I'm sure that I'm not the only one when it comes to this, but phone usage has been one of the most difficult habits to break.

I primarily spend most of the time on my phone reading business emails and using skype for business, and I've tried in the past to attempt to limit the usage, but damn is it hard! It's like a drug!

Anyway, I recently came across the screen time feature on the updated version on my iPhone and it's a game changer!

By seeing the amount of time I spend daily, it's forced me to think about it each time I go to grab my phone. Instead of aimlessly reaching for it for whatever reason, I've quickly learned to resist the urge.

And when I do use it now, I think about the amount of time I'm spending on it and actually feel a strong desire to NOT want to overdue it.

Check out my decline week over week in my phone usage since I started using the feature (it sends me a notification every Sunday morning) I'm now down to right around one hour a day when I previously was at 2 and a half to 3 hours per day.

How much time do you spend on your phone daily, and have you tried to use this feature?

Would be curious to hear others thoughts and experiences!

I'm never on the phone at all. I don't text messages. I basically use my phone for education if I don't have my laptop available. I've never been a phone person. Unless I have too use the phone, I don't. When I did have one, it was mainly used for work purposes and on call as a nurse aide.

1 hour and 9 minutes? Holy crap. That is impressive. Or maybe I am just on my phone WAY too much. Instagram is my black hole of time. But I'm not following many friends or family, celebs, or pop culture garbage. I mainly follow others in my space (tech/development) and other entrepreneurs. My Instagram time is close to 1.5 hours a day, with total screen time at 5 hours

I only use text. Last month I had exactly 5000 texts. Normally it's 3500-5000. I look for that to go up in 2019. The more time I'm on my phone = the more money I make so I guess, as usual, I'm different than everyone else :)

If I do call someone or get a call, it is from a friend or family and I use my headphones so if I want to be doing something else, I can. I don't take business calls except from my long time business partner. Even the small businesses I'm associated with text me. That way we can keep track of what was said. I do not use my phone for the internet.

Same as @biophase ... about 4 hours 20 mins daily this past week.

I use my phone for:
  • Basecamp
  • Google calendar
  • gmail
  • phone calls
  • Skype calls
  • Facebook calls
  • Facebook messaging
  • Skype messaging
  • Whatsapp messaging
  • Posting in TFLF
  • Posting in a couple of Facebook groups
  • Updating Trello lists with ideas
  • Running searches and taking screenshots of search results and landing pages.
  • Oh, and for downtime watching YouTube videos of rugby, boxing, etc.

I think it's a good thing I can run a lot of my business from my phone. It means I'm not spending so much time at the coalface in Google Ads or Excel - where I'm using my two 24" monitors.

I think it depends what you’re using it for.

Instagram/Facebook/YouTube? No

Sending invoices/project management/collaboration? Hell yes

Seeing as I want to own a location independent business, how cool would it be if I could manage EVERYTHING from my pocket?!?!

I’m running 5 - 6 hours/day.

1. Outlook email and calendar (day job).

2. Texts and calls for day job, personal and business.

3. Gmail - Multiple accounts for importing, business and personal.

4. YouTube/Udemy/Facebook for self education on my business.

5. FLF (usually don’t spend a lot of time daily on this, but there have been some damn good threads lately that I’m following.

6. Alibaba.com, for importing materials.

7. Virgin Pulse (health app) for day job wellness incentive program. Counts steps, workouts, calories, etc. and pays quarterly bonus for goals reached.

8. MapMyRide app by UnderArmour (for tracking bike rides/working out).

9. MyFitnessPal app by UnderArmour (love this app for wellness and workout/eating habits).

Three health apps and I’m still fat AF lol. Getting there though -

In a way, if we can’t run our business from our phone does it mean we haven’t delegated all the coal-face work?

I wonder if Richard Branson logs into a computer?

That’s why I look at all the laptop and hammock lifestyle blogs and wonder wtf they’re selling.

“Hey wantraprenuer! Next time you’re visiting a beach why don’t you do work you should have delegated or outsourced, instead of enjoying your surroundings and spending time with your loved ones!

Live the dream of getting eye strain and a bad neck surrounded by beautiful scenery and people you can’t interact with because you created a location independent j.o.b!!”

Could we controversially say that the tasks you can’t run from your phone might be tasks that could/should be outsourced?

I think we're getting very close to replacing laptops with our mobile phones.

The iPad is already 99% of the way there, and most of those apps work on iPhones too.

Samsungs DeX is headed in the right direction. Too bad android is terrible as a tablet/desktop OS.

On another note, MJ puts Human Resource business models as the last of the Fastlane models (with good reasons), but those same humans can perform desktop tasks for you while you're away.

Programming/Web Design are good examples of this. I've tried to make website edits from my mobile and it was a horrendous experience.

BUT, if I had a VA/freelancer I could ping the change to from my mobile.....

My usage is extremely low (about 30 min/day), but then again, I prefer using a computer and don't need my phone for much other than phone calls. My strategies:
  • I put my phone on a shelf behind my desk so I don't see it while I work
  • I have very few apps
  • Notifications are turned off
  • If I'm out and about and need the phone, I make it a point to take in my surroundings rather than have my eyes glued to a screen. Exceptions to this are only made for business.

Maybe around 30 minutes.. I've deleted Facebook app and I also don't have instagram or snapchat. So it is easypeasy! In the future I may need some of these platforms for business purposes. But it isn't hard to keep myself away from all the unnecessary shit.

I leave my phone unlocked on charge on my desk pretty much all day so unfortunately this is useless for me. I should probably stop that...
