Now is a good time to make friends with people who aren't pussies.

(Well, it's always a good time to do that, but especially now.)

Who here has seen WhistlinDiesel's Hilux videos? Has anyone here driven a Toyota Hilux? Wondering how to get one in Texas.
I’m a WD fan. Guilty pleasure.

Way better waste of time than arm chair commandoing, hobby epidemiology, and pretending to be a philosopher.

I just had a quick look at his videos and can’t see what made you want one?

They have heaps of them here in Australia, it’s the best selling Ute, I’ve driven plenty.

The older ones are known to be very reliable and hold their value. There’s a top gear episode where they try to destroy one that’s worth watching.

I have a V6 amarok and love it, best Ute of its size in my opinion, but anyone here would kill for an American Ute over one of them.

Hilux would have to be the most boring Ute in existence.

I was a passenger in one once and I remember I couldn't spread my legs out, so I never drove one.
The Amarok biTDI's are nice.
Unless you need the bed I would prefer a Landcruiser Amazon. They are basically commercial vehicles dressed up as civilian vehicles so have the durability.

I want it to drive off road on some acreage. They’re hard to get in the states.

Amaroks are really good off road. Much more capable than most people give them credit for.

There’s a series on YouTube where they use a Toyota Tacoma for overlanding, we don’t have tacomas here but they look cool, they just look like big hiluxs. Because you can’t get them here it makes me want one so maybe you are in the same boat with wanting a hilux.

Hilux are not even close to the number one pick for off-roading here.

Land cruisers which were mentioned above, and do come in single and duel cab Ute set ups are definitely a favourite, but very costly.

Ranger raptors are cool too but have a bit of a reputation for being owned by F*ckwits.

So if you want a Hilux you want to win them at Japan auctions then import them. If you can speak or learn Japanese, you could even make a business out of doing it. There used to be demand, I'm not sure if there is now. I once did some freelance work for a japanese import company in the UK and they were printing cash but this was back in the early 2000's when modified cars were everywhere. I bet there's still demand in rare parts for them though. /o/ on 4chan is probably where I would research that.

As joe rogan likes to constantly point out.

Most people have never dealt with real adversity.

The worst thing that’s happened to you is always the worst thing that’s happened to you.

For some that’s their dad cut their allowance off for a week. For others it’s far worse.
Live long enough, and death walks beside you. People who haven't experienced the worst should feel gratitude I think... the world has spared you from horror this long, at least. Cherish it.

Talking about the Hilux and off-roading... by some circumstance I was on a road in Zimbabwe, which I believe was called "National Highway 1" or something similar (definitely national and #1). Anyway, it was mostly a dirt road and it went over mountains and across ditches and looked like anything but the Interstate highways in the US. At one point, it wound around the side of a steep, high incline and came to a place where a landslide had completely erased the road, leaving an obviously impassable cliff. So what did we do? Well, driver said, "Everyone lean as far LEFT as you can, or we'll fall off the mountain!" Hard to argue with that on short notice, so we did. Only a horrible death was to the right, so why lean that way after all?

There are two other things I distinctly remember about this occasion:
  1. I was pretty sure we were perpendicular to the force of gravity in several places. Basically, we were sideways trying not to roll down a sheer cliff.
  2. The vehicle was a Land Rover. Not the ones Starbucks people drive their kids to school in. But a serious vehicle that lived up to the name. (I'm not sure if it had cup holders.)
I never liked the brand before that, but after crossing terrain that I never would have believed was crossable in one, I had to respect it.

Oh, also we survived.

I was at Panera bread. The guy in front of me his bill was $16.54. The cashier said would you like to round that up to $17 or $18?

The guy said yes.
She said $17 or $18?
He said $18.

And just like that they made an extra 9% in sales. It probably went to a charity but I found it interesting that she didn’t just ask to round to $17. She rounded up to $18 lol.

Next time she will ask would you like to round up to $20?

Do you know how this would go in a country where tipping isn't so strictly enforced?

- That's $16.54. Would you like to round that up to $17 or $18?
- No.

Usually, when this is asked in the US it is presented for a charitable cause. They ask if you want to round up for X charity, and it triggers social pressure because there are other people around and you don't want to look/feel like someone who isn't charitable. I've never had it presented as a tip question. Tips are enforced mainly through social pressure here as well.

As I recall, in Germany, tips are built into the price which avoids the social pressure aspect.

I’ve only ever seen this at those self- kiosks at Fast Food and Coffee places.

Around here they do it at local grocery stores and a few other places.

The most I've ever seen it was during a trip to London. Seemed like every store asked for charity money. I even went to see the play, Wicked, and at the end, the actors/actresses asked for money on stage, and then again at the doors as we were leaving.

Tipping isn't even a thing in Australia.

I mean it is, but it's not expected.

It's just something you might do if you feel generous.

Minimum wages in the USA are more than half of what it is in Australia, so from what I understand, if you don't do it in the USA, you are a dog.
