My setup. I REALLY prefer the stand up desk setup. I'm so much more efficient and less fat making. Now just need a treadmill....LOL

I always like to sit at the edge of my seat. LOL. I only stand up when the Vikings win a super bowl.

I've worked at a stand up desk before and really like it but would like to have the option to sit as well. There are some adjustable height desks but I found a great lower cost alternative to those at http://www.varidesk.com/. It's on my list.

What kind of build are you running?
Are you talking about computer build, or the iOS app build? lol

The computer is an alienware with 3-24's, TV hooked up to it, and then the macbook pro/iPad for app testing

I have a bar stool for those times when standing is just too painful (after running, por ejemplo).

Yes. I stand much better, breathe more easily, and don't suffer from carpal tunnel syndrome/prodrome.

I notice alot of people having multiple displays... Is it because of the cool factor or does it actually improve productivity/organization? Jc

It helps productivity for me, a lot, when I have to work with multiple windows/applications at the same time.

@RWH3 My guess is, most people aren't aware of virtual desktop managers. I use linux systems with XFCE and can flip between desktops pretty much instantly with hotkeys. Eliminates the need for multiple monitors. I hate the split right at the center of vision witha dual setup, and also having to work with my neck twisted.

In the special case of traders (notice the 6-monitor setup was a trader's) it's mostly about ego...the computer equivalent of a showy supercar.

I'd imagine not. I use Mint for all my computing needs, and on occasion flipping between desktops has made things alot more organized/faster for me. Photoshop on one, internet and file manager on another.

Personally it is not about ego, for me at least. While I agree that virtual desktops are useful, I still am more productive with a duel setup. I tested the waters with a virtual desktop, and it just wasn't for me. I can still use hotkeys and navigate pretty quickly between any application using my tried and true method. :)

I have two monitors because it's much easier, for example, to write on one while looking at references on the other. I've found myself to be much more productive with two monitors. I think more than 3 probably doesn't do anything for most people, though.

That's not true.

Like @FionaS said, sometimes you want to write something while looking at something else at the same time. Sometimes you want to move data from an app to another. Or drag files from a place to another. And so many other things. Virtual Desktops don't solve this at all.

I know I can split the screen and do that too, but the windows sometimes get too small for what i want, and sometimes even with a split screen I use the second monitor for a third app.

I used to play poker semi professionally. One screen had the tables, and one had the stats constantly being refreshed.

Other than that I don't really 'need' two.

Definitely would be for a web designer/developer. Photoshop on one, Text editor/IDE on one & browser on another.

That's why I said more than 3. ;)

I'd love 3 monitors myself, once you get into 4 plus though, I feel like it may be too much for most. Sure, some people could use it effectively, but not the majority.

Multiple monitors is definitely more productive than flipping displays. When you have 2 spreadsheets flipping displays is the same as having multiple windows open. You can't see the numbers at the same time to compare. Same thing goes for comparing code lines, or comparing anything. IMO multiple monitors will increase your productivity if you use it right. If you just have email on one monitor and firefox on the other it really doesn't help you. I think for me, 4 would be perfect when I'm doing invoices and comparing financial statements.

I definitely use split windows when editing code, I could barely get by without that feature. Spreadsheets also allow you to use splits to view different parts of one sheet at the same time, and of course windows has had auto-tiling (vert or horizontal) for a long time. I do use a pretty large single monitor when feasible. Your field of vision is only so wide...ifyou have to turn your head and refocus you might as well flip displays, imho easier to refocus when you don't have to also move your head.

So this thread got me thinking this is the issue with my home office. Its boring and depressing. Is there site's out there that showcase office color schemes or bright offices that could roll some ideas?

I like @Nathan Douglas green and red combo, but i don't think I would like that green long term. I am terrible with colors and design though.

I also think getting a few more light sources in there would help as well, maybe a lit fish tank?

For colors/patterns - use google images, find a "model" home office you like. Then replicate with your own twists...also I'd probably lose the clown posters :)
