As many of you can relate, I am constantly stressed. Stressed about not making it to the gym, stressed about remembering to send an important email, stressed about a deal; without question, stress is a major part of my daily life.

And it's bad for you, negative effects of constant stress can include headaches, upset stomach, elevated blood pressure, chest pain, and problems sleeping to name a few. Even worse, evidence suggests that stress can shorten your lifespan and increase your chances of heart attack.

After noticing that I'm living under almost constant stress and learning that it is something that it has negative effects both mentally and physically, I'm interested to hear what others have done to combat this.

So let's hear it, stress relief, management, and prevention strategies. What has worked for you?

Getting old helped me. :D

I have found, the hard way that when things were stressful, take a time out. Time away alone with quiet or outdoors and clear the mind (no thinking or as little as possible). This can be 10-60min. It is as hard as hell at first but it does make a difference, for me at least. Usually this is when my best ideas come to me also.

I recently heard of The Work of Byron Katie. Seems so simple as if it shouldn't work. It does for so many. Wouldn't hurt to browse the website and see what it's about.

Good for you for recognizing your stress and knowing you should deal with it.

Stressed about not making it to the gym,

The funny part is that if you started making it to the gym you'd be less stressed in all other aspects of your life.

If you hate the gym - join a regular activity.

I personally love playing squash. It's cheap, it's AMAZINGLY fun, and you only need to twist the arm of 1 other person to play (and you will both be accountable to each other for showing up). Seriously - grab a buddy who can't stand the gym and go play a game.

Mike39,

I know how you feel man, trying to make your way to the Fastlane is stressful! I made a post earlier about this but I'd say your diet is the most important aspect of managing stress. Don't drink like crazy and def don't eat any sugar. Once your diet improves, you'll want to get more results with exercise. Once you do that, your mindset will change dramatically. Fix your mindset first, that drives everything else!

It's just a ride, a game, don't take business or life so seriously. Try not to be so attached to the outcome, after-all success in life is always a numbers game, you need customers, but not any particular customer. We are all going to be dead someday...

Tim Ferris explains in the four hour work week, which I'm currently reading. How the 80/20 principle saved him from depression
and doubled his profits by doing LESS.

Here are two truisms that really made alot of sense to me :

1 Doing something unimportant well does not make it important.
2 Requiring a lot of time does not make something

You probably have done so already but maybe just having 1-2 big objectives a day that bring you a step closer to your goals?
Stripping down to the 20% that produces 80% ?

Tim said he had 120 wholesale customers and only five were bringing in 95% of the total revenue.
He spent 98% of his time chasing the others, because the five that did order. Unlike the majority. Ordered without being
persuaded or called up again. He claims 100% of his stress and problems were coming from the customers
who he was chasing around.

So he took a more passive approach with them, no more emailing or attempts of persuading. If they ordered good
if not he ensured he never chased. Then by focusing on only those top 5 customers Tim identified their common characteristics
and secured three more, who were similar.

He then focused on simply duplicating his strengths. In this scenario that would be his top producers and focused on increasing the size and frequency of their orders

Thus equaling less stress and effort and much more profits and happiness .

Hope you can take something from that ;)

some things i've found helpful broooo

Another thing

I remember in James Altuchers Choose yourself the idea of setting aside 3-5 hours
for result producing activities and then just enjoying the rest of the day, basically
its similar to the 80/20 rule, instead of just being "busy". Focus on being productive and
producing them main results and that's it, then do whatever the fooooook youuu wanaaaa dooooO!

Also I find that watching Frank Yang here sometimes when I'm feeling bored with gym really helps me...
( for me it does lol) whatdyu guys think ?

Train at the gym or at home. Squats and HIIT, bring out and balance out your testosterone and other hormones. Stretch after every exercise.
Sleep. Don't listen to the rah rah rah 'i sleep 3 hours a day GRIIIIND' people IF THAT ISN'T YOU. Be rested, be ready, make your hour of work count.
Eat a balanced diet. You do not need sugars and saturated fats. Get a lot of nutrients in. Drink a lot of water.

Avoid doing things that are against your character. If you don't like eating at an Italian but eat there because of a girlfriend - stop. If you like wearing Hawaiian Shirts in the summer, wear F*cking hawaiian shirts in the summer. If someone at the dinner table insults you subtly and you don't want to play snake games - call them out clean. Find the source of the problem and eradicate them. (This DOES include when the problem is inside you, for example, limiting mindsets.)

I expect to be ripped for this, because it is opposed to the hardheaded approach of 'learning to cope with them'. (Some things, you will have to cope with, but I'm amazed how much shit people put up with under some misguided pretense of responsibility.) You owe people much less than you think.

Also, minimize/stop masturbating to porn if you do that. Within 10 days, you should feel your moods become more stable and calculated. This is from experience.

Seeing as marijuana is legal in my state of Washington, marijuana! It's been the ultimate stress reliever allowing me to maximize my productivity by minimizing my stress levels. The boosted creativity and hyper-brain activity also make anything I work on extremely interesting.

Every morning I wake up, head to the gym for an hour, and come back and drink a kale, spinach, and protein smoothie. By the time I sit down at my desk, my brain is entirely cleared and ready for a long day of work.

I really have two modes in life and I choose to stick to one or the other at all times: working or socializing. If I'm free, I'm doing something productive up until the moment someone shows up at my door or I'm off to meet up with someone. Making time to stay in the nightclub scene that I love so dearly 2-3 nights a week makes the rest of the week so much better. There was a time several months ago when I quit going out on the weekends (and often weekdays). I ended up playing video games and trolling reddit more than I had my work open. When I started dedicating time to going out again, I found I was able to work sun up to sun down on my work only days, and stay productive 100% of my work designated time.

Goodluck!

I'm massively stressed too, but I've found a few things help.

The gym: I go in, lift with intensity, and I feel better. I haven't gone to the gym in months because I haven't had a membership due to me being in the middle of moving + uncertainty about where I'd be living.

Sleep at regular time: Set designated time during the day to sleep. It helps. Seriously.

Wasting time: You're gonna laugh, but... seriously. Take a day to do nothing productive at all. Make it a GOAL to be unproductive for one day. Don't answer the phone, don't check your e-mail, don't do anything. Do whatever you like to do: some people like to party, I like to be alone and play video games.

Hope it helps.

Green tea/theanine, valerian. And go to the spa and get a massage! I spent 6 hours at the spa with my wife today, got the body massage, sauna time, hot stone foot massage, etc. I went along with my wife the first time she dragged me to the spa to appease her, and I might be violating man-law, but im hooked. It is well worth it. At least once a week I put on some headphones with deep meditation music or relaxation music on youtube, turn off the lights and just clear my thoughts for at least an hour or two, that's also helped a lot.

Exercise - Clearing Off Your Mental Desk

Part 1 - Get a blank piece of paper and something to write with.

Write down everything that is on your mind. Do it for 5, 10, 15 minutes...just go on as long as you need. Again, write down everything that comes to mind....

Part 2 - Put a check-mark next to everything outside your control, and put a star next to everything within your control.

Take all the items with a star next to them and put them on a separate list. List them in order of the highest priority (those are the things you need to work on for the next few months of years). Get very clear on what you now know you need to focus on.

Then look at all the items that have a check-mark next to them and consciously let them go. Just let them go...

Do the exercise. I am sure it will help you because it cleared my mind haha. I'm much more relaxed now :D

Personally, I have been doing these two things and noticed great changes...

1) Go to the gym every day if possible. Spend around 30 minutes there, and do what you find fitting to kick a$$ and get blood flowing. Could be more difficult if the gym isn't close to you, but its about 150 paces away from me. Doing this (ideally in the morning before eating) will not only kickstart your day, but also your metabolism, because you'll be fresh from sleeping and have no carbs to use for energy which means you'll be burning maximum fat. Work out too long and you may start tapping into muscle for energy (big no-no).

This will give you more energy throughout the day, you'll lose weight and feel better more consistently, and it doesnt take a big chunk of your day.

2) Listen to relaxing music. Personal favorites of mine: York & Sunlounger. Sunlounger/DJ Shah produces his relaxing vibes while staring into the ocean from a beachfront paradise, so he is translating the experience directly to your ears. Its bliss. There are too many studies to show the benefits of listening to this kind of music. It works, and it helps with a lot more than just stress. It's motivating. By listening I: feel less stressed, more motivated to work so I can get a beach-house and finally produce my music in that setting, and I feel happier because its happy-music.

Hope this helps!

I like to meditate for 10-15 minutes and just try to cut out all the negative thoughts in my mind, and realize these thoughts are of non-existent events predicted in the future by my mind. Afterwards I feel really present to the moment and just blessed to be alive and healthy.

All are awesome recommendations.

Working for a health startup in California for 11/2 years I have a stress stack:

- Meditate using the Calm app on iPhone for 5-10 minutes
- Calm Card or any form of affirmation program you can record and listen to
- Bioenergy workout in the morning (Check out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zD-3j2g9w9U)
- emWave; this device will transform your stress response forever and help you control your stress response. Go to the tech part of the site: http://www.upgradedself.com/?a_aid=52489b2e66530
- Workout x2/week
- SLEEP! (Blackout room, GABA before bed, 7-9 hours depending on your body, mask, and a good wake up alarm)
- Minimize junk food and sugar

"...in balance: you have no bad emotional situations/relationships happening or you are doing your best to stay engaged from them.

You are keeping physically healthy, limiting (or eliminating) alcohol, eating well, and sleeping well.

And spiritually... you realize that you can't control everything in your life, cultivating a sense of surrender to the present moment as opposed to time traveling to your regrets from the past and your fears of the future."

Something that I noticed lately is how many NFL head coaches seem to be undergoing severe health problems. Others have very serious problems at home as well. It has to be due to the high demand of the position and stresses associated.

How to combat this?

You need to find things that you love to do. Separate from everyone and disconnected from the world where you can exist and have a clear head. Without this, you will continue to build stresses up.

Another part of defeating stress is self control. The ability to disconnect, turn off the computer and put away your phone. Spend time with your significant other or family. Go throw a ball with your dog.

Each of us will deal with this differently, but I think it's about control. Self-control to prevent the outside forces from taking over and preventing you from enjoying your life. Business will always be there. Problems will always be there. It's up to you to decide how you will live every single day.

Oh also,

Kratom.

Go to goodlookingloser (google it, IDK if I can post sites here) and learn about Kratom.

Goodlookingloser is to life improvement what the fastlane forum is to financial improvement.

I would also like to add from the experience I've had plenty of, but have not fully learned from. 9/10, it's probably a rut that you are in. When you are in stress, you will feel like this mindstate is permanent. You tell yourself 'It'll go away' but it doesn't. And then you start making peace with your mindset and adapting your life to it very fast. I do this a lot and it isn't good, too often it led me to being close to the edge of making moronic decisions.

Other than the obvious advice of 'remember, it's just a rut, it will go away.' I recommend that you positively SURPRISE yourself. Plenty of times what helped me was doing something that I either enjoy, or better yet, enjoy and used to enjoy. Seeing old friends and catching up for example. I remember one time I had a SHITTY month (it wasn't a rut, that was legitimately shitty) but seeing an old friend, doing some boxing and jiu jitsu made me forget about things a little. I talked to him, got his emotionally-unaffected perspective on the matter, and came back with strength. Sometimes a combo of pleasure and SURPRISE will push you back in the right direction.

I love this world and everyone in it

If you are still in this position, which I doubt after those great tips above, this works great for me;

Working out, clean eating, meditating, SMILING, socializing, uplifting music, good sleep, watching a movie, going outside get some fresh air...

And accept things instead of fighting everything. If you try to fight the fact that you are stressed you will drain more energy and make it worse.

Here is also a great video about how you can deal with feeling depressed, might help you out!

The joy and adrenaline that comes from completing tasks and moving closer to my over all business goals has over time helped me overcome and for the most part eliminate stress. Also, when I was in school, one of my friends saw how stressed I was and told me: "When you're stressed out, think about the WORST possible outcome to whatever you're stressed about. IF you're stressed that your shipments won't make it to the post office on time, what's the worst that will happen? Your customer won't get the package for an additional day. You won't die, your leg won't fall off.... Now take a step back...... and say "F*ck it"......" I laughed when he said that, but since then I've gone with the "I'm stressed out, what's the worst that can happen???... F*ck it" and I've honestly been able to handle stressful situations much better.

For me it's jiu jitsu, sex, weed.

Jiu Jitsu - It engages the mind and body and one enters a certain 'flow state'. There are infinite possibilities in the game and one has to be very in the moment to thrive. Stressing about a business, health, relationships etc. dissolve as one focuses on the now which is trying to get a dominate position and submit the opponent. I find jiu jitsu is almost a meditation of sorts with physical and mental benefits... Not to mention there is no substitute for the social benefits that guys get to have w/ 'locker room' style talk.

Sex - Great sex in a meaningful relationship is another flow state type of activity. Instead of trying to submit the opponent the goal is maximum pleasure for both parties. Excellent for a quick reset and there are many documented health benefits to a healthy sex life.

Medicinal Cannabis - I believe herb is a gift from God, responsible use promotes peace and relaxation. If people used herb how people are supposed to use alcohol (A drink or two vs. a toke or two in the evening hours) then we wouldn't have these stoner type stereotypes. I have an MMJ card in my state and suffer from Ulcerative Colitis a form of IBD. Cannabis helps relax my mind and my guts by minimizing the spasms.

Of course regular sleeping habits depending on what your body likes (some people need less than others) is important alongside with a diet full of healthy greens and healthy fats+proteins, avoiding the grains, sugars and processed BS. During the day I drink white tea, which is young green tea leaves and at night i sip chamomile.

I occasionally meditate and it works very well but I have the hardest time regularly practicing.

now before i post i want to say i am sorry i didn't read the other posts i just did it so i don't lose the order of things i have to saz and i will read them after i post. stress is a bit*h and you just have to get rid of it or you can even expect a heart attack sooner than you think.
first of all you need to know you should love yourself more than anyone else (i know it might sound gay but to hell with it it's true) no one else will tell you hej slow it down a bit.get out of bed early, start your day with a song that feels right at that time of the day, FOR GODS SAKE SING It too, GET your mood up feel alive, feel good about yourself. do whatever you need to make yourself happy, that way you will radiate with positive vibrations and attract good things.

secondly DON't get friggen stressed about the things that can be DONE LATER, you late for gym? to hell with it lift furniture at home (joke, but you could do workout at home just to keep it up) you failed to send a mail? are you God and your mails decide on life or death? if yes please never forget to send me a life extending mail my email is...oh wait you know that xD so you are not God and the mails are not deciding on life and death. keep a reminder smart phones can keep you up with all the things you need to do. if you still failed to send a mail DON'T stress about it, everybody with a brain can be aware things like that can happen, just make sure you apologize for the delay. not one customer will bite your head off for not replying him in time and if he gets pissed get rid of him, there are too many people living in the world for you to worry about one customer and his email.

if by chance you get stressed about something don't bury your head in the sand look around find something that will produce a positive feeling, and smile life is beautiful we just have to see it from that perspective

1: Play with an animal

2: Eat at a favorite restaurant

3: Volunteer somewhere if possible

4: Play video games online or with some type of console

5: Entertain your inner child ( like doing stuff that you enjoyed doing as a kid)

18: Understand that problems don't exist and you're not the result of your circumstance. No matter the circumstance, you can chose your attitude. Problems aren't problems, its simply you're ego or the voice in your head that's telling you so. Fight the voice

19: Sit in a room, play some calming music. You don't want to be distrub during this so turn off your phone and make sure this is private.Relax. Visualize you're living an awesome happy successful life. Feel you're self smiling and laughing. Feel what success looks like, and see you living the success you want for yourself. See how relax you are in the future, how you're amazing it is. Do this daily for 30 days

20: Everyday have a list of affirmations to say to yourself in private
Ex:
I'm confident
I love myself
I am successful
Circumstances are what they are, but they don't define me
I am champion
I have strength beyond strength
I am problem solver
I love this world and everyone in it
I take risk's and push forward
I no longer fear change
I'm a an entrepreneur / wolf / mack daddy / boss / go getter / insert positive title for yourself
People's negative opinions about me, do not define me
I fix problems like Einstein, im a genius
I have an extraordinary life

21: Get a massage

22: Cut down on sugars, fats, fast foods, anything unhealthy for a good 30 days. These not only make you fat, but promote fat, stress & anxiety

23: talk it out with a friend

24: understand that whatever you're stressing about isn't as a big of a deal as you make it seem. Worst case scenario's rarely ever happen, and if you do you can always fix it. My math teacher said their's always a solution to every problem. Atleast two.
Awesome post. Good Stuff. It's got a few new things I will start trying.

Tai Chi: you can usually find a free class somewhere in town. As a form of exercise, it's great because it forces you to relax. It's not like lifting weights or running where you're pushing yourself.

Ginseng: Ginseng is an adaptogen, which is a chemical that specifically reduces stress. You can get an extract, but I like to take the root and make a tea out of it. You put it in a ceramic pot with a lid with a cup of water in it. Then you put that ceramic pot in a big pot with a rack and double boil it for thirty minutes. Then drink.

Ditch caffeine: caffeine just amps you up and makes your mind run when you really should be focused and calm.

Relax your shoulders: every fifteen minutes, do a shoulder check. Most likely, you're tensing up your shoulders and holding them up high.

Eat 50% fruits and vegetables: doing this makes your body run smoothly and gives you a type of energy you don't get from meat and carbs and sugars.
