Day 5

What you ate the day before will impact your session the next morning.

I got to experience this today. I could feel my body struggling with the excess chocolate I ate yesterday.

I also changed up my breathing rhythm. For the last 4 days, I did something along the lines of; 5 seconds in, 3 seconds hold, 4 seconds out. Today I mixed that with simple slow in-and-out breathing - no holding. This made focusing on "the space in which thoughts arise" easier.

This brings me to an old suspicion I had, but abandoned as a kid - and it's that I randomly hold my breath throughout the day and it is contributing to my restlessness. Meditation should help with breath awareness, so let's see where it takes me.

For those with a Masterclass Subscription ( christmas present btw lol), there is a new Masterclass taught by Jon Kabat Zinn one of the most famous mindfulness writers in the world.

Jon Kabat-Zinn Masterclass Trailer

Oh nice, saw some talks of his a while back. I like his style, he’s pretty funny. Will check this out MasterClass has all kinds of stuff these days!

I should have emphasized in my observations post one more thing: don't expect that 60 days of meditation or practicing mindfulness/spirituality will turn you into a Zen master.

I mean, it's kind of obvious but it's also not. The progress won't be linear.

On some days you'll be way more chill than before and control your emotions better. You'll feel like "you got this." But the next day, the exact same situation may be very difficult again.

So you learn how to be consistent and persistent with your practice and you learn to feel okay even when it seems like you've "lost" the "powers" you've accumulated until now.

Even if you fail, I believe that merely acknowledging you "failed" at controlling yourself is still valuable in itself. In the end, it all comes back to practicing awareness, including awareness that you aren't aware or that you should have been more aware in that situation that happened 5 minutes ago.

As a side note, I struggled a lot during my practice today (day 61), which proves my point.

Thoughts 60 Days Later… it feels so good!

Literally! There’s a visceral difference between my start and finish that’s not contained to the mind.

You know those moments when you’ve noticed a slight smile on your face and have no idea how long it’s been there?

Or the times where you turn your head and look around for the reason or beauty that has you feeling awe and wrapped in enjoyment?

Or you sense a vibration of good energy spooling out from you?

It feels like those times for most of the day.

As far as the time aspects that @MTF and others have mentioned, I definitely agree. Seconds seem longer and my days feel shorter. Days shorter in the sense of how fast holiday or vacation time goes by and less like the short days of sunlight in these mountain wintry months. : )

My reaction time has slowed as well. I feel more of a pause. For instance, in working to allow others to complete full thoughts and take a few seconds before responding. I’ve also put more awareness into jumps to correct or match the other persons tone or level if it isn't positive. Every moment is a win here as I hold communication near the top for goals in life, and I’m far from a master!

I’ve also not kept a structured routine for when or where to meditate. This isn’t something I would necessarily recommend as it adds risk to start back at day 1. Had more evening meditations than I expected going in. This was in part to keep it convenient for my love and his morning routine as well! It worked well for us!

Before the 60 days I was pretty new to meditation, still a novice now, and likely to be for a long time! Incredibly thankful to be able to learn and practice!

To continue, I haven’t read Michael Singer’s books so I purchased them yesterday. Can't wait!

I’m not sure where meditation or mindfulness will take me… and that’s even more exciting.

Based on what you wrote above, you're gonna love them, particularly Untethered Soul. So many things were so logical, and yet, seemed so foreign to our feral brains. Let us know what you think... here is a discussion thread on Surrender Experiment which probably should be read after Untethered Soul.

Super peaceful session. At a point I stood up and walked a bit, because I was feeling a bit uncomfortable sitting.

Day 6

Didn't do this one in the morning. It was harder to get into it in the first 15 minutes, given that my mind had enough time to accumulate the day's trash before starting.

Day 21

Sometimes everything goes wrong. Today was one of those days.

First off, I woke up at 7 but felt sleepy still, so I decided to set a new alarm clock at 9.

Then, I woke up at 8:30 AM and started my session. My alarm clock went off at 9 AM interrupting me. Not too bad, as my thoughts were drifting away anyway.

Today I couldn't focus at all.

BUT that's okay. The only bad session is a skipped one

If you already spend 60 minutes a day on meditation then you might as well use the free help of a Meditation Master! Otherwise, most people are struggling to experience peace and happiness which then defeats the purpose of sitting down for one hour. You better use that time then to cook for your dear ones and make them happy!!So enjoy this video guyyys. I love it and use these Energy Transmissions to boost my practice literally every day!!

Day 4

Who am I? ( Question from "untethered soul") I am not my company. I use to feel good if my company is doing good, I feel bad if my company is doing bad. I am working on it to just observe my company and not to be my company. I wake up in the middle of the night and think about my company's problems. It is not healthy for me.

I am trying to let this feelings, thoughts go.....

Haven't managed to do 60 minutes yet. There is always something that gets in my way like a sudden change in temperature (gets hot suddenly) or feeling sleepy. I get drowsy on every session I have. Do you guys have any of those things come up? How many actually stay still for a whole hour without stretching or feeling some seriously uncomfortable sensations like heat and drowsiness?

Day 7, everything is fine.

I am changing the position a bit during the meditation. I sit on the floor or on the chair or I lie on the floor.
I think with practice it will get better.
I was told that heat is a good sign during a meditation, maybe you are releasing some inner tensions.

Well, I do carry a lot of tension, so you might be right on this one. The drowsiness though is what usually stops the meditation session. If I have head support, I will just fall asleep without realizing it and if there is no head rest, my head will keep bobbing slightly back and forth which breaks my concentration. I will try doing in this in the morning when my stress hormones are high just to see if I can keep myself awake.

Another peaceful session. I processed some emotions that I felt in the past. The first 40 or so minutes were great. The last 20 I started to lose focus a bit, but nothing big.

Both for me.

Heat: lower the temperature in the room, ventilate it well before meditation (I find it hard to meditate with an open window due to the noise outside), take a cold shower before your session, meditate naked or half-naked (I often meditate shirtless because I also get hot), change your position.

Drowsiness: struggled with this a lot, recently it's been better. Focus on improving your sleep quality first. I cut caffeine completely and also set up automatic night screen mode starting at 6 pm for my devices. Also, a cold shower before a session will raise your heart rate and possibly wake you up a little. You can also try rapid breathing or perform some exercises. Sometimes when I'm still half-awake before beginning my session I spend 10-20 minutes reading stuff on my phone (the bright screen helps wake up).

I don't drink coffee, but I think the main factor for feeling tired is the occasional sleep loss at night and eating a little too much junk food. I need to kick the sugar for sure. The only reason I don't get fat is because I fast for 16 hours almost every single day, but I still need to improve me food to have more energy.

Cold showers energize me, but because of thermogenesis process, I actually feel a little bit sleepy afterwards. I've been doing them for three months now and the cold water does not have the same effect as it used to when I first started. Let's just say it's not as 'shocking' as it used to be .

The other scenario is to simply do what I stated before, which is to wake up early while my body is in stress mode. For the next 30 days I will set the most annoying alarm noise in order to get myself up every morning and meditate for an hour.

This will only work if you get enough sleep. Otherwise you'll be up for a few minutes and then fall asleep during meditation as soon as you get a bit relaxed.

Try 30 minutes of strong/power yoga before meditation and you should be good to go. This will help your sleep as well and put all that excess sugar to good use lol. If you can get into it then repeat again in the evening.

Tea and chocolate also has caffeine. You mention too much junk food... If it means chocolate, you can actually get a lot of caffeine this way. And even if it's caffeine-free, then it definitely messes up your sleep and energy levels anyway.

@redshift is right. I don't meditate IMMEDIATELY after waking up. I go to the bathroom, do all the morning stuff, and then start meditating (so roughly 15-20 minutes after I wake up). If I tried right after waking up, I'd fall asleep for sure.

Tea doesn't have caffeine. If I do a ginger and cinnamon for example, I would have consumed no caffeine and that's the case with most teas (forget about the crappy commercial teas you see in super markets, I work in a botany garden so I've seen a lot of good and bad stuff). I think you are referring to green teas.

I'm not sure about chocolate though. I don't think it has caffeine, but regardless of the specifics, we all know that if there was heaven and hell for food, processed chocolate would be the anti-christ.

I have not thought about doing exercise before meditation. I never thought about it until now. Thanks for the tip :) Now I have to go meditate so I can relax and then sleep. Ahem :somber:

Technically "tea" is only camellia sinensis so black tea, green tea, pu-erh tea, oolong, etc. What you're referring to are infusions or herbal "teas" but not the "real" tea. Just like there can be chicory root coffee but it has nothing to do with the coffee plant.

I'm not sure about chocolate though. I don't think it has caffeine, but regardless of the specifics

Oh it sure has caffeine and dark chocolate has lots of it if you eat too much even if it's much healthier than processed crap :)

Both theobromine and caffeine are stimulants. People who are very sensitive to caffeine may experience insomnia if they eat dark chocolate or drink hot cocoa too close to bedtime.

I used to drink pu-erh tea in the morning and eat some dark chocolate during the day. I stopped doing that and generally started avoiding caffeine in any amount as much as I can and my sleep quality has improved.

I used to be half-awake for several mornings in a row when meditating (as reported in this thread). Now so far it's been fully-awake every morning since I made the changes. So definitely experiment with your daily habits as it's not only about your meditation but also health in general.

Report back. I want to see your report after meditating for an hour.

Day 10

I was producing music before this session, so instead of verbal thought loops - I was hearing my own music over and over. That said, I still got some good silence out of the session.
