Is there any other way for a newbie freelance copywriter to get work without using upwork and other freelancing websites?

Anything considered a "hustle" and not necessarily a CENTS-based Fastlane

Hi,
I am looking to become a freelance copywriter.
I was wondering if there any way for a teen freelance copywriter to get work initially without using freelancing websites.
Because the competition there is just way too high.

Moreover, I can't contact those clients directly to build a long-term relationship with them.

This is another reason why I wanna avoid those platforms.

Can I get some suggestions?

Reach out to anyone in your network that has a business and offer to do some free work. When you do get an opportunity, you have to invest everything you have. Don't be satisfied with producing minimally viable work, you have to blow your clients' expectations out of the water.

Then don't be shy about the work you've done. Showcase it on your social pages. Send links throughout the communities that Banjoa is referencing.

There isn't a shortcut, but this route is a lot more rewarding than fighting for pieces of meat on upwork.

No reason it should be tougher for a teen than someone older - maybe lack of life/niche experience, but nothing good research can't get past.

Having said that, I was going to say don't mention your age at all until people ask...

But then I thought of something...

You could make this work in your favor.

The best way to get clients is networking with successful entrepreneurs and marketers. And a lot of people are actually more keen to offer time and advice to a young kid who was already making moves towards being a success someday.

It makes them feel good to mentor someone showing characteristics of a go-getter while still so young. Many will see themselves in you.

You could totally leverage this.

What I'd do for you is reach out to successful people and (genuinely) ask for business/success advice, making it clear that you're a kid who wants to get an early start in life. Once you form a bit of a dialogue with them and they realize you're trying to break into copywriting, I imagine plenty would give you some simpler tasks to earn your chops, or introduce you to others who have work.

As you gain some real writing and marketing skills, they'll love introducing you to others.

Don't come across like you're only using them to find leads. You can learn a lot from these people if you're building relationships with the right ones, so respect their time and listen to what they have to tell you about life and business.

But if you're sincere, I don't see any reason NOT to use your age to your advantage while building inroads that might be less accessible to others.

Another way you could use your youth as a plus is to try to hook up with companies selling to your demographic - a young writer who knows marketing and understands their customers better than they do could be a real asset to them.

Good luck.

Thank you for the 3 tags!

I'm currently trying to find my own path to success. I'm pretty sure I found what made my proposals fail. I'm currently putting 100% focus on getting to nail it on upwork. Not much time to post on lex's challenge. But I'm still there no worries!

A secret...

The challenge is an action-fake anyway.

I made it 15 days so even those who don't make money only waste 15 days action-faking instead of 30 days with the Gary Halbert challenge.

Aha! But It contains some great nuggets of wisdom anyway! I'll read the last post when I get the time.

Thank you Lex ;)
