Is there anything worth seeing? Something recent, or near recent?

Please don't recommend a Superhero or Marvel movie, I hate them.

I like cerebral and human interest movies like Interstellar.

Typically the more action (car chases, shooting etc) there is, the more I hate the movie.

I haven't been to a movie in probably a year, maybe two. Can't remember the last time I was at a theater.

I thought Ad Astra would be good, but I didn't hear anything positive about it.

Midway looks intriguing and might tickle my WWII fascination.

Is there anything worth seeing?

What do you recommend for someone who is sick of tired of rehashed action (as if we need another car chase through the third-world market) and superhero nonsense?

I think you'll like this movie. It's not English but has subtitles available. It's called 3 idiots. It is an adaptation of the novel "Five Point Someone". The movie became a hit all over India (which is rare) and also all over china (which is even rarer). It's a fun coming of age film which also shares the philosophy of why success in education does not translate to success in life.

Edit: Sorry I missed where you said recent or near recent film. It's an oldie but goldie.

I haven't watched any recent movies so I can't really recommend any.

The only movie I would rate 10/10 is probably Forest Gump. It's a masterpiece.

I heard Joker triggered a bunch of people into complaining and R rated movie was too rough.
Doesn’t mean it will be good, but I can watch it at people with a smug look on my face.

Yes, I don't want to sound snob or salty but I did not really like the Joker movie. Neither did my wife. Besides a couple of "revelations" and new take on the character's past, nothing really happens for a long time.
Anyway all my respect to the ones that loved it and I'm sort of jealous that they were able to enjoy it that much.

It is not easy to find good ones these days. I've heard "Yesterday" is supposed to be really good. Did not see it yet.

I highly recommend reading Creativity, Inc. then watching all the Pixar films. Their process is incredible, and the storytelling is a superb example of tempering ideas in the fire for years.

The book gave me a great lens with which to watch the films.

Note: I'm probably also biased because most of my non-documentary watching is now done with two young children.

Do you like mind F*cks and not mind reading subtitles (might find it dubbed idk)? I've got what you need:

Contratiempo - The Invisible Guest

Nueve Reinas - (Nine Queens) This movie has 22 awards.

El Secreto de Sus Ojos - (The Secret in Their Eyes) There's a 2015 Hollywood remake, has bad reviews. Make sure you watch the original. The original won one Oscar (Best Foreign Language Film of the Year) and another 55 awards.

Nothing like Hollywood. Other countries films are told in different ways, you might like the change.

I haven’t actually watched. I suppose it goes to show something if my chief motivation would be “snowflakes didn’t like it, so I should watch it”.
Television wise, I’m hoping Picard will be good. I haven’t liked anything Star Trek since Voyager and Nemesis.

If you want intelligent entertainment you might have to start looking elsewhere. I'll assume you've already watch most Hollywood movies released up to 2015.

It's time to move on to Japanese media. Japan movies and series are heavily based in philosophy and psychology. Most people dismissed them because the medium looks childish. But Anime was never meant for children.

A good place to start would be:

Ghost In The Shell
Full Metal Alchemist

Devil Next Door on Netflix. Cerebral and real. Nazi war criminals and kangaroo courts anyone?

For WW2 - I'm assuming you've watched WWII in Color. If not, it's superbly made.

Yes, twice. I'm a WWII junkie. Vietnam as well.

Arrival is a great one that I’d recommend.

If you want to watch something weird - the original old boy in 2001 is one of my favorite movies. Beautiful and f*cked up. I know you said new, but I had to throw this in.

There’s also In Bruges and City of God.

City of God was great.

Cypher is one of my favourite movies - I think it has one of the best plots in a movie I've seen for a long time.

Cyrano de Bergerac is pretty good too (the old one).

I agree with you on Disney, Marvel, action movies with cars and gun chases. But... if you want to give action movies a try, I would totally recommend Baby Driver.

Thought I would hate it from the trailer. Friend had to drag me to the movie theatre, but damn its one of my favorite overall movies now. Will you learn anything? No. But it's a lot of fun with a good sound system.

As for human experience/ cerebral? I haven't seen anything good in this category recently. My go to for this stuff is Black Mirror.

My all time favorite - Mr Nobody. It's about a man, the last mortal human being interviewed about his life. He talks about his memories throughout his life-time and plays different alternative scenarios of what could have happened if he made a different choice.

It's one of those "thinking" movies. Every single decision can be life-changing. Even if it seems to be a minor detail with little to no importance.

It's definitely not the usual action, superhero fantasy scenario. This one makes you think.

The Japanese Movie Kaiji: Jinsei Gyakuten

There is a lot philosophy about entrepreneurship and taking risk in life to get free out of a system. In a much more drastically way.

Dont get irritated about the beginning. It hasn't much to do about gambling itself. If you understand the philosophy behind it. Highly recommended. You will love this movie.

Watch Missing 411 on youtube. It's free and definitely an interesting story. It is about children that have gone missing in the woods of North America.

As to warfare documentaries, I’d definitely recommend “The Girl who Forgave the Nazis”.
To quote a review on The Girl who Forgave the Nazis (TV Movie 2016) - IMDb:

"A documentary about holocaust survivor Eva Mozes Kor, who publicly - and very controversially - forgave all the Nazis. This documentary is very sad and moving and provides a lot of information about the concentration camps and the human experiments of twins by Dr. Josef Mengele, through the stories of Eva and three more holocaust survivors.

The film begins and ends with the trial of former Nazi Oskar Groning (who died last month) but it's not really the focus of the film. Seeing Eva hugging and kissing him during the trial is difficult and understandably, most of the holocaust survivors didn't take these actions kindly.

Very interesting documentary. It's very sad but gives a lot of information about the holocaust, through stories and archive footage."

It will surely move you, and stretch your mind. In times when I think I got it bad, or I should be mad about something, I watch movies about the holocaust. Very powerful medecine. I also refer to BOOK REVIEW - Man's Search for Meaning, by Viktor Frankl.

I found this on YouTube recently and absolutely loved it too; think you'd like it a lot, particularly the episode covering the philosophy of animal ethics (they don't take a side in any of the videos).

It filled in a lot of the holes I had in my history of philosophy and some of the big ideas:

Broken into bitesized videos so it was pretty easy to consume here and there.

One of my favorite reads. I have a notebook full of notes from this one.

American beauty. Represents scripted life to the tee on a lot of angles.

This might come surprising to you, but there are a lot extremely well written japanese visual novels with cerebral topics. There are a lot of people missing out on great writing, simply because some kind of "nah, no time, too nerdy" barrier.
The east has a great ability to write cerebral films, while the west tends to be more pragmatic.

Recommendations
Anime: For starters, the Fate/Zero and Fate/UBW anime series are pretty good.
Code Geass, Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood, Madoka Magica as well.
Korean series: Goblin and Sky Castle(romantic)
Maybe good korean movies....(anyone know some?)
Visual Novels(going more in-depth): Ever17, Saya no Uta, G Senjou Mahou, Sharin no Kuni(most include porn scenes, don´t know if there are G-rated versions)

Sorry if a bit of offtopic, but it´s close to the spirit of the thread :)

If you can find it paying locally, I would recommend the Lighthouse with Willem Dafoe & Robert Pattinson.
American film noir, thriller, weird/art film. Pretty great.
