What does the average family do with all that extra space in a house more than double the size?

If you don't have a big house, how are you going to fit all the things that you don't actually need?

Going away from millennials for a moment... it's 2:04am for me and I'm up working on my business. I was making good headway on a challenge I was facing. So it's all good, feeling all motivated. Then I came across another challenge I need to solve. It did take the wind out of my sails a bit. I know I have to push through, compartmentalise what I need to do, solving one problem at a time, but gah it's a bit annoying lol. Just wanted to share that.

I made some decent money recently from a big deal, so I went to the mall to see what I could buy as a little experiment.

There was literally nothing I wanted to buy. Just a bunch of overpriced plastic crap from China that I don't need.

I didn't buy anything. Though I will need a new phone relatively soon. Probably will just get a used Huawei for a decent price.

My only real personal expenses are food, rent, and gym. My personal belief is that you have to be motivated by more than money for this business stuff. Or maybe that's just how I view things.

Having money is obviously nice, but I realized I'm not doing this to buy stuff. Nor am I doing it for the freedom that money provides.

I just love the process.

It's more about self worth. That's what I've found with people in business.

I am not really motivated by money, either. I am definitely doing this for freedom, but it's for freeing myself to make the decisions and not follow someone else's agenda.

@amp0193 I agree with you about house size. When my kids (2) were entering high school, we almost bought a new house. We were aggressively seeking a 3500 square foot house with a pool so the kids could have room to hang out with their friends. Our current house is 1800 square feet. We didn't get a new house, and just a few months later, we had some financial setbacks and were very relieved that we didn't. Now, our kids are in college, and we are able to get them through that debt free. They appreciate that more than a pool. Also, I am in a position now to pursue financial freedom now that I wouldn't have been in if I had a debt albatross around my neck.

Don't get a Huawei. I used to swear by them. Have been using them for the past four years and am using a Huawei today.

Why not to get one:

GPS on the new one doesn't work in the US. It works perfectly when I'm in Asia. Doesn't work that well in America. My thinking is the the US government is messing up their functionality as much as possible. There's huge hatred between foreign governments and Huawei. It's not the same product that it used to be. Bluetooth connectivity is another large problem. However, if you don't need those features then you're good.

Here's another reason:
Without proof, is Huawei still a national security threat?

I wouldn't really trust a Huawei phone. Not doubting the technology, just a lack of trust with the ownership and the CFO being under arrest and facing extradition.

Exactly, Sir. Just need to keep going. Might sound a bit stupid, but I had an out loud rant to myself at 2am last night/this morning about not giving up on this project. Add to that I had a big f* this moment today... No chance I'm stopping now.

Now that's a backtested probability I would not bet against.

I hope every movie producer knows this.

Also - Simon Sinek says I'm managing my millennials wrong. He's probably right.

Intuitively I agree, and it is very frustrating, but the argument he makes is that it’s essentially impossible to change the way an entire generation was socialized, so, like it or not, you have to learn what makes them tick and how to motivate them, etc.

I don't necessarily subscribe to the idea that this is just about millennials. People just entering the workforce are squishier than veteran workers, and it's been commented on forever. The degree of helplessness can vary, it's true. Not to mention the number of people entering the workforce at once, due to birth rates and dropping unemployment rates. But don't forget, baby boomers were once the hippy generation that their parents complained about. Now they're the ones complaining.

Best method I've found to help non-hardened workers of all generations? Issue kerosene rags. They can tie them around their ankles so the ants don't crawl up and eat their candy _____.

If you don't have a big house, how are you going to fit all the things that you don't actually need?

Not to mention the average number of people per household in the U.S. has decreased 25% since the 60s.

Smaller families, bigger houses.

I read her book. It's really good. I let a lot of stuff I'd been hanging around for no reason go.

Now I actually have clothes I like.

Hey, @amp0193 , thanks for the rep!

Good things about a smaller house:
1. Less expensive to cool and heat.
2. Lower property taxes.
3. Easier to clean.
3. Extra people don't want to live with us, but if that becomes a problem, then I will learn percussion, or maybe take violin lessons.

I can't imagine cleaning a house with 3 more rooms full of my kids' sh*t. I guess you have to get a maid at that point. We can't keep it clean as it is.
When we were looking at houses, we also wanted a third bathroom. One of my friends said, "Why would you want to clean a third bathroom?"

Any TLDR; on how to get rid of stuff? I have a 4-car garage that isn't filled with 4-cars, but filled with other stuff.

@MJ DeMarco Something like:
  • Sort things by type and put all things of one type in one place (eg: clothes here, shop tools there).
  • Touch everything, 1 thing at a time.
  • Discard or donate anything that doesn't make you happy.
... was my takeaway.

Gather all of one category of item to sort in one place, for example pull all the books from all over the house into one place.
Then you hold each item and decide whether it is an item that you enjoy/love/makes happy. Or if it is an item that reminds you of not using it, negative energy kinda thing and or can give it a new home where someone else could use it.
The idea of has this item served it's purpose for you, what ever that might have been. Sometimes the purpose is just the act of buying something and having it in possession to quench that want/need.

Yeah, good tl;dr.

Go by categories. Literally everything of one type of object... go through all of them at once.

i.e. every book you own, of any kind in a big pile.

Go one at a time. Does owning this item bring you joy? If not, appreciate the value the item at for you at one time in your life, and then toss it.

If you come across books later that you forgot to add to pile, they're gone by default... because you didn't even remember you had them...

Do sentimental stuff last.

I was only able to get so far in our house as my wife wasn't 100% on board... but I cleaned up my stuff, and my closest makes me happy every time I open the door.

Got a premium account with MyHeritage. Traced my ancestors back till the 1400's and still +400 matches to check. Very interesting yet time consuming.

Sent in my DNA too to see if my ancestors were faithful :clench:
