How long was the climb? I want to do this but my flight doesn’t get in until 4:30pm on Thursday and sunset is at 6:05pm.

I need to be outside to process stuff.. it might actually be a great use of my time to schedule this Sunday morning.. hm.
I am a local to Scottsdale and if you are in pretty good shape it will take 45minutes to 75 minutes up depending on your fitness and what side you climb. Echo canyon is 1.1 miles but steeper and Cholla is 1.8 miles but flatter most of the way instead of straight up.

I live locally and would love to meet up with some (or all) of you guys anytime! Camelback is a lot of fun to hike and the weather should be perfect. There are also some nice hikes in North Scottsdale that aren't quite as demanding.

thank you for this! I ended up googling it and got conflicting reports because of course they don’t know how in shape or out of shape I am. I look forward to checking it out.. that is if I’m not too busy in the spa.

Flying in Thursday at 1:35 PM Thursday and leaving for 11AM Flight Sunday which could probably get pushed back to 7PM if anyone has something fun going on in those short times. I don't really know anyone, but that never stops me.

The difference between the 2 trails is fairly significant. I will only do Echo Canyon. The setting is much more beautiful. You are correct that it is easier on the Cholla side. But there are still rocks to climb at the top.

I have decided that there is only so much time to do events outside of the summit and must choose carefully.

I plan on doing an easy off-road cruise/hike combo on Thursday. The destination is still being determined.

On Sunday, I would like to either e-bike or mountain bike south on the canal from Old Town. The destination will either be Papago mountain or Tempe Town Lake. Even though it goes through the middle of the city, it is serene and beautiful. After the initial mile or so, there are not many roads to cross. It is an interesting jaunt that takes you away from the noise and traffic.

Although I have talked about Camelback, I am going to skip it this time. I used to live in Arcadia right at the base of the mountain and have done it many times. A suggestion for those that plan on doing this is to avoid weekends. Way too busy and crowded. It will be difficult to even find a place to park. Not trying to discourage anyone from this hike, it is well worth it!

I will post more information before the event for those that want to participate. My vehicle is full for the off-roading. That may change but currently 3 members of my family are coming along. I am hoping that they will do things with other people besides me but have to save their spots just in case. :)

Wish I had a rig to come off roading! That should be awesome

@SteveO are there any hidden gems near the casino where ppl could take a good 1-3 mile walk/hike without the crowds? I need nature to function well. I want to at least see the sky in Phoenix and get away from the talking for a little bit, possibly before 7am or after 7pm. But I have NO desire to fight for parking among a bunch of tourist traps.

Lots of places but not right next to the casino. Scottsdale has a greenbelt path that goes for miles.

I would like to suggest that anything you do should involve people you want to talk to. The weekend will pass very quickly.

I arrive 11.30am Thursday and leave 720pm Sunday. I wish I was staying longer after seeing how much there is to do, maybe next year.

I am keen on a short hike and the bike ride mentioned above sounds good but I am coming from Australia so I’m not sure how I’m going to feel after all the flying and time zones.

I’d also like to try some of the huge American fast food while I’m there, just throwing that out there

and maybe shoot some guns, I’m sure there’s somewhere you can do that, does anyone know?

I’m looking forward to meeting everyone, I’ll make a bit of an intro/progress thread on the forum before the event when I get some time so people know who I am :)

Is there an ideal way to bring water? Camelback or something?
Most of what we are talking about won't require a Camelback water pack. Great if you already have one. A light backpack or waist band carrier will be fine.

As @SteveO said, nothing really close to TSR but McDowell has some great trails and isn't too far from TSR. One of the least hiked is Ringtail Trail which intersects with Lost Dog and Sunrise Peak Trails. However, those trails can get busy. The busiest trail at McDowell is Gateway Trail.

EDIT TO ADD: Ringtail is mostly flat with minor elevation changes. Our favorite way to hike Ringtail is to hike it to the Sunrise Peak intersection, then take Sunrise up about 2 miles (you'll gain a lot of elevation) or so and turn around. If you want more elevation I'd suggest this route. If feeling adventurous take Sunrise all the way to the peak. Absolutely incredible views from there.

As @biophase suggested, we should take the partial drive up to the road closure. Then take a medium effort trail hike in the Superstitions. I've done a couple of hikes there but @AllenCrawley could probably guide us better on this.

The Apache Trail road is a little rough but not too bad. Any passenger vehicle could make it on the section we will be driving. My jeep is already full. Not sure how much room that biophase has for passengers but I'm suspecting that we will need a couple more vehicles.
I'm not aware of any hike in the Superstitions that's not amazing, lol. It's my all-time favorite area to hike. Unfortunately, the Apache Trail road is closed at Tortilla Flats (a very small "town" of about 3 shops and a restaurant) but we can park there and find a trail to hike. @SteveO is right on when he said after that point is the most spectacular views of the Superstitions.

Flying in from the UK and arriving on the 6th, flying out on the 11th. I'm stoked! I really want to get some hiking in. Camelback mountain is a definite one for me, and I'm thinking of renting a car to do a trip to the Grand Canyon. If anyone else is game get in touch!

Yes, a number of times. @MTF hiked it barefoot. Seemed like every female that went past us either tried to engage in conversation or watched him hike on by. :) It is all rock!

Challenging but doable by most people.

* Not sure what the laws are like in Arizona but coming from Ireland I really would love to go to a firing range or just shoot guns in general. We don't get the opportunity to do that here.

and maybe shoot some guns, I’m sure there’s somewhere you can do that, does anyone know?

Am totally up for shooting guns. Am actually a member of a gun club here in the UK, (in Central London - who'd believe it!) but yes, our gun laws are strict, & I've never yet shot a pistol or revolver. Up. For. This. Can we - as three foreign tourists - wander up to a range & do this - anyone from AZ/US know?

that is if I’m not too busy in the spa.

Also up for getting a spa group together. I mean, I could hike, but I'd actually really worry about slowing people down, so obviously I must instead engage in the sort of lying around I'm entirely competent in. But seriously though - spa anyone?

Afterwards I drive back to Santa Monica and LA.

Cool. I fly back to Europe on the 16th from LAX. Will be in Phoenix at least till the 11th and I'm considering going to the LA area for a few days before I fly back

Ooh - I'll be in LA either side of Scottsdale too! I have friends there. Arrive in LA on 3rd, Scottsdale on the 5th, LA on the 10th, & leave on the 12th!

Two of us from the UK! Hurrah!

Yes, you can so long as you're older than 21 with passport should work.

I'd be down for this. A group of us went last year. Wonder if there are any outdoor ranges that do rentals around.

Sweet! I know there's a good few of us on the forum, but for some reason I didn't get the impression from the other thread that there were that many of us going. Awesome!

Are you flying from LA to Scottsdale on the 5th?

No, I'm... getting the greyhound :eyes:  I actually quite enjoyed getting the greyhound from Vegas to LA last year - a good chunk of quiet, restful time in quite a hectic trip, I get to see a bit of the country, & can't argue with the price, but yes, I am basically allowing the whole day for travel & then chilling before the madness starts!

Scottsdale gun club will be the closest shooting range to Talking Stick. It's indoor and they have alot of variety to rent.

I don't know of any outdoor range that rents guns here. The closest outdoor range is Ben Avery, but they do not rent guns or sell ammo.
