Wait till you find out that every single business feels like it in the beginning. Especially if you're trying to start 3 different businesses at the same time while working full time and going to the gym. Wtf are you even doing.
No you didn't do what Johnny told you. You talked to 8 people and made an excuse to go back home. You did the same amount of work in 4 months that Johnny does in a hour.
What you’re going through is normal.
That’s why I’m worried about you. Because every business is crap at the start.
If you don’t have confidence now you probably won’t have it when you jump ship to another business.
Let me elaborate a little.
I did do what Johnny told me to, things I'm now paying for:
- "Hurry up and get a 'good-enough' truck, you're taking too long"
- Spent $8,000 to avoid junkers/financing and now will probably spend another $1,000 on fixes for something I've driven less than 200 miles
- "Just get any riding mower, dude"
- Johnny has exactly 1 riding mower, and it is a backup - he didn't even do things the way he's telling me to do things
Now I'm in a bind because I do not have enough time to do the necessary volume door-knocking, and I do not have the money necessary to run ads. But the MAIN problem is that I'm running out of time. Costs are accumulating, but revenue is not.
I just got off the phone with my family friend who runs his own lawn care company, here are some key takeaways that give me an even dimmer outlook:
- He has been doing this for 4 years and has no intention of stopping
- He does the work himself, and has no desire to hire anybody - any shadowing or learning from him would be voluntary if I were to do that
- He has 30 lawns that he services weekly, says they usually take about 4 days to get done, and mentioned that he makes between $4,000 - $5,000 per month from this, charging them monthly for service
- By comparison, If I had the same number of customers, they would all have to be at least the middle-tier maintenance package to make roughly the same money. HOWEVER, he is servicing them weekly, as opposed to my service which would be biweekly - so for the same price they're getting double the service
- He is significantly better equipped than myself; 1 of his zero-turns costs more than my truck, riding mower, and push mower combined - and he has 2 of them, before considering mulch, power equipment, etc
