Do you have any suggestions on the topic of developing mental toughness? I feel developing a strong and unbreakable mind is not only beneficial to business, but in life in general.

Feel free to post your suggestions.

Anything by Shackleton. The Stoics- Meditations by Marcus Aurelius, various writings by Seneca

But books are almost worthless for becoming mentally tough.

@Bouncing Soul,

You posted this suggestion before I did. I haven't read a book on him but have read articles. Gat damn - this guy and his crew were mentally tough!

But books are almost worthless for becoming mentally tough.

True that! Homelessness and couch surfing - and all the attendant snickering and snide comments made about your situation by people you thought were friends - will tighten up your mental game with the quickness if you choose to allow it.

Maximum Achievement by Brian Tracey is a great read thus far. I just started it and its a bit out there (so am I) but I can compare it to Think and Grow Rich in many ways.

Also, As a Man Thinketh is a quick read. You can probably get it on the Kindle for .99 cents and start and read it within a half hour...

Good journey,
Freed

Read some Brene Brown's books, being vulnerable and being weak is 2 very different things in life, you can't experience mental toughness without one of them.

Was going to post this too. Can be a truly life-changing book.

It teaches you how to adopt the stoic mindset used by the ancient Roman and Greek philosophers. The author got his inspiration from the book 'Meditations' by Marcus Aurelius (ancient Roman emperor) which you may have heard of.

Here's a video to give you an idea of what it's about, but of course you need to read the book to get the full message:

It's funny that my business helped me to do this.
Specifically cold calling which is a big part of my biz model now.

Even as an extrovert I was terrified of getting on the phone/voip I would make one call
then stare at the phone for a half hour...

Against my better judgement I was foolish and bought into a course
that promised all kind if things in a niche I wasn't very knowledgeable about.

I was excited and fought through the rejections, rude people, hang ups
until one guy said hold up here is how it really works and that people DON'T operate like that
in the market.

Ended up being pissed for a day but I realized that my fear for cold calling
had disappeared all I was doing was gauging interest and maybe have a conversation.

When I reflected on the process I realized that it carried over to many aspects
in my life risks, women , decisions etc...

Maybe what I developed was apathy...but I do feel mentally tougher.

Books about mental toughness will only bring you so far. Yes, the change is all in your head and reading is a mental activity; but reading it won't make you tougher. Find a challenge. Find a physical or proverbial mountain to climb. Hike a difficult trail. Get into the ring and trade punches with a worthy fighter. Get cold, dirty and bloody; then turn your eye to the problems that look intimidating now and say "I got this...."

The Master Mind - by William Walker Atkinson

Old but brilliant book that teaches you:
- How to change from slave-mind to master-(over your)-mind
- How to build up desire to that drives you into the direction of your goals

The Obstacle Is The Way

Interesting.

Written by Ryan Holiday, Robert Greene's protoge.

I'd also recommend 50th Law, 48 Laws of Power, Art of Seduction, Mastery, 33 Strategies of War.

Also, every book written by Dr. HAHA Lung.

Also the book "Control Theory."

Also Art of War, by Sun-Tzu.

Also all of Ayn Rand's non-fiction.

Also Friedrich Nietzsche's words on Power and Will and the flight of human spirit and potential.

I almost jumped in and dropped some books for you...

But the reality is that mental toughness cannot be fully grasped by reading a book. Reading can only go so far.

It's the doing. It's the mistakes. It's the failures. It's the experiences. It's all of them combined that fully turn you into something thats beyond average.

You cannot expect to read a book and suddenly become as tough as a SEAL Team 6 member.

LOL, classic Robert Greene, quoting and building from the ancients.

Started on "Thick Face, Black Heart" last night. It's been mentioned several times on the forum and seems like a winner so far.

I'm currently reading The Power of Habits by Charles Duhigg. I'm one 3rd of my way through it and so far I'm really enjoying it. The things he's writing about might all seem like common sense to most people, but it's good to read and think about it once in a while to reflect on your habits, either good or bad.

Truly a FANTASTIC book. If you want to really kick it into high gear with habits/willpower read; "Mini Habits" and "The Willpower Instinct".

"Total Recall" by Arnold Schwarzenegger. Not only about mental toughness but passion and drive. Also, whenever you hear stories about people going through all kinds of stuff to get to the United States, it makes you appreciate being born here.

This is just me, but I don't think mental toughness is something you learn by reading books. You either have the will to make it through whatever you're facing, or you don't.

Often people don't realize how tough they are until their back is against the wall.

It's up to you to decide that you're going to make it through whatever you have to.
