Sorry...hard to sift through 44 pages.

Oh no, I was saying that about myself. I clicked "post reply" instead of editing my post at one point, so I just edited the second post and said "Doublepost" so a mod knows that they can delete it.

I've read a lot of the books you guys mention, but I cannot for the life of me figure out why "Outliers" has so many good reviews.

No offense to the author, or anyone here that liked it, but I did not like it at all. I bought the audio version which was very long. I wanted to turn it off half-way through because it was so boring, but kept listening and telling myself to give it a chance, because maybe he would say something important in the middle, or near the end. Nope.

When I got to the end of the darn thing (took a few days), I felt like I had just wasted 10 hours of my life (and $30+ !). I was so disappointed that I almost wanted my money back.

All I got out of all that hoopla, was that you need 10,000 hours of training in something to become an expert, a prodigy.

He could have said that in one sentence.

Oh, and the other thing that baffled me - he spent an hour or so near the end teaching me about the mental gymnastics and mechanics of being an airplane pilot. ???

I wasn't in flight school. Maybe it helped someone else but it didn't help me at all. I gave it away.

Fantastic book!
Goes well along with "Winning Through Intimidation." Did you read that one, too?

I'm with you @Vigilante... Mind you that recently I have stupidly been following one specific author's line of books. I read "Abundance", which I thought was great, then followed it up with "Bold" which was decent but more geared to crowd funding and using competition to drive 10x gains in industry in the end than it was about much else. Then I stupidly started on "Exponential Organizations". I'm about 2 hours into the audio book and I'm ready to skip the rest. All rehashed crap from the first 2 books. I get that the target audience may not have necessarily read the other books, but my view is that if you don't have enough 'meat' to write a book in the first place, then don't write the %$@[HASHTAG]#ing[/HASHTAG] book!

I need some fresh suggestions on good books. I've read pretty much everything that seems to be worth reading in this thread. Anyone? Even if it's off-the-wall, so long as it's worth the read I'll give it a go.

I have done the same as you and find Exponential Organizations mostly a rehash. If you are sick of business books rehashing the same old concepts perhaps your would enjoy some biographies ( I really enjoy these, there is much to learn from good bio's), books on self-improvment (not the ' ra ra I have unlimited power' books but one's such as making "making a good brain great", persuasion techniques, buyer psychology, longevity etc.

I've often wondered if the truly successful people in the world (like those discussed here on the forum so frequently) spent much of their time reading motivational/success/self help/etc books.

I don't think they read any of that for motivation per say, but understanding yourself (and your environment) is something a successful person would want. A friend of mine who I consider successful (around 1m/year) has recommended me some of the books recommended in this thread.

Also, Warren Buffet has recommended at least one that I know of - How to win friends and influence people, and he's doing okay. So I'd say - sure, they are people like everyone else.

I've read a lot of different books since I was 18.

I suppose it was to understand myself. It didn't motivate me. I think I focused on relationship books and Christian books because that's where my focus was at the time. Trying to understand myself and family and relationships with men. Then when crap happen: I went into reading books to figure out how to manage emotions, becoming mentally tough, success strategies, visualization and mindfulness and meditation. At that point I started looking at Millionaire mindsets and ended up here, where now it's more about success financially and creating a business.

I don't believe any book ever motivated me. It gave me inspiration. Motivation came from sports video's and watching like the Junction boys and getting that concept no matter how hard your crushed keep moving. Movie's like "Whiplash" Remind me why I'm in the fast lane, best of life physical experience with people. If I get in a crappy mood, I just have to look at something like that and remember why I'm doing this. Freedom and staying control to create my reality and world, instead of allowing others to create it for me.

I think various parts of your life, you're focused on different things. And being from a sidewalk family, you never seen success books, business books, or millionaire books on the coffee table. You seen gossip magazines and home and house magazines. I didn't have the role models that read books, and fortunately, I watched other people and kept comparing my life to other families, and pondering what they were doing different.

Seems lately I have been focusing on the retail side of business more than normal. I think there is a tremendous science to merchandising both online and offline.

Very good so far. I'm actually learning a lot.

That's really unfortunate. How to Get Rich was a fantastic read and I would have loved to have seen some new content instead of a rehash.
