The desk on the right is my work desk. The left one is for video production, hence the big technicolor monitor. Gonna get organized within a month. Had to take a before picture (for the before and after versions) of it being in its messy state. Hard to believe any work gets done here...

Wow, didn't know you do video production.

I'm in college. Dorm room beginnings.

xRUp7Ot.jpg

The chair looks uncomfortable and painful to sit on though. I've the same type of chair except it's plastic with a little padding for the butt, but after more than 1.5 hrs of sitting down, it starts to hurt.

This thread is fascinating for some reason. Here's today's mess:

What were these buildings originally for and what's inside? I assume a desk and chair? Lights? Must be kinda hot and stuffy if there's no air-conditioning. And WiFi lol.
In the Netherlands since I've been here the last six years, there's not a lot of humidity, heat, and stuff like back home. It can be warm some days, but it's kind of nice most of the time. The doors are always left open for the most part. This area where I'm at there's little chapels on every corner. You find them in Germany as well. I assume people used to use them to pray, you will find crosses everywhere too when you're walking around down the paths everywhere.

There usually just pews, or benches, and I have to laugh, because I'm used to living in Michigan, where I would usually go to the Lake, the River, or an out door park. Here I can't find this, but you can find little chapels. They are not quite as religious people as back in the day, and I don't know that many people who go to church. They are basically selling old buildings that belonged to the Nuns, Priests, and they tear it apart and build a house inside of it, or apartments etc. I was in one of them on New Years in 2018, which was quite fascinating they were remodeling.

I just like them because, because their old, vintage, and I like the architecture. We don't have all these old buildings in America like here. I just like looking at all the artistry work.

I have been in the women's museum they have, that's quite fascinating as well with everything through the time.

There are lots of nice beer gardens, flower gardens, castles, and stuff around the Netherlands and Germany. I go walk by one quite often. My dentist is by another one, and inside some type of building off of the old castle.

I am in the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Ha ha...I tease about that all the time. I'm not used to having a Queen and King over me instead of a President.

I might have to go out and take some photographs of the buildings and bunkers so you can see them. lol The one in that photograph is a small chapel outside of a bigger church, that has a huge cemetery. I have to laugh because I had to learn the etiquette of not walking anywhere but the path, because in our culture, we just walk on grass, and we're not so good at respecting those who have passed. They have long graves and gravel paths. They clean up their cemeteries different as well.

There's a bunch of wooden short pews in there, candles to light if you want to pray, and a book there. They're all different, I just find it fascinating for whatever reason I can ride my bicycle around various streets and sit in one, and It's kind of different than at home in Michigan.

It really doesn't smell bad in them because they usually do a good job around here keeping the neighborhood quite clean. Usually there is fresh flowers. I have to laugh, because a bouquet of roses is much cheaper here than America. The women usually do have fresh flowers most of the year and no complaints from the men. They are affordable. They're more organized, structured, and creative with their yards than most American's. I wouldn't know what to do with designing bushes like they do. I'm quite impressed all they do.

Well in the Bunker it's quite dark, of course kind of spooky, and you can see the rooms people were in during the war. It might be a little musty and damp, but like I stated, they go in their and keep it clean, because it's by the Trappist Monks. Which there is a nice garden to walk through their, a pig farm, and the Trappist Monk Entrepreneurs who will sell you the fresh meat, and other natural products.

There's also monuments marking the crash sites of the planes from WWII and a bit of information about them. So you might not see the plane, but the field where it's landed, with their names and what culture they were from.

The American's and Canadians liberated the Netherlands. I have been learning quite a lot about that time.

They have these weird triangle looking concrete barriers you see in Germany and Belgium they used to keep people out of along with Tanks I think. I have been in the Anne Frank Museum and the house she lived in, in Amsterdam, that was quite fascinating itself.

The funny thing is my Grandfather was in WWII and was shot in the leg in Belgium, so I guess it is kind of neat being over here and seeing a lot of stuff related to that time.

They do have an American Cemetery for the soldiers. I just think it gives me kind of the real feeling for my novel. lol It kind of is like putting yourself in the characters shoes, and of course the feeling, emotion, the imagination starts going and what it might be like in the experience. It gets you thinking and being creative.

Ha..ha..well in the Netherlands here, we have all these little buildings on every corner you can write in and no one ever bothers you.

There's all kinds of bunkers, etc around here to get ideas to write poetry, novels, and short-stories. WWii left overs. Laptop works good to travel around the wilderness or tablet. I've walked around the grave yard a lot, because one of my chapters actually involve a cemetery.
I do the same thing. I work in cafes a lot because I like to meet people.

I think I'm going to do some more of that this summer. I know J.K. Rowling did the same thing. She got some of her ideas from such places.

Amazing writeup.....the thing is, Europe's architecture for some reason always comes across as very romantic and nostalgic...just look at those old buildings in any European country. Would be great if some day, you can take pics of those "buildings and bunkers" lol

Such a quiet little area that chapel stands.....

Thank You. I'll give it a few more weeks for the flowers and stuff to bloom, it kind of just looks more beautiful when everything is in bloom. Very nice.

This is such a cool post!

Since I am mostly laptop bound myself too, I used to work from home.
But it is so easy to get distracted or not focus.

Currently I am using the facilities of 3 big "flexwork / co-work offices) and its SUCH a huge change in productivity and atmosphere.

So I fully agree with OP referring to @biophase 's "Change your Environment".

My home office and my office have both changed dramatically. Won't have the actual office much longer so I re-did my home office a few months ago but it isn't complete enough for a photo. Everything is motorized, cabled, and mood lighting everywhere(screens are all floated and everything else is bluetooth now as well). will try to post soon, Thanks Bara!

Off topic, but I always enjoy your write ups so much and notice how we view things completely different (I am assuming due to country of origins and its contrast), but absolutely love it. Thank you for taking that time!

I enjoy sharing the experience. I believe it is stepping out of one culture and if you're used to that one culture all your life, it's literally walking into another world. When you're from America most people just dream of coming here.

I believe when I was 18, my dream was seeing the world, writing about it, and taking photographs, so I wrote back than. Never did I believe at the time I would be here.
I am from the Area with Holland, Michigan. This is the Holland I knew all my life.

There a little outdated as I mentioned before.

I lived North of Holland in the next town, but I had worked in Holland, Michigan, did my internships there, and had some friends from there over the years.
I don't have any Dutch in my family.
But I've worked for the Dutch over the years. No one speaks Dutch.
I do have to laugh. You get a fine if you cut tulips or pick someone's tulips with out their permission. Unless they've changed it again.

Whoa. What size monitor is that @Rabby?

It's a 49" TV that I mounted to the wall. It stays connected to my laptop's docking station.

I found that the pixel density of the monitors was getting too high for me, and tiring my eyes out by rendering certain things too small (despite changing display settings, etc). The TV is better on this front because it's the same resolution (HD) but greater surface area.

Let's break this nightmare down!

1. &Pizza box... writing loads of javascript creates an inexplicable hunger that can only be satiated with the crusty goodness of &Pizza.

2. Monsters, Iced Expressors, and other caffeine-based beverages. I am literally a human compiler that turns caffeine into software.

3. Unscripted physical copy. When I feel really down and hopeless, I have selected pages that I turn to to help me slap myself back into rational thinking.

4. VS Code and StackOverflow. The bane of my existence and the ticket to freedom. This is where the magic (presumably) happens. On this rare occurence my VS Code screen isn't riddled with red underlines.

5. Ultra shitty keyboard. I like my cheap plastic keyboard. It's loud and the sound of the keys clicking keeps me going.

So yea, one man's heaven, most men's hellscape. But the organization of my environment is irrelevant. All that matters is those lines of code.

How long did you take to accumulate all these cans and bottles? 3 days? Being a minimalist guy, I've a very strong urge to get inside that room and clean the **** up, so that by the end of it, only the monitor and keyboard remains, and the books and devices are hidden away.

Three days sounds about right. I've cleaned it up many times, and it just returns to this state. So eventually I accepted the inevitable and just.. let it go.
