Hi Fastlaners,
My name is Darrell, and I am new to the Fastlane Forum. This is a big moment for me as I have known about The Fastlane Forum for about 5 years now, I originally discovered MJ DeMarco's work from a YouTube video by a creator named Joshua Fluke (
View: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y7FC7tunQd4
). He talked about how he was living an unscripted lifestyle and how "Unscripted" had helped him develop his mindset. His review was very good, and I knew that I had to get the book. I downloaded the audible version, and the book just spoke directly to me, like it could see me. I couldn't believe that there were other people who thought like me out there. I had felt like an outsider for the better part of 5 years at that point.
See, I have a job, a great job at that, but deep down I know that something isn't right, it just doesn't sit well with me. I watch others at the job, and I noticed that they only talked about things like sports, tv shows, and movies, they don't seem to have any higher goals. It seems like they are content with getting a pension, social security, and disability so that they can retire at 65 or 70. I am still friendly with them and get along well with everyone, and I am not knocking them for having these beliefs. There have been moments where I would talk about escaping the job or doing something different with my coworkers, but it's like they can hear me, but can't understand me, it's truly mind-blowing, so recently I decided to give up doing that.
I personally want to grow my own business because having grown up poor, and watching my parents struggle nearly everyday, inspired me to do better. My father passed several years ago and left my mother in an even worse position and I'd like to ease her burden. I just can't make enough to tackle that kind of problem in a 9-5 job. Also I have been working for about 15 years now, and no job has ever made me feel as though I was actually making any difference in the world, I feel like a drone waiting for my batteries to die. Having my own successful business would not only allow me to help my mother, but also help me better provide for my own family, and it would also allow me to provide real value to other people as well, all while giving me a sense of purpose.
I have also listened to MJ DeMarco's other books, TMF , The Great Rat Race Escape and even Wealth Exposed, I've probably listened to each of his books 50 times, not kidding. (They are all amazing!)
Currently I am still at my 9-5 job, but I have tried Amazon FBA twice, eBay twice, drop shipping once, and I almost started an ATM business, until I realized that it didn't meet the CENTS framework. I tried Amazon FBA, eBay, and drop shipping before I discovered the CENTS framework.
About 2 and half years ago I started another business called BidWorkers. BidWorkers is a mobile app that connects homeowners with local small to medium sized home repair professionals in a live bidding competition to solve the homeowners repair needs. The app allows homeowners to choose between various home repair professionals, based on ratings, reviews, price, and availability. The live bidding process is designed to lower the cost of repairs for the homeowners. Home repair pros can also benefit by having instant access to all available home repair jobs in their local area, picking and choosing which jobs to bid on freely. Before I launched to far into the idea I ran Google Ads and Facebook Ads to test the market, I created a landing page to gather peoples email addresses, and it worked surprisingly well. People would click the ads at a high rate and even give me their email addresses at a high rate, so I moved forward with the idea, a few months ago I launched the app in the Google Play Store and Apple App Store.
However, this is where my current problems began. Since launching the app I haven't had much success with getting people to use the app, I can get them to download it at a decent rate, but they just won't use it. I've tried tweaking the app to make it more user friendly, and so far it doesn't seem to make much of a difference. I feel like I have an execution problem, or my marketing isn't explaining the app well enough to get users over the skepticism phase.
If anyone here has any pieces of advice or words of wisdom, please share them with me.
Anyways, I know that this has been a long intro, but I hope that you guys enjoyed it and please let me know what you think.
