You may be tempted to lurk - in this forum, other forums, or in life.

You'll do better to participate instead.

Worried you don’t have value to add?

Start by giving thanks.

If you read something you like then don’t just hit the Like button.

Quote it, thank the poster, and explain why it helped you.

Here’s what’ll happen:

1) You’ll help the poster realise they’re not posting to the void.

2) You’ll encourage them to post again.

3) You’ll help them keep going, possibly through dark times.

4) You’ll get into the habit of “giving thanks” where you explain how it’s helped you.

5) You’ll start being seen as someone who appreciates and supports others.

6) You’ll slowly move from team consumer to team producer.

7) You’ll start making friends, building relationships, and creating win-wins (the essence of business).

Try it and see what happens.

Come back and thank me later.
Great advice. I am a chronic lurker. Thanks

Thanks Andy for giving me a big insight and adding value to my life.
After reading this post, i took some minutes to analize why i rarely post comments on groups or forums and, finally and thanks your post, i realise i was unconsciously modulate to not add coments or giving feedback due the radical social media environment ... I read sometimes posts on fb groups which are becoming more and more radical in terms of beliefs, which means if you have a different opinion or a neutral opinion of whatever topic, you are attacked through negative comments about yourself or your belief by those who think there is only one right belief/opinion about X (health, investment, learning language, living cost, etc) topic. Even in posts like yours on fb or other social media (that only add value to people's life), there are always people ready to find and say what it is wrong on your post and they try to bring you down, although your goal was just to help.
So now thank to you, i can give myself a chance to comment without that thinking of "im not good enough to comment, i dont have any value, my opinion could affect the person post owner, others could reply me and showing me that my comment is wrong due this and that". Thank you so much

Thanks for sharing this. I'm sure a lot of people worry about negative comments and trolls.

Here's a tip:

Feel sorry for the people who post negatively - they're often having a bad day or bad life.

Thank you, as I am a hardcore lurker. I disqualify myself from posting a lot of times. I've been meditating to get rid of the negative voice in my head and I finished the book "The Surrender Experiment" recommended by MJ, which taught me a lot about not forcing things and just letting them flow.
Gonna give that book a read thanks for the recommendation

Ooo. Good the hear the video helped. I only created that recently trying to figure out this short video stuff. I thought I was waving my hand a bit much. Glad I just hit publish and stopped lurking on YouTube... : )

Thank you Andy, that is really kind of you. I just started lurking back on the forum after being off for a while. Your post helped me with 3 things:
- I always say thank you in life, even for little things people do so this is encouraging me to keep that good habit.
- It helped me realize that people care. You didn't have to write this post but yet you did because you genuinely wanted to help people. I sometimes forget that people actually care so that's also a great reminder.
- It gave me a little confidence boost that "I can do it". I can build something great and get paid for it. The feeling of not being able to add value, feeling a little bit "unworthy" so to speak is always in the back of my mind but your post, gave me a little belief in myself that I can join team producer as well.

PS: I really enjoyed the video version. The human connection is even better when seeing/hearing you.

Thank you :)

Thank you for providing insights and wisdom. I'm definitely a lurker when it comes to social media, so I'm pretty much an observer, consuming all the content but never producing any type of work. This really made me think back and connect the dots in my life and MJ's wisdom. I want to thank you and hope you'll have a nice day while I try to implement this. Thank you.

Very nice advice!

Plan to apply this approach to all internet communities that I'm in.

It changes my state from observer to participator and forces me to read what the author has said much more carefully and therefore understand it better.

Thanks!

Thank you for the reminder @Andy Black.

I would be better off if I started engaging on here rather than liking posts.

The mere lurker can just simply read a post and leave the forum, never to return. Until months or even years later when the FastLane Forum comes calling them back somehow.

I will admit you're one of my favorite posters on here and I get a lot of value and input from your threads.

Yes, that's exactly what thanking people does! It forces you to observe your surroundings, appreciate other people and the effort they put in, and moves you from team consumer to team producer.

Do it in the forum and watch what happens.

That we already know enough.
Thanks for posting this answer to a question from someone else. It has helped to crystallize in my mind an idea that I have been thinking about for a while.

It seems to me that the idea that in business we need to be competitive can cause people to hesitate, thinking that they aren't good enough to get started. I now assume that competitiveness is more to do with growth than startup.

It reminds me of a time a few years ago when I went through a spell of being evicted from a couple of rental properties because both my landlords had financial difficulties, so I used the same removal firm on both occasions. I remember the removal firm boss speaking about his business once and describing it by saying "We move boxes, that's all we do".

At the time I was confused because I thought that just doing that would leave him vulnerable to competition.

Now I realise, as you have stated above, that he knew enough to be able to have a viable business even though it seemed that what he was doing was 'too simple' to make any money.

Thanks again for making things clearer for me.
