Understood that some feel this way.

But I always assumed more activity means that the forum is more successful.

Low value post is better than having no post.

To incentivize more high quality posts, any KPI is better than having no KPI.
Getting people to participate is a good thing.

The vast majority of members are just getting started in business.

If the home page feed is flooded with people asking beginner questions, especially those already answered, then the forum could become less attractive to those a bit further ahead.

It might serve the forum to not have posts from more experienced entrepreneurs lost in the noise.

Maybe these changes will help increase the signal to noise ratio?

This is what happens when you get a bunch of maximizers in a thread and solicit feedback that even ever so slightly affects them...

In internet marketing, you come up with a theory, you test it, and see the results.

We had a theory. We implemented. Maybe we wait and see how this goes...

Reminder, there's a poll attached here, please vote.

How about something like this? "knowledge bomb"

I like it but it is too intricate. The icon needs to render nicely in a 32 x 32 size. That would appear as a blobish color mishmash.

Alright, I'll see what I can create and post some versions in the 32 x 32 format.

In the meantime, here are the @Johnny boy and @Andy Black reactions, which could be used for abusive or helpful posts, respectively.

@MJ DeMarco I finished.

I tried working with 32 x 32 but all the quality is lost. I've used 128 x 128, and I think that the browser will do the job of reducing the scale without destroying all quality.

And you were right about the image's intricacy. It has to be a very abstract icon, otherwise it becomes unintelligible at a smaller scale.

Let me know what you think:

There should be an emoji for "interesting". Many times I find ideas interesting, but I disagree with them. We should be able to distinguish from things that we AGREE WITH vs things that are VALUABLE, but we may not agree with.

At the moment I feel reactions are basically "I agree with this" vs "I disagree with this". Which is OK, and I know most people will go on using them that way. But I feel a lot of the conflicts in this community are caused by the inability of people involved to distinguish that a disagreement doesn't mean the other person isn't providing value.

What image editor are you using? There are different types of algorithms for scaling down or up images. When you scale up is when it gets tricky because any algorithm you use tries to use the surrounding pixels to infer what the next scaleup pixel should be. Try GIMP as its free and has some decent image manipulating capabilities.

They already have this emoji in their panel, but it's called the "BAN USER" button and doesn't have an icon unfortunately.

Two suggestions:

#1 )If a member has over 5k, 10k, 20k, 30k posts etc they should get a different multiple.

So like 5k = 1.2x normal like ratio, 10k = 1.3x and so on.

How about our likes are amplified by our power score? So if you have 300%, your like or dislike is 3x.

That’s how I originally read your post to mean.

I think there’s a few people here who used to post on the misc forum and they will know exactly how doing that will end.

Good idea but the end result is horrible.

Speaking of, I did like the red/green system they had. Maybe instead of scores we just need colours so the exact number doesn’t matter, you can just quickly see if someone is green red or orange.

The metrics and reaction points have changed again.

After much consideration, I've determined that having a negative reaction (-1, the UGH) is a detriment to the forum creating discord, strife, and contentiousness. The negative UGH has been replaced with the POO icon, which is just neutral. Anyone can use this to show disagreement and it is more of a "fun loving" reaction.

A laugh, HaHa, reverts back +1.

If you think any THREAD or POST is worth GOLD, hit that GOLD button.

I LOVE the new reaction pack!! But wait - I agree with @Antifragile - the heart-eye reaction should be +2 so that it's more impactful than a "like," and then gold being +3 is awesome!!

(Speaking of the heart-eye reaction... could we get that one included in our in-post options? There isn't one currently.)

Quick question MJ — what about changing the formula for User Power to something like:

Likes / sqrt(Posts)

Here’s the idea… we want a rating that takes into account both the QUALITY of contributions (that’s the ratio of likes to posts), AND the QUANTITY, in a single number.

If we have two users as follows:
U1: 100 likes, 2 posts

U2: 10000, 200 posts

Then the current formula says their User Power is equal, ie 50.

But intuitively we know this isn’t quite right, since the quantity of contributions isn’t taken into account.

The new formula takes it into account — it gives 70 U1 and 707 U2, which imo is much more accurate and reflective of both the QUALITY of their contribution AND the QUANTITY.

The way I came up with the formula is by reintroducing the quantity of likes by multiplying L/P * L. Then took the root of it to normalize it, leading to:

L/sqrt(P)

So here’s a few examples:

Kak — 8,992P 41,094L — 4.57 Current
MJ — 35,918P 150,591L — 4.19 Current
Andy — 16,252P 59,588L — 3.67 Current
Myself — 1,497P 4,063L — 2.71 current
Fox — 3,550P 23,945L — 6.74 current
BizyDad — 1,986P 6,689L — 3.37 current

If we order those from high to low, we get Fox, Kak, MJ, Andy, Bizy, Myself.

Here’s with the new formula:
Kak — 433
MJ — 795
Andy — 467
Myself — 105
Fox — 401
Bizy — 150

So the order becomes: MJ (the KING haha!), Andy, Kak, Fox, Bizy, Myself.

I feel this last order is a MUCH better reflection of contributions.

What do you think?
