I've been in marketing for a long time now... normally I feel like I've got a pretty good handle on what's going on in the marketplace, the challenges, and all of that -- but I've been seeing something I just can't quite explain and I'm wondering "what am I missing here?"

So here's the jest:

In my own email inbox, I notice a dozen or more email senders I've unsubscribed from... yet, they still show up in my inbox.

Then I started taking those dozen or so... and marked them spam AND unsubscribed (after I had already unsubscribed)... yet they are STILL showing up in my main inbox! ... so I've now tried spam, unsubscribe, AND BLOCK SENDER... now half the time they show up in my main inbox or my spam folder.

How the hell are they getting through when I'm struggling with some clients' deliverability rates at times?

So I've done a little experimentation this last week... I sent about 6.5 million emails... and I specifically sent to "unsubscribes" as well just to see what would happen... several responses came back saying "I've unsubscribed 5 times, why are you still sending me emails?"

What in the world is going on here? Is spam just not a thing anymore? Are unsubscribes not a thing anymore?

Am I the only one experiencing stuff like this?

** 6.5 million last week was across my own email lists and 3 different clients -- all different industries. Coaching, service, and ecomm.

ME! I made it a thing to clear my inbox, I trashed everything and started unsubscribing as they come. Express keeps emailing me no matter what, to name one. I don’t know how to stop it other than create a new email.

I ended up blocking them and that resolved it.

I wish my emails had deliverability like that LOL. If anyone has any clue what’s going on I’d love to hear it.

On a semi-unrelated note, I just noticed today that one of my biggest competitors has been sending their emails to an email I haven’t used in almost 10 years and they’re right there at the top of the inbox.

Is regular list cleaning not a thing either?

I'm sending cold email all the time, so have to stay on top of compliance.

In cases when I've messed up like this, it's usually some issue with a non-functioning unsubscribe link. You can reply "STOP" and usually systems will pick up the fact that you don't want any more messages (or are simply programmed to no longer send once they get a reply).

The more malicious explanation is it's deliberate "incompetence".

Either way, in the USA, they have to honor any and all unsub requests within 10 business days or you can file an FTC complaint or sue (yes, really). If you send a firm message that that's what you intend to do, then they'll act. The fees can go up to $10k per violation.

You could check the email headers in the raw messages to see what IP, sender address / domain, message id, DKIM, SPF, etc look like.

So basically you unsubscribe on one sender IP / address, and just get automatically added to the next one, where you start with a fresh slate, so to say.

As with most of this stuff, revenue from non-compliance is probably an order of magnitude (or multiple) greater than the fines.

I had to set up a new business e-mail to match my business domain instead of using a google inbox. Was using a warm up service which isn't anything new but had a good inbox hit rate for the warmups from the start.
What was more surprising is that I seemed to be getting a very respectable 9/10 delivery rate for my cold e-mails (box is only 6 weeks old and started e-mails at 10 days in) with a good open rate as well.

Perhaps the major providers are having issues with their filtering algos?

Shouldn't be too much effort to code a custom solution.

Of course this is all a simply academic thought exercise

Let's say you use ActiveCampaign. You need a server with your custom software. Set up Webhooks (https://developers.activecampaign.com/page/webhooks), so your server receives the "an unsubscription occurs" event if a contact unsubscribes from a list. Then you can simply resubscribe them (https://developers.activecampaign.com/reference/update-list-status-for-contact).

You could also do this across multiple accounts with different sender domain and dedicated ip (https://help.activecampaign.com/hc/...59-Dedicated-IP-addresses-with-ActiveCampaign) to move people around.

If you have your own completely custom and self-hosted solution for list management, automations, etc, you have a bunch more options. Could simply use one central list, ignore unsubscribe, and rotate through different API providers or even your own mail servers, with various combinations of sender/IP. Automatically monitor reputation for each, leave the ones with bad reputation alone for some time to recover, etc.

There are legitimate reasons to manage your sender reputation in some way though. Same as not relying on Amazon, Facebook and Google. For example, you might want to separate your transactional and marketing emails to different providers with different sender domain. Say info@brand-store.com and steve@brand.com.

Kung Fu Steve said:

B.)Are these companies so far ahead of the regular spammers (or just have a lot more resources) in tech / skills / team members that they outperform spammers?

I would guess the hardcore spammers have some software like I mentioned above.

Kung Fu Steve said:

C.)
