Been working my a$$ off for about the last 2 months. I have a pressure washing company and have been gaining great momentum and staying on task. This past week however things have gone south. I have had family come over for the holidays and have just been feeling off track. Slipping back into playing video games and haven't had my mind on business. Of course, a lot of this is due to family being around and interacting with them rather than thinking about business related stuff. How do you guys get your mind re focused after some time off? Also, how do you prevent burn-out or deal with it when it does happen?

Sleep one whole day and get fresh on the next day.

It was not even a conscious attempt to take a day off. I Just want to take a nap but it got so tired that I want to continue to sleep into dinner time. After dinner I am still tired to do work so I end up sleep early that night. Basically a day is gone.

It happened many times so understand that at least for me there is biological limit to work (business+ exercise + reading + balancing my trading portfolio once a weekday).

I do not know how the gurus could work 80-100 hours a week, on everyday without break. Either they are genetically gifted or I am mentally weak.

Need to find a way to remember your "WHY". Why did you get started?

I use a program that will automatically call my phone every day and read out my "why".

Spend a day reorganising. If you have had a whole week off then Sunday becomes the day you sit down and schedule your following week. Work out what needs doing and when.

Schedule everything in. From customer calls and marketing to picking up consumables for your business and booking in jobs. Once you have that done you just have to get through the first couple of days. Those are the hardest but just like muscle memory after a couple of days you will find yourself back to 'normality' again.

I go through this cycle on a regular basis. The hardest part is getting started as laziness has become the norm so you have to break the inertia that has created. It is basically a form of procrastination. Which means the hardest part is just getting started. Once you have it is much easier to continue.

It is estimated that it takes around 10% of a commercial aircraft's fuel supply just to take off and get to cruising altitude. It doesn't travel very far in that time compared with the total journey distance so that is a huge expenditure of energy for little forward gain. However that's the hardest part.

If you think of it in those terms it may be easier to overcome.

I would suggest you use a diary or software to organise everything and keep you accountable. I would recommend @LightHouse Trello thread if you don't already have a system in place. I use an extended form of it and also share my Trello with my life partner so she can nag me if she see's me slipping.

The simple answer is they don't. Don't believe all the stuff you see on Instagram. Hell most don't even manage their own posting.

Also a lot of their work is not taxing, as, once above a certain level, you can afford to employ others to do the heavy lifting. You then become the ideas guy, the person at the top of the organisation who directs the orchestra rather than playing the instruments.

Gerald Ratner said that becoming the head of his organisation was the easiest job he ever had. And he started on the shop floor.

Do something you are passionate about and burn out doesn’t exist. For example, I would rather work on my business than play video games. That’s how much I enjoy my business. Do I want to play video games? Yes, but I want to work on my business more.

It is neither. Working those hours is easy if you are passionate about what you do. Never feels like I am even working.

If you don’t know what I am talking about, then you have never done anything you are passionate about.

Really good tips man, thanks for sharing.

I have also recently been adopting this actual system of assigning tasks to actual "40 minute time slots". That way I can be sure the task gets done. Its just so much more efficient.

Good question, I have experienced this multiple times and it usually comes down to a few factors such as lack of sleep, fear of failure and mindset. I like what @RazorCut mentions about booking a full day to get organized. It's the only way to do it. But usually, that's a difficult task in itself!

I like to schedule my procrastination, allow myself to enjoy it fully until I'm just really sick of not getting stuff done. Perhaps it will be a specific date that I commit to and slot into my phone calendar and I call it something random like "Get back to work ASAP".

And a really great system is GTD which David Allen created, and there's also a book. It gives you a system to manage yourself whether you're tired, drunk, returning from a family vacay or emergency.

The idea is a merge of spending a full day to get everything out of your head and into a system, which can be managed on a simple piece of paper or using Trello as @Andy Black did. I use outlook for this, as it's connected to all my devices and links up to my calendar.

It takes some time getting the process down and setting up the system but it's well spent because it can cope with vacation time, emergencies and other things.

Good luck, and it always seems impossible until it's done.

or using Trello as @Andy Black did
I did mine in Google Calendar. That and Basecamp are my goto tools for organising myself.
