Being a software engineer myself, I think this pattern of thinking comes from:If you have 15 years of SWE experience, I find it weird that your first instinct is to throw all of that away and move into physical businesses you know little about.
1. the software engineers are frequently listening to VCs,
2. VCs instilling a "winner takes it 80% of the market" mentality, and everyone else doesn't.
Which as I come to realize, is (likely) a load of bollocks. It's more of:
- 60% of TAM are not informed,
- 20% are loosely informed
- 10% are well-informed of a particular seller,
- 10% are actually buyers
- Of those, 60% buy from one company
- the rest 4% are buying from other companies.
Which leaves the question of - what will you do with the rest 90% of the market?
I'm saying the proportions loosely (it isn't one market anyway), but I'm saying that many are not even informed.

Edit: and so many others would just use human work for it! Think using a clerk instead of using a CRM and similar work.
