socially engineered con or ruse targeting your nervous system. LOL

Tell me about it, since I've got in marketing I see it everywhere now.

Of course I'm biased but seriously since I try to understand the world through marketing I actually have the feeling that I understand 90% of it.

Guess I'm on the producer side now.

This gym was PACKED every day from Jan 1st till yesterday.

I knew it would happen, just had to wait it out - the day everyone would quit.

I wish I had the before photo, every one of these machines was being used.
Had to wait for half the equipment etc.

But sure as every year, 90% have already given up.
