I posted about my business idea and I received a good amount of feedback, even though most of it was mixed I appreciate a lot of the comments. Will I always get mixed feedback from individuals, no matter the idea? Is there such a thing as a great idea or just great execution? Should I find a mentor of some sort to help with starting a business or just figure it out on my own and take a risk? I am a bit confused right now in how to get started. I know execution is more important but I wanted to know if I should have certain information before starting in general. Okay, thank you again.

Hi there.

With the right plan, your risk will be low. Feedback from the people who will benefit from your idea (your market) is really the only feedback that really matters. As a first step, try to get in front of the people that your product or service will be serving. Don't try to pitch the idea or sell it, but get their take on anything and everything related to it The problems they're facing. Issues with existing solutions to those problems. What your solution could offer that they won't find anywhere else.

That's the first layer of validation. Folks on this forum are fantastic, but they are not a substitute for talking to the people that your product or service is meant for.

I hope that helps and good luck :)

It's hard to start a business from 0. But definitely the only and the best path.
The only thing that helpt me in my last business was a co-owner who started it with me. We had a very different skillset so it was perfect. That's something the boosted my motivation, but otherwise, just start.

Let's start with the elephant in the room. There is no perfect idea for a business. There are no perfect businesses. Now, that's out of the way, how do you start? You start by trying stuff and seeing what works. You start small -- without putting your whole existence on the line. You build your knowledge and your skills in your chosen business direction to build your "working capital". This can be done with a real job that gives you the experience that you need to launch yourself. You can also volunteer your time to have different work and learning experiences. Most people who just jump into a business that isn't part of their work experience usually fail quickly. They forget that they must eat and have a place to live.
While you are learning and exploring, take small risks. Start some small side gigs. That will give you a chance to try a bunch of different ideas and pursuits. You can see what works and what doesn't work. And it will give you a circle of people to either serve through your gigs or to bounce your ideas off of. Think of all the things you can do that will hone your skills.
Here's an example. It's not sexy, but... A dog walking business gives you a chance to practice your selling skills. You must go get customers. You must show up as agreed. You must perform a service, for which you can ask for feedback and referrals. It has all the basic business elements with very little risk or start up costs. And there's a bunch of similar businesses. I have a couple good core businesses, and then I still have a few side gigs. I really believe in them. Best of luck!

If you havent read MJs books, please do.
You`ll get alot of calrity from them.

Good feedback from individuals doesnt count.
The market is the judge.
Thats not to say that you should ignore the people around you.
Bad ideas can be identified as bad in a pretty logical way.
Good ideas though, no way to be sure.
Only the market can tell you if an idea is good or not.

Is there such a thing as a great idea or just great execution?
Both exist and are separate.

Should I find a mentor of some sort to help with starting a business or just figure it out on my own and take a risk?
Why not do both?
Let yourself be mentored and figure out what you can on your own.

I know execution is more important but I wanted to know if I should have certain information before starting in general.
To put simply.
You dont know what you dont know and we as bystanders to your execution know even less than that.
There is no map to the forest!
You need to enter the forest and you`ll figure out what you need to know.
Then as you progress, you`ll learn it bit by bit.

I totally agree. I just listened to the book, "So Good They Can't Ignore You" By Cal Newport. It's a wonderful path toward being successful. It's very similar to my path that I took by trial and error.
