Bio, thanks for starting the research.

Any hotels that the Phx people can recommend to start looking for rooms that can be rented? I can call the hotels you recommend to find out rates... so far only 20 people have showed intentions to be there (based on the poll) so we shouldn't need a big room.

Last meeting included some speakers (Thanks Russ for getting one that time), plus a short 'presentation' by each of the participants. The networking happens naturally (after meeting dinner and get-together). I talked about credit scores, SteveO talked about apt bldgs, bflbob about business entities, somebody else talked about financing rehabs, other about buying under performing (or is non-performing) notes, etc, etc. The group of 'internet guys' gave us very good presentations as well.

From this group I can easily foresee presentations about creating your plan, or tax-related topics, internet marketing/companies, start-ups, etc. Probably RE wouldn't be as dominant as the last meeting.

Well, I started the research online, I sent emails to these venues asking them for quotes for a place to hold the meeting. I requested the quotes for March 8th, 9th, from 9 am to 6 pm. I will let you guys know if/when any of them reply to my query.

Anderson's Fifth Estate Club
6820 E 5th Ave
Scottsdale, AZ 85251

Scottsdale Civic Center Plaza
7380 E. 2nd Street
Scottsdale, AZ 85251

Scottsdale Resort & Conference Center
7700 E McCormick Parkway
Scottsdale, AZ 85258

Venue of Scottsdale
7117 E 3rd Avenue
Scottsdale, AZ 85251

If any of the locals know of a better place or thinks we should ignore some of these please let me know. As I am not that familiar with the area I am just guessing and contacting whoever I can get from the web just to get things started.

I couldn't email directly this one, that I liked it because of the location:
Alliance Business Center
7150 E Camelback Rd
Scottsdale, AZ

I haven't done any research about hotels yet... any suggestions?

Here are some other questions to ponder:

What worked at the RDPD event and what didn't?

How long did the speaking go on for?

Do we really need a large room, or could we get by with a large room at a restaurant?...Are we estimating around 20 to show?

...Is the get together for one day or 2?

Can't wait!

I requested info for 25 people all day long, and asked for info about projectors/white board
It is for two days.
What worked?
Lots of networking, learning from each other, sharing ideas
What didn't work? ask Russ ;)

Dinners were great both nights.

There was that restaurant next to the hotel that we stayed in last year and I remember that they had a nice banquet room that would be perfect for 20 people. I'm sure if we needed it only between the peak times (meaning between breakfast and lunch and again between lunch and dinner) we could get it for a good price, or even for free if we stayed at that hotel again.

I personally liked both the hotel and the restaurant and would enjoy staying there again.

I checked the hotels + airfare for this week (on a whim thought about going to PHX for few days) - you can get a hotel rated 8.8/10 4days +airfare from MN for $550. Now I know some of you fancy folks might not like 3 star hotels, but it seems like a pretty good deal for a college kid. I am guessing the prices will go down as the heat goes up?

Nah Jon, it wasn't the hotel, it was the roommate :D

I like that idea. What was the name of that hotel again? We could call them to find out...

Bio, that looks very interesting... I like it a lot.
Based on that one, we are talking $1,600 for both days if we take it all day Saturday and Sunday. We could also reserve it for all Saturday and only half day Sunday but it will depend on how many people are coming and what activities we are planing.

Based on that I am estimating $70 - $100 per person to have a location.

Sorry-- I'm running a race w/time to get ALL of our permits and applications in before the end of the year, when rates (and CODES) change.

I'm literally working around the clock to get this done.

Last year (and w/other events I've organized), we get a facility, then figure out how much it will run w/say, 50% turnout.

So if we think we're going to have 20 people, we do the numbers based on 10.

Example:

Estimated costs for:

$30 pp -Snacks, drinks (2.5 days), lunch (2 days)
$8 pp pens, paper, etc.
______
$38 pp for the above

$1200 2.5 day rental of 40 person room
$ 350 A/V rental, or other items (this is purely a guess, just for the example)
_____
$1550

$1550 divided by 10 people = $155 pp

$155
$ 38 (see above)
_____
$193 pp

We'd probably round up to $199 in this example, to cover unanticipated expenses.

If more people come, and you have left over $$, you either cut checks to all of the attendees, or vote on which charity to donate it to (or, you use the funds for next year's event, if the group votes to do that instead).

Lots of other details I've left out (how many days you have before you can release the hotel rooms, or the conference rooms, etc.)

Sorry for the delays on my end. I thought I'd be done w/the building, fire, planning & B&B permits etc by now, but one of the key people was sick all last week, and I only have business 3 days now to work w/him-- assuming he's IN! Argh!

Rest assured I will be able to work on this Jan 2.

-Russ H.

PS We can ask for a head count in the meantime, assuming $100-200 fee for the get-together, say, $160/nt for the hotel rooms, with the specific date that was voted in.

The 4th of March is my 30th Anniversary, although my wife says it seems more like 40.
I'm trying to talk my wife into coming out early with me so we can do a little touring.

One or two days for the Grand Canyon.
Another couple of days viewing Steve-O's new furniture.
Maybe a day gawking at MJ's Lambo.

Actually, if anyone from out there has some good ideas for things to do, I'd love to hear them.

March 7th is our anniversary! :)

I'd allow at least 2-3 days to tour all of SteveO's furniture. :smxF:

Route 66 is a blast, if you like that kinda thing.

Sedona is gorgeous, but it's a bit chilly this time of year, I think (not sure, though).

aptohosting, you don't have to drive there... you know, airplanes usually can cover that distance waaay faster ;)

I don't think it's a good idea to go touring SteveO's furniture... I heard you get a big chance of being beaten by a 16 yrs old punk or a 4 yr old kid!!!

So, just to get things going, I am appointing my self as the list-keeper.
If you are planning to come to the "Fastlane beer & pancakes" get-together, March 8th, 9th, in Scottsdale or Phoenix, AZ (same thing, for those that don't know... one next to the other).

IF YOU ARE COMING, DROP ME A PM TO ADD YOU TO THE LIST.

I will be emailing each of you as soon as we get a tentative location and the expected amount to be paid.

Definitely do Sedona. It will be t-shirt and shorts weather for you NY cold weather people.

The Grand Canyon will be too cold though. There's enough stuff to do in Phoenix without going back to the cold weather.

I've heard Kartchner Caverns were pretty cool. Its about 3 hours SE past Tucson.

Then there's the pride of Scottsdale, The SteveO Furniture Tour! Sign up early cause its sold out until February.

While you're here try the best pizza in the US according to many critics.

Bob, I highly recommend you visit two uniqure places in Phoenix: the Desert Botanical Garden and The Heard Museum (the main one off Central Ave).

If you plan to escape the Phoenix metro (which you should), you should definitely check out the Grand Canyon. Since you're from NY, I'm sure you'll be able to put up with the weather.

If you plan on driving up to the GC, I suggest you make a pit stop at Montezuma's Castle. Oh, and if you're willing to spend a few days in AZ, you should definitely check out Sedona, especially Oak Creek Canyon.

Other things to mention, since everyone's taste varies:

NE part of the state: Meteor Crater, Petrified Forest, can also purchase authentic Native American crafts (mainly Navajo and Hopi).

SE part of the state: Tombstone, caves mentioned above, Saguaro Nat'l Park or a quick trip into Mexico.

If you need further advice, feel free to ask.

I took another spot so there are only 15 left.

I love the Desert Botanical Gardens but they are fairly isolated. I like the idea of staying central to the city as it is easier to get around.
