There have been multiple long-term studies (observing kids' behavior and following up into adulthood) in which the single most accurate predictors of success were:
- ability to focus
- ability to delay gratification
There was a time when my kids couldn't think of anything to do when they weren't allowed screen time. It became their default option and they didn't know how to deal with boredom. Since then we've sold the kids' tablets and replaced them with eReaders - one of our best decisions.
And it's not just social media. Pretty much anything with a screen and an app is enough. Educating the younger generations on the psychology behind social media addiction would be a step in the right direction.
