I came across this video and thought it might change perspective for anyone who can't stop reading self-help books, watching motivational videos and scrolling for the next inspiring article.

I've been there, sometimes i still find myself there.

You know the words you mutter to yourself:

" If I just read this ONE more book then i'll be ready to start my business"

" The latest video from Gary Vee is out, let me watch that to see if something clicks"

"Business INSIDERS just released a really good article, I'll get right to my work but i must read this first"

It's been repeated over and over, but the road to success is ACTION. Period.

I would bet 8 out of every 10 people on this forum find their way here through this very dynamic.

20 years ago you walked into a Borders or Barnes & Noble and there was a Business section and a Self Help section.

Now they have essentially merged and are bigger than ever.

I'm still waiting for the religion section to merge with them.

This is an addiction/obssesion/compulsion that's easy to overlook or justify.

Because it looks and feels more productive than obvious time and attention wasters like video games and TV.

Most business/self help stuff should realistically be classified as entertainment.

So there is no kidding yourself.

Most of it is just a promotional piece for people looking to become "consultants" and "experts".

They pretty much give their OPINIONS (disguised as facts with selected confirmation bias studies) for 400 pages that could have been summed up in 2.

Most of these books if you read the inside jacket or even just the title, you've pretty much read the whole book.

Obviously this is all so they can get a publishing deal.

Which of course a published book gives the illusion of credibility.

Which then helps in getting speaking and consulting gigs as an "expert"

And around the circle goes.

But ONE question cuts through all the bullshit.

What are YOUR RESULTS from having consumed all of this information?

How much MONEY[emoji389][emoji383] has it made you?

I think it’s a really interesting question.
The right answer could be « self help is bull shit if you don’t act »
As myself I read a lot of books by self-help gurus.
Dating,dépression,happiness...
They all have a lot of value when you act.
Dating: I know understand hop to be vulnerable with the womens and particulary my girlfriend, thanks to the book « Models » of Mark Manson.
It really have a good impact on my behaviors, and my Life has really changed with this book.
Another book that everyone should read is « The hacking of american mind » by Robert Lustig.
Gosh...
This book is amazing and I can’t relate how much it helped me to understand our mechanism, it’s just full of value, even if I don’t Know if you could call it « self-help »
So yeah no doubt self-help is an addiction that’s worth billions.
But I can guarantee if you take action, you will see real improves in your life.
Maybe we should read these type of books once a month, and rest of the time read fiction.
But I totally agree it can become mental masturbation

Yeah i totally agree. I wouldn’t want to be completely cynical about the whole industry as there are some diamonds in the rough.

MJs advice of just reading a book that solves a specific problem is great advice.

Yes Information is definitely on a Power Law.

5% of the INFORMATION you CONSUME will help you take CORRECT ACTIONS and produce 95% of your RESULTS.

95% of the INFORMATION you CONSUME will lead you to taking NO ACTIONS or the WRONG ACTIONS and waste your TIME and ATTENTION as well.

I've read THOUSANDS of BOOKS on ALL kinds of topics in my life.

A good chunk have been in the Business and Self Improvement genre.

I can say without question the things I've read the LEAST about I've gotten the MOST RESULTS with and vice versa.

A simple example would be when you were a kid and want to ride a bike.

We learned by Doing.

By RIDING

Trial-and-Error.

Falling over.

Getting back up and doing it again.

I never even THOUGHT of reading a book (let alone read one) on how to ride a bike.

Can you imagine reading a book "The Mindset And Physics Of Riding A Bicycle" when you were a kid and thinking that's how you'll learn to ride a bike?

Somehow when we become ADULTS we started thinking the ANSWERS can be found in books and videos.

All based on OTHER people's THOUGHTS and OPINIONS.

Especially when it comes to topics like Entrepreneurship and Self Improvement.

With all that being said:

I DO think just like MJ points out in UNSCRIPTED , that much of the information on becoming a MASTER instead of a SLAVE is hidden and counterintuitive.

And if you DON'T understand basic business concepts like SUPPLY and DEMAND you're going to have a HARD time accumulating MONEY.

But MOST of all it's learning to THINK for YOURSELF and QUESTION EVERYTHING.

And above all else DOING on a continual basis and LEARNING from your mistakes.

I think READING has made me way more KNOWLEDGEABLE and INTERESTING.

But those things DON'T necessarily put MONEY in your bank account.

Let me SAVE some people on this forum some TIME and TROUBLE with just ENOUGH of and the RIGHT kind of information...

If someone asked me what they should READ to learn about ENTREPRENEURSHIP and the MINDSET to go with it, I would tell them to JUST read 3 books.

That's it.

1. Unscripted (and/or The Millionaire Fastlane)- MJ DeMarco

2. The 50th Law- Robert Greene

3. Cashvertising- Drew Eric Whitman

There are others I could say that are good as well.

But at some point not only does the EXCESS information CONSUME your TIME and ATTENTION but it leads to LACK of ACTION as well.

I think READING those 3 books 10 TIMES a piece would be MORE BENEFICIAL then reading 300 books just ONCE.

The books are just the STARTING point.

The REAL BEGINNING is the DAILY trial-and-error ACTION.

But what do I KNOW?

I'm still on this LONG road myself.

We'll see if I ever GET to where I want to go.

The RESULTS will SPEAK for themselves...

Yup. I've been struggling with productivity and focus -- so I'm reading Deep Work by Cal Newport.

Problem ---> Book.
