I have a cousin that is 2nd degree BJJ black belt and he's a purple belt in something else. Anyway, I've talked to him a few times and he told me the oldest guy at his gym is 70 yrs old.Awesome, Im 35, 190lb and a 2 strip white belt from alliance bjj. Moved a year ago to TX and never joined again (healing some injuries). I boxed as a 14 year old in the PAL league. Im going to join an MMA gym like you because alliance only had 1 day a week for NoGI. All the guys used the GI against my athleticism. I feel like Ive got a few good years left before my body stops doing what it once did so id like to make the most of it.
Although, he's probably not training to compete. Try not to let the mindset of "I am too old" be a reason for doubt, fear, and ultimately not even trying. So many people I know personally, and even just observing the average stranger, all have this defeatist mindset around their age.
I've gotten more done in my life and made big strides in mental, emotional, physical, and financial health all in my late 30s and early 40s. All your experience, skills, failures, motivations, etc all seemed to coalesce at a certain point. And you just "have it" now.
That's why the people after shortcuts in life always fail and never get anywhere.
Meanwhile, these people obsessed with age being a limit to them continue to not apply themselves and let their potential slip away. They always tell themselves " I should have did this when I was 30 or 25" and they keep saying this year after year. As if, you can only be successful or talented or rich when you are young and if you missed this window, all your chances are gone.
The point I am making is don't let age be a factor in quitting or thinking you can't do something. You do have to be realistic sometimes. You can't be a 60 yr old man all padded up getting tackled by guys in their 20s and 30s in the NFL.
But there are still many other things you can do.
