The bot is very up front about all of this when you interact. You really want to verify any factual information. For instance, I asked it "What's 2 + 2?" and it would not give me an answer. It repeats a little spiel about being a large language model bla bla bla bla.

If you understand anything about neural networks, natural language processing, and AI/machine learning, you know that the model actually doesn't have access to information. Once it is trained, it no longer has access to the databases it was trained on. So really, you have to think of it like a Rube Goldberg machine. You give it a stimulus (your text entry) and it responds off of heuristics (biases). It's like if I put a tens unit on your bicep and shock it, your bicep contracts and lifts your arm. No thought is there, it's just a cascade of neural firings. Well, this technology is a neural network. It works exactly the same way. I think it uses RNN, among other things. I haven't read any of their research papers, but that's what the model said. Take it with a grain of salt.

So am I misunderstanding what is meant by "parameters"? It said that this has 175 billion parameters.

Is a parameter something like, "We fed it the contents of Wikipedia as one parameter" or am I totally missing the boat there?

Something I forgot to mention: while the bot wouldn't compute 2 + 2, it would explain HOW to compute 2 + 2. In the explanation it did actually return the sum of 4. After that, I queried it repeatedly as to why it could not compute 2 + 2, but could return an explanation with the correct sum. It won't really give a detailed technical response unless you take the conversation down that road.

I gave it another sum with variables - like 2x + 5x - and it would not compute it again. I asked it for an explanation of how to calculate it once more and it returned a perfect explanation with the INCORRECT SUM! Amazing. This is brilliant technology, but you really need to be aware of its limitations when using it.

(underlined is my prompts)

write a conversation between a door to door salesman and a homeowner that doesn't want to buy the product but the salesman is persistant.

Homeowner: I'm sorry, I'm not interested in buying your product today.
Salesman: That's too bad. Can I ask you why?
Homeowner: I just don't think it's something I need right now.
Salesman: I understand. Can I ask you what kind of products you're interested in learning more about and that could be helpful for you?
Homeowner: No, thank you. I'm not interested.
Salesman: Alright. Well, is there someone else in your household that might be interested?
Homeowner: No, I'm afraid not.
Salesman: Is there a reason why you wouldn't want to consider purchasing this product, or would you just prefer to look at other options?
Homeowner: I'm just not interested at this time. Thank you for your inquiry.

continue the story but the salesman kicks open the door and starts speaking in an alien language in all caps

Salesman: GRREYGLURR GLALOO DESHTRAY UUNDRAAV!!!
Homeowner: What in the world?! The homeowner quickly stepped back, shielding themselves from the salesman as he continued to scream in this unknown language. Suddenly, the salesman stopped and collapsed to the ground, exhausted.
Homeowner: Are you okay? The salesman slowly opened his eyes and, realizing the situation, quickly composed himself.
Salesman: Yes, I'm sorry. I must have been...daydreaming. I didn't mean to frighten you. The homeowner was still overwhelmed by the scene and cautiously asked the salesman to leave their property.
Salesman: Of course. My apologies again. Have a good day.

and then something ridiculous happens

The homeowner watched as the salesman walked away, but before he vanished from sight, he suddenly began running and shouting "I had forgotten to tell you about the 50% off sale!" before running around the block and out of sight. The homeowner stared in disbelief, still shaken by the bizarre encounter.
you should've asked the chatbot to make him get the sale after all that lol

It's probably a technical metric. It is probably pulled from engineering as a marketing line.

Makes asking the right questions more important than ever. Ask a vague bad question, get vague bad answers. Ask more niche questions get actually insightful ideas.

No this is probably true. Have you heard the term deep learning? Well, it's 175 billion parameters deep, I guess.

The model is probably mostly a recurrent neural network. Think of it like a pachinko machine. You drop in a coin and the pins bounce it around until it falls in a particular spot. In the analogy, your input is the coin. The particular characteristics of each pin are the parameters. Where the coin lands or how it lands is the bot's output.

In the network, for information to cascade from one node to the next line of nodes, it has to raise an activation function above some threshold. They tweak that threshold by setting a parameter. In reality, this is just a coefficient (a constant number multiplied by a variable) in a matrix multiplication.

If you want a high-level understanding of this, please see this masterful series of videos by Grant Sanderson. The first video in the list is probably the most relevant to your question.

This is probably really obvious to anyone who's familiar with code or following OpenAI on github, but I thought it would be interesting to those watching this thread.

I didn't *literally* think it was typed out by hand but was trying to get it to say more about where all the data came from.

My brain is spinning on "How can I create a profitable business using ChatGPT?" Putting that in a query resulted in an answer which basically said "Do your own research, buddy. That's not what we here for" :)

Was so interesting to copy MJD with the personal tweet. As my business has been helping photographers, it's dead on accurate.

Screenshot (245).png

It definitely affirms what I built by doing what you love and following my passion... until I read MJ's book and realized it might be better to focus on market NEED rather than my wants :)

I don't have an account yet, but I'm curious how it performs with healthcare-related stuff. Like can you give it a list of symptoms and have it suggest potential conditions that might match? Also, can it look up scientific studies? Can it summarize their findings in "regular language"?

Did that for you.
Sounds plausible to me (not a medical specialist in any way). Even with a disclaimer to consult your doctor attached.

It can't directly browse the internet so specific papers are unlikely for now. But it can summarize general scientific theories.

@MJ DeMarco I've been playing with this for a couple of days now and wanted to say a big thank you for sharing.

So far it's saved me at least 8 hours of work for less than an hour's effort. Today I used it to rewrite the Amazon description for my latest book. It made a superb job but what was surprising is that it generated text about things that I'd written about in the book but hadn't included in my description. It felt like it had read my book to create the description.

This is going to be such a useful tool for all kinds of tasks.

Yesterday I choosed to change my life a little bit so I decided to become a writer.

Here is my book sample about business called "Starting Your Own Business: A Step-by-Step Guide".

Chapter 1: The Idea

Starting a business can be an exciting and fulfilling experience, but it can also be daunting. Before you take the first steps, it's important to have a solid idea of what you want to do and how you're going to do it.

One of the first things to consider is the type of business you want to start. There are countless possibilities, from starting a small retail shop or a service-based business, to launching a tech startup or an e-commerce platform. The choice you make will depend on your interests, skills, and the market demand for your product or service.

Once you have a clear idea of the type of business you want to start, it's time to do some market research. This will help you understand your potential customers, the competition, and the trends in your industry. You can use online tools and resources, such as industry reports and market research databases, to gather this information. You can also talk to potential customers and competitors, and attend industry events to learn more.

After you've done your research, it's time to develop a business plan. This document will outline your business idea, the market you're targeting, and your plans for marketing, sales, and growth. It will also include your financial projections and a plan for funding, if needed. A solid business plan will help you stay organized and focused, and it will be essential for securing funding from investors or banks.

Once you have a business plan in place, you can start taking the first steps to launch your business. This might involve registering your business, securing financing, and setting up your business operations. It's important to be organized and to stay focused on your goals as you take these initial steps.

Starting a business can be challenging, but with a clear idea, market research, a solid business plan, and hard work, you can turn your dream into a successful reality.

Chapter 2: Legal Considerations

Once you have a clear idea for your business, it's important to consider the legal aspects of starting a company. This can include choosing the right business structure, registering your business, and obtaining any necessary licenses and permits.

One of the first decisions you'll need to make is the type of business structure you'll use. The most common options include sole proprietorship, partnership, corporation, and limited liability company (LLC). Each option has its own advantages and disadvantages, and the right choice will depend on your specific business and goals.

Once you've chosen a business structure, you'll need to register your business with the appropriate government agencies. This can include registering with your state's secretary of state office and obtaining an Employer Identification Number (EIN) from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).

In addition to registering your business, you'll also need to obtain any necessary licenses and permits. This can include a business license, a sales tax permit, and any industry-specific licenses. The requirements will vary depending on your location and the type of business you're starting, so it's important to research the specific requirements for your area.

In addition to the licenses and permits required by law, you may also need to consider other legal issues, such as contracts, intellectual property, and employment law. It's a good idea to consult with a lawyer who has experience with small businesses to ensure that you're taking the necessary steps to protect your business and comply with the law.

By taking the time to understand the legal considerations of starting a business, you can avoid potential problems and set your business up for success.

Chapter 3: Financing Your Business

Once you have a solid business plan and have taken care of the legal aspects of starting a company, you'll need to consider how you're going to finance your business. This can be a challenging step, but there are several options available to help you get the funding you need.

One of the most common ways to finance a small business is through personal savings or loans from friends and family. This can be a good option if you have a strong relationship with the people you're asking for money, and if they're willing to take on the risk of investing in your business.

Another option is to apply for a business loan from a bank or other financial institution. This can be a more formal and structured way to obtain funding, but it can also be more difficult to secure. You'll typically need to have a strong credit score and a solid business plan to qualify for a business loan.

Another option is to seek out investors who are willing to provide funding in exchange for equity in your company. This can be a good option if you have a high-growth potential business, but it also means giving up a portion of ownership in your company.

Finally, you can consider crowdfunding as a way to finance your business. This involves using an online platform to raise money from a large number of people, often in exchange for rewards or perks. This can be a good option if you have a strong online presence and a compelling story to tell.

No matter which financing option you choose, it's important to carefully consider the terms and conditions before accepting any funding. Make sure you understand the interest rate, repayment terms, and any other obligations you'll be taking on before agreeing to any financing.

By carefully considering your financing options and choosing the right one for your business, you can get the funding you need to turn your idea into a reality.

Interestingly enough one of humanity’s greatest problems nowadays is too much knowledge. The knowledge out there is much much greater than what you can learn in a reasonable time.

ChatGPT is positioned to solve that. Imagine a future where AI synthesizes ALL of human knowledge. Then what truly matters isn’t holding the answers in your head (knowledge), but rather knowing what questions to ask.

This tool will be a gamechanger across the board. In my field, I’ve shared this with the agency owners I’ve coached & mentored this year, and those who are involved in content creation find it a groundbreaker.

While plagiarising it may not be valuable (anyone can do that if they ask the same question), the real value is in using it as a tool to generate ideas. You’re stuck and looking for new ideas to write about -> ChatGPT can help.

I’ve just come off a meeting where I’ve worked with a content agency owner to help them integrate this into their content production process. It will greatly speed up both brainstorming and outlining, which are two of the steps we use.

Overall I see many possibilities with this - and lots of dangers for the businesses that refuse to adapt and learn!

Imagine all the improvements we can make to society now that we can use AI to think at 1000x the speed we normally would think at. The low-hanging fruit type jobs are definitely going to be killed off by this tech but now we can solve more interesting and complex human-centered problems that we previously didn't have time to solve because we were busy doing more mundane tasks.

As Isaac Newton said, "If I have seen farther, it's because I was standing on the shoulders of giants."

Similarly, using these tools we can help to push progress in many areas of society while filtering out the grift.

Agree 100%. It may cause disruption, but it's only a net win to gain this sort of ability.

This is a thing in machine learning. You make one model that generates (like ChatGPT) and another model that attempts to discern whether or not the output was machine generated or not. Then you pit them against one another. It's called a generative adversarial neural network. Super cool.
Yes. I've done some talks on the GAN approach. It does produce very good results in some cases. Among my favorites was AlphaGo, which used a GAN to train a Go playing (Baduk) AI. Probably the most uncannily smart machine out there, though the number of people in the West who can appreciate its accomplishment is limited.

They are also useful for producing sock puppet accounts, fake linkedin headshots, etc. Lots of fun projects in image generation with GANs... the gaffs even become a new kind of hilarious surreal art: https://thesecatsdonotexist.com/

Edit: Someone will probably say AlphaGo is not a GAN. However, I would contend that it is by nature, because it is trained by playing against itself (in the case of AlphaGo Zero especially). Not only does it judge correct vs incorrect moves, it attempts to prove the correctness or incorrectness with its own countermoves. By the end of many games, it hasn't just determined whether a move is good or bad, it has determined that about hundreds of moves in very fine degrees of certainty, and many different contexts.

Well it rarely works for me any longer as it always times out. Apparently the big secret is out and it is taxing the system.

I mean in terms of information search. I've already used this several times over Google and saved myself countless minutes of worthless filtering. I'm not using it to create SEO "content marketing" junk that fills the SERPS with useless phrases and keywords.
I just used it its crazy

Just an aside, I think it sets a wrong precedent to think: Oh I can just get the knowledge from google, from this AI whatever, I don't need to learn anything. I think on the contrary we always need to learn to stay sharp. Knowing what to learn and in what depth, I think it was on the key things that can give you an edge over competition. It's good to know that you have good sources of information to pull on, but you alone need to direct your learning and build the knowledge you need.

Of course, the tools could help with prioritising and accelerating the process of learning.

The value of this as a learning tool is huge. If you wanna build something and don't know where to start, this can be your guide. Like MJ said, way better than searching google and getting hit with ads trying to sell you courses and results based on SEO optimization.

Take this example, and follow the breadcrumbs. It might seem like too much information at first, but if you actually mix this with taking action and getting deep into the process over a year, this can be a game changer.

Once you start learning, it can help you with the development aspect as well. It's like having a personal research assistant at your fingertips.

While the answers above don't include all the information (you would also need to learn about computer graphics to do all the image transformations and filters for something like canva). As a starting point for someone not knowing where to begin, there is a crazy amount of value here. Following the guidance above, a few months later, that person would have a much better idea of where to go next and also know how to build the front end for a modern web app.

For someone with the right mindset, this can definitely be a rocket ship. I'm excited to see all the applications and how things evolve.

I told it to create for me a glass cutting optimization program in JavaScript where you supply the width and height of the cuts required, and the size of the glass sheets, and then it uses a branch and bound algorithm to optimize for the minimum glass sheets used.

It did it…

Something that years ago took me several weeks to do, when I worked on this software for a company where I had CMO role (not really related but no one else knew how to do it). This genius tool just spit out the code and I went over it and it was in the right direction, not quite as advanced as what I had built but it got the main logic right.

Imo this is also a threat to online communities where the main selling point is knowledge, rather than community. Anyone who just wants knowledge can use a tool like this.
