Hey Guys,

I am a 20 yo Student based in Germany who wants to build a Business and escape the Slowlane and the majority ..

I still live with my mom, and I am at the moment studying, but I don't really want to work after I graduated in that Niche that I am studying so it's just useless to finish it.

My biggest problem is that my Mom is doing everything for me, and I am just lost because of that always when I tell her that I won't work in a basic Job after I graduated or that I just don't want to finish and graduate at all she just tells me that she is so depressed because of me.. and why I am saying all of that, why can't I just be normal like an average person ... why did she deserve to be treated like that ....

My Plan is just to learn a Skill that can make a living of itself and start building a Business and just free myself from my Family because I just feel trapped.

I am read to take any step that brings me a bit further and that helps me to free myself out the rat race

Any Advice what I should learn? I am ready to learn anything that is good and profitable in 2020 + in the next 5 or 10 years.

Before you try and find a skill/tactic...

#1 - If you are going to do anything for 5 or 10 years figure out who you are... There is a lot of mental growth you will have in the next 5 - 10 years. I've recommended this here already, but take a Meyers Briggs test. There are free tests if you google it. This will help point you to what you will be naturally inclined to do. (Thus help you remain disciplined)

#2 - Have reasons over goals... Whats your real why? Look through a framework of regret minimization. Project yourself to 80 and look back over your life. What you would regret not doing etc.

#3 - Both Fastlane and Unscripted cover how you should be thinking about this. But to sum it up look for things you can have $0 marginal replicatable costs when solving problems or collecting rents.

#4 Leverage the situation to get a business off the ground while you are still at home with little to no bills. Be super strict on your expenses in your business for anything without an ROI.

#5 - Leverage your teachers network while you are in school. Don't be afraid to help someone else get rich first, and with real commitment you may end up with a little equity out of the deal.

#6 - Be grateful for your mom, and help her out. Someday she won't be around and you will remember how awesome she was to you. Again think about when you are 80 and what you might wish you would have done for her.

You have an awesome opportunity being here so young, if you can really grasp the power of this forum. I have been a part of another group of similar caliber. That group however I had to drop 10k to just be apart of, but it changed my life in a big way.

Thank you every much for your advice I will do the test and keep everything in mind.

My real why is that I feel trapped in this world and I can't imagine finding happiness working 5 for 2. I get sick and feel depressed thinking of working 50+ years for someone else with no savings, no money after retirement. I just want to be free as soon as possible and start to *live*! I don't want people be sitting in my back and tell me how to do everything and what to do. I just want to take my life in my hands even if I fail 10 years or 20.

If you take action you never fail... You either win or you learn. If you do the right thing long enough, you will eventually run out of unluck.

I would suggest learning sales. If you can sell, a lot of companies will pay you good money, but more importantly, you will develop the needed skills that you'll use if you start a business. No matter what type of business you start, you'll get your income through sales. If you can't get sales, your business is dead. So it's a win-win skill to develop.

Yep, Bekit is 100% right, sales is the highest paid skill in the world... just a little addition to think about is copywriting (salesmanship in print.) This will give you leverage on time.

As a freelance copywriter, I agree that copywriting is salesmanship in print and that it gives you leverage on time.

However, I do not think I would be an effective copywriter today if it were not for the fact that I was first very well trained in sales and spent two years selling a SaaS product over the phone.

In sales, you have to be able to do all the selling in real time, with a person who will respond in real time. So you have to be nimble, flexible, personable, and dead set on getting a sale with a person who seems determined to evade buying today.

You get instant feedback on what works and what doesn't work. So you can pivot and adjust your approach for the next person.

Plus, even if you dedicate yourself to copywriting and get really good, you're still going to need to know how to sell in order to get any clients.

I am coming from it as a skill to use for yourself in business not really as a freelancer.

I agree with you there is a lot of rich insights you get from dealing with people one on one. Both in my opinion are only as powerful as the positioning.

When you run metrics on landing pages you get instant metrics as well, and you can run way higher #'s. Especially on 100% self serve models.

I use copywriting to gain authority for my sales team. My marketing does the heavy lifting.

@MakeMeRich ...

I learned a lot of stuff about copy from Clayton Makepeace, Joseph Sugarman, Eugene Schwartz, Perry Marshall, and Todd Brown.

Some books to look into "The Adweek Copywriting Handbook", "Words that sell", "Breakthrough Advertising(This one is expensive as I have a hard copy, but you can find online pdfs for it now") There is a few more gems out there on copy as well.

There is threads on here with a lot more resources as well.

Courses can get expensive... Be resourceful here and you can find information without using up all your resources.

Some things to look at are peoples funnels that are converting. Follow ads to the landing pages and look at the structure. Its all about gaining trust, authority, and a reason to take action now. Look into cognitive biases as well to start you understand the psychology behind it. (Look at the template of it...Do not copy it)

Here is a solid post GOLD! - Lex DeVille's: 15 Days to Freedom - Make Money Copywriting in 15 Days or Less

You can also listen to sales webinars, if they have been proven by running them for a while. The webinar slides themselves are the structure of the copy... listen to the tonality ect in those.

Get a sales job, get good fast, and then get a better sales job (optional but a good way to get to 150k+ in a couple years). Usually the only places that'll take anyone is a car lot or something similar. Do a good job and then make a connection and land yourself a real sales position.

Save your money, hustle and forget about being social for a while, learn another skill in the evenings, and then start a business.

I started working at a car lot when I was 20, worked for 1 year, started my business and now I have employees that do 97% of the work and I'm 23 now. In the evenings of working at that car lot I was learning how to build websites and how to run digital advertising. That helped me immensely when I needed to get customers for my business when starting. The sales position was valuable for that as well.

In between work and learning another skill, your free time should be spent in the gym. The body and mind are inseparable.

The main things I notice with all real entrepreneurs that I actually meet is that they have the following qualities (almost without exception)

1. An ability to sell their ideas and be charismatic
2. A healthy focus on physical fitness
3. An above average sex life
4. Not apologizing for having ambition and massive goals
5. Few loser friends
6. They have spent time to learn human psychology as it relates to real life (not a textbook or class)
7. An (often unspoken) understanding that 99% of people are absolute sheep.

1. The ability to get shit done/dicsipline first. You can be the best at everything but if you dont do anything you will accomplish nothing.

2. Negotiation skills. Best way to learn this would probably be a sales job.
Example, I went rookie of the year for 2 sales companies whan I was younger before I decided to join the army. Hated both jobs but it was the only thing avaliable for me. Thought I wasted 18 month doing this.
Now when I opend my first business, I used the haggling/negotiating skills to raise 50k in capital from scratch and save 80k in good deals. Also get a nice suit and get it tailord, you are young so get a charcoal one (no black suits!). It will increase speech +10.
Anyway @Johnny boy is spot on.

I guess you have a computer and an internet connection?

Have a look on Fiverr and Upwork at what services people are providing? Can you do any already. Also see if there’s short courses on YouTube, or Udemy for $10. You don’t have to take any, but it’s good to know you can if you need to. Pick something you can learn and provide while at home?

Find someone in your personal network who needs help. Help them, maybe even for free. Use the case study to help someone else. Figure out how to get consistent sales. Then figure out how to scale.

Listen to:

In the meantime, can you get a part-time job and help out at home? Your mum will then also see you’re prepared to help out and do whatever it takes.

I understand you hate the idea of working 9-5 and doing the standard slowlane, but if you want to achieve financial freedom, you need to have the patience to be willing to work hard for years on end at sometimes shitty positions.

Assume you try and master Sales as many are suggesting (Code or Copy or etc.. also works):

Year 1-2: A basic low-end SDR/BDR position calling 200 people a day to set up meetings
Year 3-5: Fully cycle or closer position turning the BDR meetings into deals for small/medium clients
Year 5-8: Senior Sales with strategic clients & Multinational clients

After 5-8 years of intensive work you can develop mastery in a skill which will enable you to leverage it into a business. If you want it to go faster, work harder.

You can replace this with any other skill and you will find a similar path. Or you can work a basic 9-5 & work on a side e-commerce business in the evenings/weekend, but it will still take years of consistent effort.

Off course, if you want the direct hack to a beach lifestyle in 12 months with fake models, I've got a course for 999$ to sell you...

All parents are like that, when I was your age, they were telling me the same things, and I was saying exactly what you're saying.

You do your thing, and your mother does her thing. If she chooses to be depressed, that is her choice. Or she could choose to try and help you if she cares about you. She too has a choice, and you can't make it for her or be responsible for it. If she chooses to be depressed, then so be it.

Do you want to learn a skill that will ensure that you can always be independent and not need to be employed? If so, forget sales. Learn coding. You'll be learning sales as you try to sell your services. Learning sales, by the way, is kind of bullshit unless you want to become a salesman. Does anyone here know any business owner who sells like a salesman? Because I certainly don't. Not when the business owner can play with his offers, can offer any guarantee he wants, can create any packages he wants, can present the offers any way he wants... why would he bother with "Oh, what questions should I ask this guy?" or "How do I build and use a CRM for my pipeline?"etc.

If the technical aspects are not your forte, then learn copywriting or direct response marketing (which is what I did, even though my technical skills are fantastic, and I can code better than some of the developers whom I've hired). Direct response will teach you about becoming customer obsessed - obsessed to discover what the customer already wants to buy, and then providing it to him. Direct response teaches you all about this research.

OR

Do you want to own a business? If you want to own a business, learn to be the boss. Don't make the mistake I made, to learn a trade first, and then go build a business around it. F*ck that. Go straight to being the boss. Go straight to thinking like the boss. To solving problems with people, not with your skills. When the boss has a problem, he doesn't solve it himself. He goes to find the motherfcker who can solve it for him.

The boss doesn't ask "How can I solve this problem?".

He asks...

"Who can I find to solve this problem for me?"

That's the boss mindset.

After 5-8 years of intensive work you can develop mastery in a skill which will enable you to leverage it into a business.
Are you kidding me? Mark Zuckerberg was a billionaire by age 23 and you're asking this guy to spend 5-8 years to learn a skill and only THEN leverage it into a business? :wideyed: Yeah, he should do that if he wants to find himself 30 years old, great at a skill, and without a business.

There's a very troubling tendency on this forum to give people "safe" advice that will lead them nowhere and will at best turn them into obedient, afraid employees. That's not a way to become a successful entrepreneur.

I mentioned this in my other thread:

I’ll expand on this.

Why not create covers for Facebook pages for $30? Get some people to say yes, then use something like Canva to figure it out, or get someone off Fiverr to do it.

Why Facebook pages? It typically means they’re not just a consumer.

Start with something as simple that. Start this weekend. Make a few sales this coming week and earn an extra $100 you wouldn’t have had while you’re “learning a skill”.

My point is: Don’t have a goal to learn a skill. Just get started helping people and getting paid. This week.

Studying takes about 2 months a year pushing a bit harder and maybe 20 hours working a week and 3-4 months free.
To get your title, whats more important in Germany than in ozher countries.

Now, in the same way you have 3-4 months and 50 hours a week time for learning skills at/and building a business.

So much time.

So make your mom happy with your diploma
and make yourself happy with a business!

In studies I had most free time in my life. Free for living and building businesses.

So don t do that either or game, as long as you haven’t worked hard on the business part!

Btw : you read the books?

There's a very troubling tendency on this forum to give people "safe" advice that will lead them nowhere and will at best turn them into obedient, afraid employees. That's not a way to become a successful entrepreneur.

I mentioned this in my other thread:

I'm not sure quite how my post was interpreted as "running away to the slowlane"...

@MakeMeRich is clearly feeling a bit lost in life, the prospect of doing just doing a boring basic job is depressing (which it should be), the time spend in uni seems like a waste and he's looking to escape to the Fastlane.

The point I was trying to make is that acquiring high value skills, building a business and being successful pretty much always requires multiple years of hard consistent work building those skills and the business before you reap any of the benefits. Which in turn requires patience and the willingness to a lot of shitty work.

The idea that getting a job which can help you build those skills or acquire capital to fund your business will somehow poison you and turn you into a scared sheep is absurd.

In his situation, the most important action is to take to figure out for himself what disposition he has (Brigg/Myer and such.), what avenues and skills/business would fit him the best (which can Copy/Code/Sales/Marketing/etc...) and develop a long & short term plan to execute upon.

Is it possible this mean going freelance & working through Upwork as a first stage? Sure
It is possible this mean learning an online course and selling a service online? Sure
Is it possible this mean getting a job for X amount to time to learn the required skills and then launch a business? Sure
Is it possible this mean working at McDonalds while he spends every ounce of energy to build his side-hustle into a fully fledged business? Sure
It is ..... etc.. etc..

There are many ways to skin a cat and as long you keep the long term vision fixed front & center, I personally believe you should be willing to do anything (legally) as long as it brings you closer to your goal and financial freedom.

P.S. @Black_Dragon43

There are many extremely successful business people who created their wealth solely based on their Sales skills. Marc Cuban or Kevin O' Leary for example. In my personal circle I know multiple people who, with just their sales skills, started & are running extremely successful businesses. It is a pivotal skill for any entrepreneur and you can definitely go Fastlane based on it.

Any Advice what I should learn? I am ready to learn anything that is good and profitable in 2020 + in the next 5 or 10 years.
Learn skill that has high barrier to entry (also told by MJ in fastlane ). While everyone should learn sales and marketing at this day and age. Its has low barrier to entry.
Example of high barrier to entry would be learning and building a SAAS business.

Hey @MakeMeRich, I commend you for knowing that you don't want to work for da man!!

Your mom just wants to see her son succeed and if school doesn't excite you, be honest with yourself, be honest with her and tell your mom you prefer to build a business, however, you need a plan and most importantly, to catapult your learning, "get a mentor" who is doing what you want to do and learn from them

I've browsed some of the advice you received and totally agree that 'sales & marketing' will prepare you as an entrepreneur - get good at this

Don't focus on EVERYTHING, pick one area and become a good student, learn, practice, find a job where you can learn and hopefully be mentored and everyday, cultivate your mindset

Your mind will dictate future!!

Best of luck my dear chap :fistbump: :smile2: :fistbump:

I'm more than a little bit put off by the name you've chosen. No one is going to "make" you anything. You are going to create your life from the way you see it, and by your hard work, coupled with your education, that you put into it. Your life belongs to you and so do your results.

Why aren't you working while you are still in school? You could be building a business as a side gig, practicing your business skills, and saving your money for when you know better what you want to do. You could tutor other students -- mow lawns -- clean swimming pools -- working for a business that interests you -- building web sites -- volunteer your time at a charity... Do something. Losers sit around on their piety pots, doing nothing, while they throw ashes on their heads. You don't sound like a loser -- just a late bloomer who is having trouble getting started.

(Yes, you are still young, but some of us went to work when we were a lot younger than you are -- without your advantages and parental support. Say thank you, Mom.)

Ask yourself, how do you know what you want to do if you have done nothing in that field? Looking at something from the outside is sure different from standing neck-deep in the trenches. Here's an example: Owning a restaurant sounds really sexy until you realize that you must flip the hamburgers when your line cook doesn't show up. And who is going to clean the toilets and scrub away the grease under the grill hood? UG! Very sexy work!

Oh, and a footnote here -- people hate to do what they aren't good at doing. So when you first start and you fumble around, know that you are going to HATE that activity. You only get good at doing anything IF you put in hours and hours of mindful practice to get better at it. Then you can grow to love it.

In my mind "selling" is where it's at in the skill set game. Learn your "people" skills.

This week.
Thank you Mr. Andy,

Your comments always enlighten me, for my case, I start immediately to look for friends/colleagues who need to learn English. sometimes in the past, I refused them because I thought making these 20$/2 hours by teaching not worth my time and energy. Man, now I realize that it was wrong, despite graduating from an university with an engineering degree, all valuable skills I gain from it are basic English and a degree, I can not even get a job in the relevant field (5 academic years wasted)due to the high entry barrier (relationships, greasing money...). Anyway, I just got 2 friends who agreed the teaching deal while I'm typing this. Thank you Andy.

You didn't waste your time going to school. You just have another challenge to face. Your job now is to widen your circle of contacts through using your range of skills. You aren't wasting your time teaching English. You are making another group of contacts that will lead to doing what you want to do.

Wait, hang on. People are giving good advice here but forget that you live in Germany. You know things are different here. Sales is different here.

Lets be real on "sales" in Germany. You are 20, nobody will take you seriously. Too many legal pullbacks, too many stipulations. Its illegal to do B2C cold call, cold email. Even cold B2B is frowned up on. Door to door is non existent. Germans dont spend as they do in the US. Trust is more important. Sales is building relationships with clients. In B2B, Germans are all about relationships.

On the other hand:

Developers are extremely well paid in our country. They are also in incredible high demand. Both employment and freelance work pays good money. Almost all startups look for developers (looking at that equity now) and many fresh startups will take a young CTO.

It also provides you the freedom, flexibility and security down the line. This is a skill that will continue to be in high demand in 10 or more years. It provides many opportunities to escape the slowlane. Either your own startup that starts on the side or getting into a promising team.

Exactly it’s a bit difficult to do Cold calls in Germany. I already did cold calls for an business idea I had but most Germans are not trusting you over a cellphone call and don’t want to cooperate with someone they don‘t know.
Thanks for your advice about Developing :)
