try to meditate. can focus for a few minutes. crazy shit rolls from there or i fall asleep.

Crazy shit is a part of this experience. You aren't doing anything wrong. It's not sitting with an empty mind for an hour. It's sitting and trying to notice that your mind is separate from you. Sometimes you'll get lost for a few minutes in your thoughts and then go back. Sometimes you'll notice it within seconds and go back. That's the entire practice.

OK let's get you on fire here love bug!

@MTF, @SteveO, @S.Y. and all of you cool cats in this thread... what do you guys think of having @ZCP try a guided meditation in addition to separate times on his own?

Love bug, if you are listening to someone's voice instructing you on what to be thinking, seeing, feeling it may be a break from your own brain pattern.

I'm with MTF, you aren't doing anything wrong!

@SteveO has been 'butt building' for two months now. said he's giving us a run for our money.

Sheesh! I better start the 2 a day workouts....today. Thanks for the added push @SteveO !!

Perhaps try this (it's for free):

I myself get distracted by guided meditation but maybe this will help get started. It's super short (there's a short talk and then meditation for like 5-10 minutes).

But in the end I think it's a crutch and a way to still be in your mind (listening to the guidance) instead of experiencing your mind (and listening to it as being external to it).

I say yes. Go for it.

Though, I have never done it. I have used guided imagery, but not done guided meditations. I started with Insight Timer and chimes. I had a bell rings every 5 minutes when I started. Then 10, then I dropped it completely for one bell at the end of my session.

But for sure, if it helps to start with a guided one. Go for it.

Day 26 completed.

Dealt with some mental anguish and then struggled with physical discomfort (stomach). Otherwise relatively calm.

If you are having trouble getting started, try this technique I posted about in this thread. That's how I got started as well and helps get the mind to deal with the concept better. You can sprinkle it throughout the day as well or whenever you want.

TLDR: watch this link. It only takes a minute to do and you'll get a lot of the benefits of a longer meditation :)

@MTF - I just remembered there's this meditation technique which might help with your winter woes (since you mentioned its related to your body and not the mind). It's called 'yoga nidra' (i.e yoga sleep) - basically its a guided meditation which puts your body in deep rest while the mind is still awake, 30 minutes of this is supposed to be equivalent to 2 hours of deep sleep. I do this on days when I don't get enough sleep or after some intense sports etc to get the body to recover.

Here's an interview with a stanford neuroscientist (Andrew Hueberman) about the benefits (see: 01:19:11 but the whole interview was pretty interesting) -

View: https://youtu.be/A1KSvTboNgA?t=4751

Here's one of the scripts on youtube I've used before, there are loads of other ones:

View: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7H0FKzeuVVs

Try it out and see if it makes a difference, others might find some benefits of this as well. You can even do it in the morning if you wake up groggy as he mentioned in the video (just make sure not to fall back asleep after haha) or in the afternoon instead of a nap or right before bed. I felt the experience to be similar to being in a float tank. It gets better the more you do it.

Day 26

Lots of re-centering and grounding myself whenever I go into thought. Towards the end, my thoughts were about life leading us regardless of our control. I ultimately dismissed the thought as pointless because it doesn't matter what we think, we're here right now with what life gives us is what matters.

Be careful with positive affirmations. Michael A. Singer explains it better in his course but to make long story short:
spirituality is not the law of attraction (get what I want and resist what I don't want). It's the complete opposite. It's letting go of preferences. This would include NOT using positive affirmations because that's like identifying yourself (your consciousness) with your likes and dislikes.
Thank you for the post. As much as I like to think otherwise, I still sometimes struggle to let go of preferences.
Sometime this month I will buy the course to get a better understanding of what Michael A. Singer teaches, and no doubt it will help my internal self.

The good news is I'm mostly over that event in my life (Day 24) that happened to me. I knew I was hurting inside at that time, so I had to come into terms with my self to deal with that. It's best to deal with the pain and grief, get over it, and move on as if it were a passing tree to enjoy the better joys of life.

Even though I'm still struggling to do this, I still practice this every day I can by using meditative techniques and self-awareness throughout the day whenever I feel anxious.

Can you clarify what happened here? I feel that we guide our lives completely. The problem is that we don't recognize this. Our attempts at conscious control don't work though.

Meditation is one of the tools that help us to bridge that separation that we have. It allows us to connect and communicate with ourselves. Thus allowing us to direct our lives and the reality that we live in.

Great job. Sounds to me like you are beginning this communication.

@SteveO

Truth be told, I was in deep thought philosophizing about whether we're in full control of our lives, or if what we do is the result of what happened billions of years ago, the creation of everything.
My personal definition of life is: Anything that happens around us; It is the result of creation that happened billions of years ago that lead up to the Present.

If this is the case, did life lead me to do meditation today? For people who live by desire and preferences, does this mean that the creation of everything led up to them craving things? If I detach myself from "liking things" and "disliking things", am I fully in control of what I do-- or did the creation of life led me to this point?

If life is the result, is there really a point to anything?

For me, I believe there is so. Because there's a lot of unique things that happen in life that I've yet to experience and still experience. Even if I may not be fully in control, I like to think I do the best that I can with what life throws at me, looking inward to see that I'm struggling but able to move forward.

It is this reason why I dismiss the thought when I came across it, because there are things to enjoy and experience life, and being calm and at peace with the inner chaos and absolute silence within myself.

Day 21 done
The sages of old have all been saying the same thing in one way or another. "You don't seek to help yourself, but to help others, and abundance will come to you". I actually heard it from Mr Rogers.
I've been thinking about it a lot, considering the recent Elon Musk tweet. It got me thinking,....so Elon doesn't really care about his networth, but to bring value to others. The money followed. It was automatic and essential in order to be able to provide more value. Isn't that mind boggling? My mind was picturing it. Hence i could not meditate to my best ability, but ponder.

Thanks. For the time being I'd rather stick just to the 60 minutes as I don't want to take on too much active meditation during this "challenge." I can experiment afterward.

Thank you for the post. As much as I like to think otherwise, I still sometimes struggle to let go of preferences.

Who of us here doesn't? I think most, if not everyone here, is only beginning to understand what it means to have a preference because until now, we've just blindly followed them without ever questioning anything.

Michael A. Singer talks in lesson 6 of the course that it's not the "negative" emotions like sadness, grief, etc. that are the problem. It's that we can't handle these emotions. We aren't comfortable with the "lower notes" so we suppress them, adding even more blockages to deal with later on in the future.

So, what I wanted to say, is that you shouldn't feel pressured to move on to "enjoy the better joys of life." It's okay to experience the bad stuff as long as you let it run its course without suppressing it.

Quote regarding the "end" goal mindset we're after:

"Things are gonna happen and they're gonna hit my heart, and my heart is going to feel a certain way, and I'm going to be okay with that."

It reminds me a lot of Stoicism.

@MTF and I are still recovering from the first rejection so maybe go easy on us if we played any part in it for you today

"Things are gonna happen and they're gonna hit my heart, and my heart is going to feel a certain way, and I'm going to be okay with that."

Love this quote.

If it's a negative hit, the next step I do is find any way, reason, opportunity, or thought that could make it easier on my heart.

If it's a positive hit, then I take whatever time is needed to feel it completely and store it away with details to relive it as often as possible.

Day 26 completed. I would have completely lost count if not for being able to check in here.

What's really cool is it means this isn't just 60 days for me; I will be doing a form of this for all my years to come.

Such a big thank you @MTF!

Imagine the countless lives touched from those you've inspired and guided in all of your writing and sharing? Just. Wow!! If I could send you an endless supply of sunshine right this minute, it wouldn't be enough to show you the magnitude I'd estimate nor my amount of gratitude.

Words can't express how much your post helped me out in a significant way.
These are the words that I needed to help me get past my ordeal and fully accept everything about myself.

I will definitely check out the course this month, so once again thank you!

As @Sheens has posted, this thread you started has brought the readers of this forum to go on a spiritual and internal journey based on our experiences meditating for 60 days. If it weren't for this thread, none of this would have ever happened nor mattered!

With that said, we're almost halfway done with this challenge!
As far as I know, I like to think I don't ever want to stop meditating for days, weeks, months, and for years to come!

Day 27 completed.

Wow. The first 20 minutes of this session (or so, I never look at the timer during meditation) I was as close to an empty mind as never before.

I don't know why. I just started meditating and immediately entered a deeply peaceful, natural state where I had few to no thoughts. And even if any thoughts appeared, they melted quickly and without any resistance. It was blissful. I could have sat like that for hours and it would still be great.

It was somewhat close to the feeling you get when you're falling asleep after a tiring, but very satisfying day. You're so tired your mind is empty and physically you're kind of "melting" in the bed. Only during meditation I was very awake (not like the previous days half-awake).

After 20 minutes more thoughts appeared and it was less peaceful but still way more peaceful than pretty much any previous session. I was surprised how quickly the hour went by.

Thank you for your kind words but I'm just the messenger. I'm happy to see how valuable you find the practice.

As im also doing the 75 Hard from @Fox 's thread I left many tasks until late and got overwhelmed.

75Hard is sort of like the opposite of what we're doing here. It assumes that the solution to all problems it the outer world and/or more self-discipline. I gave up with 75Hard after several weeks of frustration and no real benefits.

Words can't express how much your post helped me out in a significant way.
These are the words that I needed to help me get past my ordeal and fully accept everything about myself.

I'm glad to hear these words were helpful. I'm sure you'll greatly enjoy the course. Prepare to take a lot of notes but also be patient because he's building everything piece by piece and doesn't give you tips right away; it's more teaching through letting you realize certain truths and then you figuring out what to do.

Day 27

Wow, an hour completely passed by so quickly that I thought I might've fallen asleep.
There weren't any thoughts that bothered me, but the ones that did come up became silent as soon as I let them go, run their (short) course, and just sit there. I visualized myself falling into the dark void of space accepting everything that happens.

It was a great experience when you don't have to think too hard on anything, you become at peace with yourself.

Hello guys,
In the past 21 days, i found out a lot about my self. I always have a journal by my side before i start. When I'm done, i jot down whatever comes to me. In the process, i found out a lot about myself and my problems. Some of which are, my "ADHD", my addiction to the internet, and my insensitivity to others. At the core of it, Technology....my phone mostly. I'm deep into the bossom of consumerism. It's an addiction no one is talking about. Then i discovered a post by @Andyblack . He suggested that why don't we be producers, rather than consumers and gave some examples. It struck me,

-"The things we own end up owning us".

I'm taking a 30 day hiatus from the forum and the internet to clear my thoughts, and to "not consume, but produce" i.e no reading any self help book, no blog posts, no movies e.t.c. I'd just create things, and do things myself, rather than browse everything that challenges me. I won't buy or use anything that's not essential--Stoicism. I'd still continue the meditation, I'll use a journal to log my progress instead, I'll post after thirty days about my experience. I've been able to keep up with the meditation because of the forum. In the process, i formed an habit of waking up 4am. Which i haven't been able to do in forever. It feels good. I'll continue in that spirit.

DAY 7 Completed.

Some Insights since Day 3:

1. Sit Comfortable - Sitting cross-legged for one hour creates leg pain during meditating. In the end, I felt like doing planks than meditation. Now I have switched to sitting on a chair keeping my spine and head erect (otherwise I would sleep).

2. Good sleep - Avoid sleep deprivation. Without decent sleep, Meditation is very difficult. My mind was spitting so many popups, redirects and it became very tough to bring my attention to something.

3. Screen control - The biggest enemy that keeps my mind from having peace, is consuming too much info in a short span of time. I can see clearly how I am urged to check notifications and how my attention gets fragmented while looking at computers and mobile. Full-screen mode, Focus mode (Samsung devices), Greyscale are some tools I'm using to protect my attention.

When I feel the urge to quit during meditation, I chant this slogan in my mind "I am not this body(Breathing in), I am not even this mind(Breathing out)". It detaches me from the unbearable mental urges and physical discomforts. (Sadhguru trick)

Moving forward, I'm adding 10 mins of meditation breaks in the afternoon and night(before sleep). 60mins in the morning, 10mins in the noon, and 10mins before sleep.

Woke up with terrible stomach issues so my first try at meditation was cut short after just a few minutes. I tried again when it settled a little and managed to complete a full session later. Not comfortable but still practiced being present.

You get this session in at the massage today @ZCP?
I did. Very relaxing. Just drifted around. Would center on a topic then tried to 'melt it away' with a wide unspecific focus.

Was discussing meditation with my masseuse. She is big into yoga and wellness. I asked her about her experience. She had tried classes, guided, self, etc. ...... Her conclusion? As she wrinkled up her nose and shook her head side to side, she said 'sooo uhhhh, maybe not for me'. then shook her head again. She said everyone tells her that all these thoughts will weave in and out and she'll gain clarity and focus. Said she just sits there and nothing happens. No thoughts. Just wondering if something will happen next.

Sounds like she and I are at opposite end of the spectrum?

LOL if she's wondering if something will happen next, there you go, that's her "no thoughts."
