Hey there, fastlaners.

I am going to take slowlane path...for a while at least, it is not something I want to do, but there's no choice. My current situation doesn't help, I do not want to go to college but I will have to.
Let me tell you guys about my life: I have read the TMF , understand about it and want to live this way. Although I didn't find any need/desire/problem to solve and cash in, have no job and money. My parents want me to go to college, because that's their belief to sucess, therefore I will have to take this path, am going to take law school. I hope I will become a entrepreneur while it.

My parents want me to go to college, because that's their belief to sucess, therefore I will have to take this path, am going to take law school. I hope I will become a entrepreneur while it.

Grow up.

Seriously.

"My parents want me to spend 4-5 years of my life and tens of thousands (if not hundreds of thousands) on one of the most demanding programs available anywhere, so I guess I will, oh well, maybe I'll be an entrepreneur at the same time!"

I'm sorry but choosing to go to college is fine. Choosing not to go to college is fine.

Choosing to listen to other people dictate your life is not fine. It's cowardly and ignoble.

You will not be an entrepreneur while learning law. I'm sorry but that's like saying you'll be an entrepreneur while studying medicine. It's not going to happen.

You need to choose right now to listen to your parents like a child, or make your own decisions like an adult. Don't for a second think you "have" to do a god damn thing. You are either letting your life be run, or running your life. There is no force being applied here. You are either accepting the will of others, or exercising your own.

Are they paying for you to go?

If not why don't you move out and get a job?

When you get your job start saving your money.

When you have enough money you can start your business...

Why is this hard to understand for people?

In fairness, the concept of disobedience to ones' parents to exercise their own will is unique to American culture. I don't know anything about brazillian culture, but I would venture to say that obedience to your elders is probably the norm.

The critique that it is his life to live is factual, but doesn't take into account a couple decades of brainwashing and indoctrination into a certain way of life. Consider that someone were to argue the counter point to an American wanting to skip college (i.e. you should go to college so that you don't bring shame / dishonor onto your family) - how well would that go over here? Not very.

Tossing the script into the fireplace, as difficult as it is, is much easier here in the States, because our culture glorifies entrepreneurship and individualism (at least until the Bernie mob takes over).

Nevertheless, the criticisms are valid. You won't find entrepreneurship while doing what everybody else thinks you should do. It simply cannot happen, by definition. You have to have the courage to say no and go your own way. It will alienate your family for a time, but when the cash starts rolling in, they'll come around.

It's very true that fastlane is not for everyone, however I would caution against law as your choice given your motivations. If you are just going to college to please your parents and it isn't your ultimate goal to be a lawyer then I think you might struggle. Pick something easier if it's just going to be a throwaway degree you aren't going to use. Law is an incredibly challenging field even for those completely passionate and 100% motivated that that is what they ultimately want to do.

There is always a choice
For example, at first I wanted to study medicine just to make my family happy
But next year I start engineering studies because it interests me and I want it
From the age of 18 you are a master of yourself and if you do not make decisions about your life then others will decide for you
Take a long breath and decide
Because you are only at the beginning of your life

the point is not slowlane or fastlane

the point is regret

when you are on your death bed ,what will you say ?

will you say " my parents were right "

or will you say " i wish i had lived my own life "

i don't have the right answer for you and people here neither

only you can know the answer . this is your life

When I decided to write this, I imagined an answer like that. I'm 17, have no money, my country is in crisis, it's my last year at high shool, actually I have ono more year because I was disapprove at school last year, but when I turn 18 I can go to college. I was disapprove because I was reading a lot of book about entrepreneurship and didn't give a F*ck about the slowlane path but I dont regret . My parents are going to be crazy if I dont go to college, but I told them if I find a better way to make money I will follow it.

Here is a quick idea. If you parents want you to go to college so bad, sign up at SNHU. Take one class per quarter and if you qualify for financial aid, which hopefully you do, take as much money as they will allow. Invest your excess student loan funds or "living expenses" into your business idea.

This should give you enough runway to keep your parents happy while you create a business. Once you are profitable you can stop going into debt for the sake of your parents each month and run your business which should let you dig out of your debt hole pretty quickly. In the meantime try and find a few courses like accounting, business law or social media marketing that might actually help you with your business.

Sorry if the following seems harsh, because it really is meant in a constructive way:

I am going to take slowlane path...

Ok... Great. What are you expecting as a response? If you want to be an entrepreneur, then be one. If not, then don't. But coming here and saying you can't do it doesn't accomplish anything. Why do people come on this site and tell everyone that they've given up? I don't get it.

I have read the TMF , understand about it and want to live this way. Although I didn't find any need/desire/problem to solve and cash in, have no job and money. My parents want me to go to college, because that's their belief to sucess...

They know you better than anyone here. Maybe they want you to go to college specifically because you have no ideas, no job, and no money. What have you done to make them think otherwise? You should be thankful. No parent worth a damn wants to watch their kid pick a path that seems doomed.

I have ono more year because I was disapprove at school last year, but when I turn 18 I can go to college. I was disapprove because I was reading a lot of book about entrepreneurship

This is just my own opinion, but driving in the fastlane doesn't mean pissing away opportunities to learn. Staring out the window or reading a book during class while dreaming of being an entrepreneur doesn't make you an entrepreneur. It makes you a dreamer. Join an MLM if that is your approach to business. They *love* dreamers.

I told them if I find a better way to make money I will follow it.

So find it. But if you're hoping that someone on this forum will tell you what that path is, I think you'll be disappointed. That is yours and yours alone to discover.

When you start a business, you'll need to be able to learn from failures. When you meet people who are wiser than you, you'll need to pay attention to the lessons they've learned and any valuable advice they have. @Rickchise23 had some good advice regarding classes to take. Accounting, law, etc... are really good skills to have. When you are taking classes, try to focus on learning things that will help you as an entrepreneur later in life. Think of questions that you'd want to know the answer to if you did start a business, and then pay attention to the response.

The advice that MJ gave in a previous Gold thread seems relevant. Work hard, there's lots of time in the day, even if you are going to college or working a full time job.

GOLD - Worried Dad - Need "Fastlane" Insight

Great link and great advice to go with it. If you stumble upon a great business idea while in school and can validate it with sales, then you have a compelling case to argue with your parents.

Finally, not everyone has an opportunity to go to college. Not everyone's parents paid for it. In fact, not everyone has parents that give a rat's a$$ about what happens to them. Your life doesn't suck. Turn that fortune into something great.

Not everyone is fit to be on the fastlane
What is most important is what you want to learn, do not learn because your parents want you to learn.
This^^^^^^

What if the OP does not have what it takes to run a business? Most people come on to this forum talking about what they are going to do. Most don't succeed at it.

Also, is it slowlane to learn skills? I think not!!!!

You will not be an entrepreneur while learning law. I'm sorry but that's like saying you'll be an entrepreneur while studying medicine. It's not going to happen.

Plenty of famous entrepreneurs started their businesses while in college. Gates, Jobs, Dell, Zuckerberg, etc. Many of them dropped out to focus on their business, but that was after the business showed promise. Telling him he you can't start a business in college is like telling him you can't have a girl-friend while going to college.

If you are going to say the "odds are against him", no one on this forum should be worried about what people say their odds of success are. If they did, there wouldn't be anyone on this forum.

I was expecting what I got as responses. I knew that the answers would be harsh, just didn't know what would be said. There a lot of great entreprenuers here, why not talk about my situation and hear what they say ?

The rest of your post will be useful. Thank you.

Can you study abroad? Go get a degree in marketing or something and study entrepreneurship. Work the whole time and get experience and save money. Graduate and send the parents a pic of your degree while you're starting your own business. Whatever you do, don't feel sorry for yourself. Billions of people in this planet are worse off than you and have no opportunities you do. Guess what? They aren't feeling bad for themselves. They are fighting to survive. Find your fight and find your way.

And here is your OUT, clear as day, and endorsed by your father who's response was spot on.

If you want to be an entrepreneur bad enough, you'll create something worthy of dropping out, and get your dad's endorsement in the process.

But even if you don't do it in college but retain the vision, there's no rule book you can't do so after college.

Good luck.

It's my dream to live in USA, at least to study in the college, but the currency of my country is not strong, what means I cann't live in USA or any country better than mine. The only country I can live is Paraguay or Argentina, because my currency (Reais) is stronger, but I will have to go medical shool. And that's really hard to become an entrepreneur, there's no time to dedicate in this field. Thank you for the help, dude !
