I'm wondering if I should be spending money on one of his software tools for FB ads, called ConnectExplore.

Basically, it lets you target interests on FB ads that your competitors have overlooked or are not aware of, thereby driving your FB ads costs down. One of his USP claim is that his company has access to the FB Ads API which his rivals don't.

Is this guy legit or just another FB guru? I'm looking into learning how to run FB ads and all the retargeting stuff. Are there any FB ad experts here? (as I understand, people like Andy Black are more of SEO guys?)

I think it's misleading I can't see how there are 'hidden interests' that no one else is targeting. Take his fishing analogy, you might want to target trout fishing and he shows a boat out on its own with no one else fishing. However many others will be trawling 'fishing' as a general interest so picking them up anyway, just not as efficiently (as they are a subset). Also he can't have exclusive access to a Facebook API (does he actually say that?)

You could do all this analysis breakdown he shows (below) in a spreadsheet very easily (and what's with an average CPC of €8.05? That like $9 a click). So it looks like that last column is being totalled rather than averaged. Not inspiring.

Having said all that the program is only 200 bucks and has a 30 day refund policy so you have nothing to lose trying it out. I'd be interested in how you get on with it.

Andy is actually Google Ad's not SEO.

The app's a joke targeting noobs. It's a money-maker.

I've made millions from FB ads and I've never used an interest targeting tool before.

If you want to sell to your customers - hang out where they hang out and find the interests. It's not hard.

On his sales copy page, it was written that FB somehow gave him access to the FB Ads API.

I think I'll hold it off for now. Seems the guy is kinda shady to begin with.

Did you watch any video or online courses on how to run FB ads and all those funnel setups when you start?

I figured it out myself after years of practise, tears and failure.

Wilco started poppin up on my fb feed like two days after I joined my first SEO group. I think he’s just the best bro guru for fb ads out there.

If you decide to check it out, please update. He seems suspiciously happy to me... waaaay too happy.

I wouldn't say he is shady, just hustling like everyone else. Also he seems to be a one man band operating from his apartment looking at the video's. Again nothing wrong with that but it makes me wonder about the business.

There are several places you can invest your money in that will give you much greater insight into Facebook advertising if you are trying to gain insight and traction. Hit me up with a PM if you want some recommendations.

Yup, his sales page is beautifully done. In fact, it's an absolutely brilliant case study for aspiring copywriters. Tons of testimonials too.

No, just curious to get your opinions if you know this guy or have used his products before since you're in the PPC niche. :)

Ah, got it.

Yeah, never heard of him or used his products.

Most of these people find something that has already been done before, or something most new people wouldn't know about and try to exploit it.

I can tell you this.

The gains are never in some "tool" or IT part of the business.

The gains are always in the strategy. And most of those gains are in the foundations.

Why do you think certain basketball players who are world class performers practice 100's+ free throws a day? Then move on to 100's+ of 3 pointers a day?

Even at your peak, you gotta keep doing the foundations and improving them.

None of these players get better because of their new shoes, the sweat bands, or the gatorade ( the tool in this Guru's offering ).

I did use an ads tool to start with. I'd recommend fbnichefinder.com (no affiliate links and it's not my product).

I focused on how the app's algorithm finds interests then I started doing the same. Now, I don't need apps.

Here's an real-life example. Let's say I want to sell dog collars. Who would I target? The obvious answer is 'dog owners' but let's dig a little deeper. Where do dog owners hang out?

If you own a dog, you need to buy dog food so 'Petsmart' is a great interest - find more interests like 'Petsmart'. How about pet insurance for your dog? Look for dog insurance interests.

What about targeting SUPER dog lovers? Have you looked at dog magazines, events or forums?

I was thinking though, let's say I'm selling dog collars like you said.
Now, in the FB ads Interest section, couldn't I just enter "dogs" as the interest? Wouldn't that be enough?

Because if you set "dogs" as the Interest, the ad will be shown to all people who like dogs, thus the reach will be wider and more. With that, then, entering other terms like "petsmart" or "pet insurance" seems un-necessary, because all those who are also interested in dog food/dog clothes/dog shoes/dog insurance/dog burials will see the ad.

Or maybe I'm missing something here.

Same for cats. If I sell cat fur trimmers, then I can just target one word: "cats", and all cat lovers will get hit by the ad :D

I do use broad interests like 'Dogs' and it converts like fire but I don't like it as an interest because it's not super targeted.

Let's say you're not a dog lover but you see a funny dog meme on your newsfeed and like, comment or share the meme - FB will add you to the 'Dogs' interest bucket. If I use 'Dogs' - I'm targeting you but you're not my core demographic.

This is my only issue with broad interests. They work phenomenally well with established brands and services but not for a new business (at least with my experience).

The other reason I like to avoid broad interests for more nuanced interests is because they're a lot more targeted and generally produce better results.

For example, if I'm a dog owner and there's a brand of dog supplement called Wonder Dog - I wouldn't know this brand and/or the product exists unless I buy that product. And, why would I like that FB interest as a user if I didn't own a dog?

I believe this is the NUMBER #1 reason why most people fail with FB/Insta ads - they don't do enough research when it comes to products and their core demographics.

I always say "hang out where you customer hangs out" and its never let me down.

It's a pretty good tool, I've used it before. I stopped using it because I wasn't really using it.
Do you need it? No.
Can you use it? Yes.

It's only about $250 and it has a guarantee, try out for yourself.

One of the best tools from Wilko is the ability to maximize your FB Pixel.
For example you can create a custom audience for people who scrolled past the half point on your site etc.
You can't do that with the regular FB pixel.

I used the tool before, but it was useless finding additional interests specifically in Germany. So I got the refund.

The best tool is your brain in combination with Facebook Audience Insights. If you have a pretty good idea who your audience is then you will be able to find the relevant interests to target. Starting with a broad interest and digging deeper and deeper helps you to find those hidden interests manually. Chrome extensions like "Facebook Interest Miner" can be useful to extract interest suggestions from the detailed targeting option inside Ads Manager.

Needless to say that you need to test and optimize a lot to find/build a winner.

I have had some success with very broad interests and carousel ads using the magic of the Facebook algorithm to optimize based on pixel events (conversions) and find more buyers.

I don't think that Wilco is "just another guru". His content is on point and he understands working with relationship funnels IMHO. I just think that his other tools like UpViral (a Viral Referral System) are more useful then ConnectExplore, but then again I haven't used it for interest research in the US.

I don't see where/how you can select specific interests. Maybe someone can clue me in to what I'm missing.

In the FB ad manager I can only select from pre-determined interests, like I can target people who like "Magnus Carlsen", but I cannot target "Hikaru Nakamura". So WTF is Mr. Wilco selling? I'm a programmer, so I looked right away at the FB ads API, and it seems to be the same, it looks like you need to select an interest from FB's list, you can't just make up whatever keyword you want."

So what is this guy actually selling? Or am I missing something? Or is getting to that interest targeting through some other strategy?

Sorry to resurrect a year-old thread, but I'm happy to find this forum already has a discussion directly related to something I'm trying to figure out.

There's nothing 'blackbox' about FB targeting.

*Maybe* there are some hidden interests that you can uncover using the API but mostly its hype. Put yourself in your customers shoes - where would you hang out if you loved dogs or bikes or tattoos?

One of these days I'll create a video and show you how to target ANYONE off FB and Insta ads.
