Stumbled upon this on Reddit of all places (yes, I know) - it's a GREAT read.

I especially liked the part where he was able to break into an extremely competitive space on Adwords by bidding on Competitor's names and using a comparison landing page to generate sales on his competitors terms. Brilliant Strategy.

Enjoy:

(Note, I didn't read the comments, comments on Reddit are generally a waste of time)

We let our better-funded competitors spend the money to get people to perform a search...then all we needed to do is convince those people that our bed is better. Using customized landing pages for each ad resulted in far more conversions than homepage URL ads.

Really clever strategy, as you say. Good read :)

Good stuff. I'm actually in the process of doing something similar with bidding on competitors terms via PPC for a client of mine.

@JasonR Thanks for making this thread. I just learned something very useful to implement in my advertising.

I had no idea about bidding on your own name and even bidding on your competitors name. I just ran some names through the keyword planner and altogether they generate about 170,000 monthly searches. And, guess what? Competition is LOW and no one is bidding on those names. Wow. Time to test those searches it with some ads.

Thanks @Andy Black

A good read for sure.

Their site still looks a bit rough around the edges and I didn't see any kind of a sales funnel.

I also got a stupidly immature smile when I read this on their comparison page.

"Yes, 2 inches does make a difference."
