Yo guys,

Just wondering if there are any (semi) marketing professionals who are willing to share their knowledge on how to get started with marketing and whom to learn from.

Are people like Tai and Gary V good examples to listen to for marketing advice?

Are there any books available worthwile to read, or is this a "trial and error" thing?

Thanks for your time amigo ;)

hmm, so many books I learned from ( and from personal experience ).

I'm gonna list some, but these are in no particular order..

  1. The 22 Immutable Laws of Marketing
  2. Cashvertising
  3. Dotcom Secrets
  4. Blue Ocean Strategy
  5. Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion
  6. Predictably Irrational
  7. Hooked: How to Build Habit-Forming Products
  8. All Marketers are Liars
  9. Contagious: Why Things Catch On
  10. Crossing the Chasm

Hey, I love this post! Are you looking for more on the consumer psychology or are you looking for more practical digital content?

Here are the books I've found to be super-practical and have used myself to learn marketing:

1. Jab Jab Jab Right Hook by Gary Vaynerchuk
Overview: Provide value first, don't try to close anyone on the first transaction. Provide so much value upfront that people feel guilty of not buying your product/service.

2. Never Eat Alone by Keith Ferrazzi
Overview: Whatever you do in business, it is always about people. A company is made up of people. If you are in b2b space, people don't buy from your company, they buy from you.
There is this great quote by Grant Cardone "Your network is your net-worth".

It's not about what you know, but who you know.

This book will teach you how to create lasting relationships with people in your industry or any relationship in general. (Highly Recommended)

3. Kick-a$$ Copywriting Secrets of a Marketing Rebel: Home Study Course

Overview: This is a copywriting book that has changed my view of how I approach marketing.
I believe if you want to be a marketer, you should learn copywriting because it will teach you all the mindsets that are required to make your consumer buy the product.

I read this way back and most of the content isn't relevant anymore (for example direct mail sales letter and going to library for learning more about the industry).

4. The Viral Bible by James Shamsi

Overview: Not many people might have heard of James Shamsi, but those who do know him for his crazy growth hacking stunts.

- He uploaded his CV on tinder to land a job.
- He growth hacked a page from 0 to 1.6 million likes in 9 months.

His philosophy is be lazy and cheap.
Why pay for advertising, when you can find creative ways of getting picked up by major publications on the web?

If you are doing things the way everybody else around you are doing, then be prepared to get the same results they are getting.

Be unique and do something out of the box.
Don't be like everyone else.

I'll second a couple from above:

Jab Jab Jab Right Hook
DotComSecrets (he's done a follow up - Expert Secrets too which is more niche but still interesting)

Before adding one:

Made To Stick
- by Chip and Dan Heath

It's a solid analysis of the reasons some ideas for marketing/telling a story/getting an idea to go mainstream actually work and why others fall completely flat. Definitely a win if you have an amazing idea you're struggling to actually explain to your target market/convert easily.
