I've read the book, trolled the forums, reread my highlighted parts, and it seems the most important aspect of the book is the focus on NEED. If you can identify a good need that needs to be satisfied, you're well on your way.
The problem is, the Commandment of Need chapter is only 11 pages! I'm sure this is the step where 99% of readers get stuck and therefore deserves way more love than 11 pages. The chapter does do a great job of explaining the importance of focusing on consumer needs, but I feel it falls short by not giving any guidance or tools or ideas for actually going out and identifying needs. Sure, you can keep your ears open for when people say "I hate it when" or "This frustrates me..." but that's pretty passive and if you're hungry like me you want to DO SOMETHING NOW to try research what needs aren't being met.
So let's try to write the missing chapter - How To Find Customer Needs. What are some tools you guys have used, either successfully or unsuccessfully, to try to keep your finger on the pulse of what's needed by consumers? Here's something that I've used:
1. Go to https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal
2. Type "how to" in the search box.
3. Search results, get ideas for how much traffic certain "how to" search terms are getting
4. Create a product that answers or solves one of the "how to's"
Yes, this is internet marketing 101 stuff but I'd love to hear some other ideas. And anyone who knows of a relevant blog post that addresses the practice of finding needs as opposed to the philosophy of finding ideas, please post!
