I hate to take a shot at a one person business - but this is so pathetic that it is embarrassing. This is one of my competitors. Needless to say, he is not considered for long when I talk to clients. I use this site to compare to mine. Reverse marketing.

I mean - if you can't rise to the level of a ten-year-old - it is better to do nothing at all.

Otherwise - JUICY thread. I will be watching this one very closely!

And here is one that takes a painful subject (dentists) and makes it even more painful.

And this was outsourced to a web development company!

THIS GUY.

Actually, despite the fact that this site is essentially a time machine back to 1999, the content is super addicting. A few years ago I read through a ton of his pages. He's like the coolest grandpa ever LOL.

For instance, check out his experimentation to find out how to make the best tasting cake from a box mix.

It was his tutorial on how to grow ranunculuses that first led me to the page.

I like the way this guy thinks.

Even if his web design skills aren't exactly cutting edge.

Wow, a lot of the websites look like the stuff I was targeting back in 1999. They're still here! Screaming for someone to redo them!

Visit any website that is a time machine back to 1999?

This one.

Monkey Hangup - Clothes Hangers That Kids Love

Found it on Upwork. They are looking for marketing help and can't figure out why their site visitors aren't converting.

I did a proposal and really had to make sure I wasn't sounding mean. They have a site visitor counter at the bottom . . .

To be frankly honest, I think this website almost fall on this category too @MJ DeMarco

Think about it.

Imagine James Bond movies on the casino scenes. People walk by with $5000 suits like it's actually t-shirts, martinis everywhere and one person opens this forum on his limited edition iPhone X.

It just doesn't add-up.

Except...

You're imagining early 2000s James Bond movies.

But then, I read in your TMF book that you tried to change it and people hate it. I thought okay maybe not.

But still, I think this forum deserves a fix.

My friend and I share a passion for writing, and well, he does it more on the fanfiction side, which is a bigger thing these days especially with Wattpad. He still uses this site, and I think lots of people do.

This isn't the worst example and the developers still update it but the layout design is so basic---despite its updates, it looks the same as it did years ago. Maybe I'm just judging too harshly; it's not as bad as the others. However, with Wattpad in the same industry, this completely lacks in comparison, and it doesn't really offer much in value, let alone in the design.

Perhaps its value comes from being a smaller and thus more private site for fanfiction writers and readers.

Yeah, I have the same filing. This forum really looks quite old and outdated, but probably it's harder to modify then normal website with client info etc.

Hi Mike, you’re not wrong! And I think MJ knows this. What I like about MJ is that he will take this as feedback and not personally, and will continue to improve the site. We never stop improving! :)

I remember others that criticized this site. The bodies were never found.

(Hey - somebody had to take a stand! I like this site!)

Yeah, because no body died.

Also I agree, I like this site so much. The people here, are just, wonderful. But for this forum's sake, it has to improve. Not growing = dying. I wish this forum stay around until my peers enjoy their retirement money from stock market. Or better, until Mike Ferrari Jr. retire.

@theMikeFerrari and @Ocean Man do you have any examples of good looking forums?

Most of us have seen good looking and modern corporate and business websites. Is there a 2019 aesthetic to forums that @MJ DeMarco isn't aware of? Or do you just not like the color scheme?

Regarding this forum...

It has been known for years that forum software has lagged current tastes and trends, especially via smartphone use. This forum started on vBulletin (for about 3 years) and when that software really fell behind, we moved to Xenforo. We've been on that platform for nearly 10 years. When we originally switched, Xenforo was considered modern. In the ten years since, they've really done nothing to move their software into the modern era. New forum software options aren't much better. We've looked at IPB, Discourse, and a number of other alternatives, all of which fall short of what I'd like to see.

So from my perspective, I'm stuck polishing a turd. If I was starting a forum fresh in today's age, I wouldn't start one because nothing out there does what I think it should do. And I have no interest getting into the forum software business.

Is there a 2019 aesthetic to forums that @MJ DeMarco isn't aware of?

If there is one, I can guarantee it isn't powered by Xenforo.

Which BTW, here's how that software looks "out of the box."

Fastlane gets an average of 300 posts per day. If I was stuck using that native format, I'd be lucky to see 30.

Not a fan of that UI at all.

And even if I was, it isn't powered by Xenforo.

Anyhow, this thread isn't gonna turn into a forum suggestion box.

^ Sounds good.

So getting back on track... also calling @Fox

How does anyone feel about:

When you find sites like these, what if you could sell the owners on switching over to something like weebly, wix or shopify? For those who don't know coding.

EXAMPLE:

If you can add value to these very old sites and upgrade them to say a weebly or shopify site for a fair price and have someone like; @SEO Guy @SEO New York @seodo @SEOMarketer to do some SEO or other work behind and around it like @eliquid or (i.e. Adwords) @Andy Black , wouldn't that work or at least help these sites?

I want to redesign the website for this company, but I can't stand coding and programing. Maybe I'll take a shot at it again ;).

If it's true that no forum software fits modern design standards, this looks like a potential Fastlane idea.

Fully understandable. I'll drop my concern up to this point. Thank you for taking your precious time explaining all this @MJ DeMarco. I really appreciate it. Let's just move on to how this thread really talking about.

Could I message you about this quickly? Kudos on making Xenforo look presentable, I might be able to help out a bit – don't want to clog up this thread with unrelated stuff.
