If blogging is the business you wish to wish to start on wordpress, then you can definitely go for it. But a few things you should note is:

1. You forfeit control. If your primary monetization model is through affiliates or Google Adsense program, you are vulnerable to changes made by the affiliate providers or Google as the case maybe.

2. SEO. If your primary method of promotion is SEO, then also expect algorithm changes and instability in your traffic.

It's definitely a great business to start but you should be aware of the risks stated above.

Hey guys,

Not sure if this is the right place to ask this question, but I couldnt find any other place better than this to get some assistance from the web gurus.

I just purchase a hosting package from godaddy and installed wordpress over there. However when I try to visit the website it shows a certificate error something like this.

"Your PC doesn’t trust this website’s security certificate.

Error Code: DLG_FLAGS_INVALID_CA"

Does anyone have any idea what could be the issue?

Look into getting ssl/hhtps working with your configuration.

Cloudflare can provide free SSL certification via redirects. I've never been successful with it, but I know many websites use this. GoDaddy might also have free/cheap options, I'm not sure.

Thanks for the suggestion. Actually I had set up my blog's link to HTTPS while you are supposed to use HTTPS only when you have a certificate. However I moved back to HTTP now I have solved my issue.

It's worth looking into getting an SSL certificate in any case. Besides being a major bonus for security on the site, for anything requiring logins or dealing with payments where you don't want to be dealing with unencrypted traffic, Google seems to add some boost in rankings for sites served over HTTPS. (You can also run HTTP/2 with an SSL-ready server, but that's probably overkill/too nerdy to worry about for the time being.)

I don't know anything about GoDaddy or other shared hosting services, but on the VPS servers I run, I use the free certificates from Let's Encrypt. They offer a range of options for various hosting solutions, so you might be able to find one that works for you.

^Yes, let's encrypt and certbot work very well. I've been running linux with root access over SSH. Would have to google anything that isn't command line.

I think last it was just 'sudo certbot -nginx' or something like that and the prompt walked me through everything I needed.

Also, keep in mind that all of your linked files (javascript cdn, css, or others) that get loaded with your page will also need to be https for it to come out clean. Otherwise browsers will display a 'mixed content' warning. But, once you get that fixed up, you can embed pages into pages. For a while I was playing around with embedding an app with a UI into a wordpress page that way. Had to enable https or some browsers wouldn't even load the page without overriding it.

Thank you for your valuable advice. I checked with godaddy few days ago after rasing my concern here. I came to know that they allow Let's encrypt on their servers but it would be valid only for 90 days and I would have to re-install manually. However, it's a good option rather than spending huge amount of money at the initial stages.

Yes. My $15k/month blog is on WordPress.

Start small and scale. You don't need to invest $5000 in plugins and premium themes and shit before you test it.

You can set let's encrypt ssl's to auto-renew, do you have a VPS?

Starting my business with a WP front end and a Shopify backend.

If that’s a bad idea I’m open for suggestions!

Is that.. even possible? Why would you do this?

WP has WooCommerce.
I know I know.

I like the customization of WP and the Shopify platform is superior to woocommerce, especially dealing with inventory, integrations, and they have a mobile app.

Shopify is also cheaper at first than Woo. The recurring payments for Woo is $199.

Also, I’ve got bigger plans for an online store in the future that I will most definitely want to run with Shopify.

So for now it’s WP > checkout link > Shopify.

About, Wordpress, if you are planning to build a SAAS type of website, i would advise you against Wordpress. Wordpress is great if you are building a blog, or website based on content, or even a e-commerce. But beyond that, Wordpress may compromise you ( because of performance )
So What do you indicate?
