Well me personally I am just uploading to YouTube for practice, as I am producing video courses and cooking classes right now. so I'm just using it to improve my skills and get in the habit of producing more, and refining my process for the courses I create.

YouTube channel hasn't bought me in anything but that isn't my goal for putting content up on the platform, I honestly don't care if I get many views.

Could my time be better spend on better activities that produce higher revenue? I would say undoubtedly that's probably the case, so while I have been doing this, I have been learning more about the world of importing by reading some books by Walter hay, (your threads) and seeing what products are out there where a potential opportunity may lie.

For those of you with Youtube channels: WHY?

Why video?
  • Not many people are doing video compared to written content.
  • Even less are doing video well.
  • Video forces you to get over yourself.
  • Do a good video first and audio and written content can be extracted from it.
  • Video can be more engaging to consume because more of our senses are used.
  • Video is getting easier to consume due to improving technology and faster broadband.
  • If you’re selling a video course then it makes sense to use video content to market and sell it.
  • If people are to know, like, and trust you then they’ll do it much quicker if they can see you and hear you talk.
  • YouTube videos can rank on Google.
  • A YouTube video on a written post can help that page rank on Google.
  • It feels a bit like where Superman’s dad records all his life lessons so his son can view them when the time is right. I’ve three sons (7, 9, 11). One day they might go through the videos I create and get some value from them. Video messages are quite a way to create a legacy.

Why YouTube?
  • YouTube is the second biggest search engine in the world.
  • YouTube has a similar number of active users as Facebook.
  • People spend a similar amount of time per day on YouTube as Facebook.
  • More and more people are watching video on YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, etc - instead of watching TV.
  • People go to YouTube to watch videos. They don’t go to Facebook to watch videos. On Facebook video sound is off by default because there’d be uproar otherwise. On YouTube sound defaults to OFF on my mobile, but defaults to ON on my desktop. A sign that people are on YouTube to consume videos (which seems a Duh statement but I’m just pointing out that people don’t go to Facebook primarily to watch videos).
  • Videos on Facebook fall off the feed and disappear. Videos on YouTube can stay bringing in views and subscribers (and helping people!) for years to come.
  • Many people go to YouTube to learn how to do something. Many of those people could be, or could soon be, in the market for a paid course on that subject.
  • YouTube ads can boost a video and help it rank organically.
  • YouTube Ads are created in the Google Ads interface - good if you already know Google Ads.
  • There’s lots of businesses that want help growing their YouTube channel, and are prepared to pay for it.
  • Video is expensive. Businesses looking to get DFY services are already in the mindset that it won’t be cheap.
  • I had a play on Instagram and didn’t like it, I’m still playing on Facebook and am undecided, but find myself fascinated by YouTube.

Whenever I click on someone's channel, there's typically a couple thousand views per video or less. Is that really worth your time?
I’m delighted when *one* person replies saying something I pointed them to helped them. I consider that worth my time.

If I “can” it and it helps more people over the years then that’s even better.

By capturing and publishing that advice, I can point people towards it in future and not repeat myself. This saves me a lot of time, and increases the number of people I can help.

If a couple of thousand views equates to helping a couple of thousand people then that is a-m-a-z-i-n-g.

Is the effort you put into maintaining your channel worth more than if you did other forms of marketing and sales?

I can’t NOT produce content. I do it daily, mostly answering questions. I may as well do it in such a way that it’s accessible and available to more people, and where the audio and written version can be simply extracted from it.

Producing content and answering questions IS my number one form of marketing and sales.

And before everyone gets all defensive, answer this: How much money has your channel brought in for YOU to date, and what's that come out to per hour of effort that you spent (learning how to publish, editing, creating the content, etc.)

I don’t know. My current Youtube channel is just a store to house content that I link to in TFLF threads. The new channel will be more focused and with the intention of getting found and known by people outside the forum.

I’ve sold my course nearly 100 times purely by releasing it into the forum. Even a few people outside the forum bought it due to word of mouth referrals.

It was bringing in about $1k/mth revenue for the first 18 months (it’s dropped off a bit since then). I know people making $1k/day revenue from selling a similarly priced course. I’m now curious what would happen if I intentionally sold my course, outside the forum.

I'm sure it could be effective, but I believe for the vast majority of people it's a waste of time - time that could be better allocated into higher revenue producing activities.

Maybe so. Although I’m not so interested in the common result.

It’s an interesting hobby to have though, and it forces us to get better at creating content, presenting, and getting over ourselves. My hat is off to anyone having a go at creating a YouTube channel.

It’s damn uncomfortable doing video, so being the contrarian I’m attracted to it even just because of that.

I remember Andrew once writing somewhere in the forum:

“What’s the best that can happen?”

I like your bottom-line perspective, and it's a good questionFor YouTube, it's a long-term strategy to create a brand & have an established page on a platform that more and more people are using, as opposed to other educational & entertaining platforms. Thus, building a high-fidelity rapport with customers (so to work, it depends on the business model & the biz's relationship w it's customers)

I've got me a YouTube coach, and I'm in a small group learning to grow our YouTube channels.

I'll not link to the new channel for the moment because I want to see if I can grow it from scratch.

Anyway... I just created a quick video where I'm practicing doing talking head videos by, err, giving tips on creating talking head videos. It's on my normal channel, not the new one I'll create.

View: https://youtu.be/ixkvYao2zuk

Here’s the tripod selfie stick I used. It’s super cheap, portable, and simple.

It's a group of students for that coach. It's not very active because we're all (supposed to be) creating our videos at the moment. I've fallen behind and need to catch up.

We have this thread and Fox's where we could interact and help each other?

Saving this from @lowtek

+1 on the YouTube enigma machine.

My earliest videos have average view duration around 2 - 3 minutes, and click through rates of 3 - 6%. This is due in large part to having shorter videos and lackluster thumbnails.

More recent videos have average view duration 4 - 6 minutes, about double, with comparable click through rates (I still suck at thumbnails).

YouTube STILL pushes the older videos. They are often among my top 5 of the last 48 hours, despite being significantly worse than newer stuff. The majority of my top 10 are the new stuff, so I'm growing much faster than in the beginning, but it just highlights my confusion around the algorithm.

Our channels are of comparable size (I just hit 3500 subs today), so perhaps some of these tips will be of use to you:

Series playlists: Sticking stuff in a playlist is a good idea, but did you know you can make something called a series playlist? This kind of forces the next video to be shown in the sidebar (as long as people click on it and don't bounce from your content) and is a good way to keep people engaged. Regular playlists may or may not show the next video in your series, or they may show a totally separate video in the sidebar.

You focused intros: I saw a video a while back that claimed they had data that showed that videos that say "you" in the intro get around 30% more clicks than those that don't. I implemented this, and while I don't have the data, I can anecdotally say that it is a game changer. This change was correlated with my significant rise in average view duration (I've gone from 3:05 to 4:40 over the last several months, with spikes into the high 5 and low 6 minute ranges).

I start most videos with "<Greeting> In this video you will learn how to do X. You don't need to know how to do A or B or C, you just have to follow along". This let's me stick in 3 "yous" in the first 10 seconds and seems to be a winning strategy for me.

This is congruent with the overall message of your proposal writing framework, so I think it would be a great fit for your channel, or at least, something to experiment with.

Subscriber watermark: I put a little watermark in the bottom right of the video that people can use to subscribe. I have zero data on how much effect this has, but it hasn't seem to hurt things. In the new YouTube Dashboard, you go to settings -> Channel -> Branding. I just downloaded a basic "Subscribe" image from Google and used that. You can use something more closely aligned with your branding if it floats your boat.

I couple that with featuring my most subscribed video to non subscribers, and I feature a video with the highest watch time to subscribers. The logic here is that I want to do as much as I can to get people in the door, and then keep them watching my content for as long as possible.

Dropping helpful or amusing comments in the videos of other mega stars in your field is a solid way to get a few extra subs. I know that John Morris talks a lot about freelancing, but for devs. There is a universality to what you preach, so it may be worthwhile to stop by and drop some comments.

I would also recommend considering changing the channel name to something like "Freelancing with Lex DeVille" or "Building your Freelance Empire with Lex DeVille". If you couple that with the previous suggestion, you'll be able to grow significantly quicker.

I'm not a mega star, but I think each of these small tweaks have helped me achieve relatively quick success. I hit 1000 subs on March 23rd of this year (22 months since starting on YT), implemented most of these changes in the last several months, and then hit 3500 today. Not viral growth, but it makes it easier to endure the grind when you see some growth in your growth rate.

Also, upload frequency: I struggle with this since my content is primarily AI tutorials, which take significant amounts of time to prep, but I've found that 10 - 12 per month is ideal and that 1 per week is the bare minimum to cement the gains you've made.

I'm waaaay behind on this. My mum's been in and out of hospital for the past few weeks and it throws everything out. Family first, then team, then clients. This YouTube work isn't billable or bringing in revenue (yet), so it's ended up on the long finger.

I did want to update this though because my kids LOVE that I have a YouTube channel. "How many subscribers have you got now dad? Oooo... nearly 400! Well done dad."

On the school run this morning our 11 year old in the back advised me to put a link to the new channel in the description of all the videos on my current channel (when the new channel is up). He gave me some other advice too but I didn't hear him as I was concentrating on the road. Dayum... I might have to start paying him for his YouTube consulting services.

@andy , well, may I have an ot question? Ill make it:
I m afraid of having my face in the internet. I don’t know exactly, why. Maybe I don’t want it because of my job or because of fear to be recogniced. Whats your thought about my fear?

Why? Because this thread made me a bit nervous. I think, I could make my bike tuning blog better via YouTube clips.
But clips require my face, do they?
thanks

Clips don’t *require* your face, but would likely benefit from it.

I can understand wanting to fly under the radar because of a job.

I can also understand a fear of the camera. It was super weird doing a selfie video and talking to the phone with no-one there. It’s incredible how self-conscious and stupid you suddenly feel. And then there’s the cringe factor when you look back on the video.

I think this is normal. We’re seeing and hearing ourselves how others do and not how we normally do. It takes getting used to. Practice it. I kinda enjoyed the weird feeling because it was so new and unexpected. It’s pretty much gone now because of practice.

Then there’s the more pragmatic part. Don’t worry about what people think of your video... because hardly anyone will see it anyway! You can publish to YouTube or wherever and most likely no-one will see it at all.

What really helped me was creating a Snapchat account and practicing creating videos there. I only gave out my username to people who asked for it. Maybe you can do the same and create a small group of likeminded people you trust who will support and help each create videos?

I was at the kitchen island yesterday evening with some post-it notes and the kids gathered round to see what I was doing.

"I'm going to create ads to show people some stuff, and then if they like it they can click through to here to blah blah."

My kids know YouTube pretty well, and know about ads too.

Here's the advice they gave me about the ad:
  • 11 yo: You have to stop them clicking “Skip ad”. You probably have five seconds.

  • 9 yo: Get straight into it.

  • 7 yo : Don’t be boring.

I just setup a brand new Google Ads account and some campaigns.

I've also linked the Google Ads account with the YouTube channel.

Here's the two campaigns created just now. Currently they send people to the YouTube video in the previous post. I'll get a page created, embed the video in the page, and redirect visitors from Google to the page. I'll add a transcription and screenshots too.

The title of this thread is wrong though. I'm not interested in "Growing A New YouTube Channel", which is why I couldn't follow-through on my homeworks designed to help me grow a channel.

I'm going to use YouTube to get content in front of people who it will help, with the goal of getting their email address in exchange for even more helpful content. I'll then present paid products so those who want to can pay for more.

I've changed the name of the thread to "Figuring out YouTube".

Just checking the Google Ads campaigns I created yesterday...

29171

There was no volume for the YouTube campaign. Maybe a CPV bid of €0.10 was too low. I've increased it to €1.00.

12 clicks (visitors) from the paid search campaign on Google.
  • We lost 37.12% Impression Share due to budget, and 54.02% due to rank (bid price * quality score). Adding those up and we had 91.14% Impression Share lost. So we know that the "< 10%" for "Search impr. share" was 8.6% (why don't they just tell us?!?).
  • There's no conversion tracking as I'm sending people to YouTube.

Views went up from 88 to 109, and I had one brand spanking new comment:

29172

Next steps:
  • See if I can get YouTube Ad impressions, views, and clicks.
  • Figure out what people were searching for on Google.
  • Put the YouTube video onto a page I own so I can send them there from Google, and track them better.
  • Think about how to get people's email addresses? In exchange for a course on how to do keyword research with the Google Keyword Planner?

The YouTube ads are still under review, which is why those campaigns have no data.

I decided to target the whole world with the ads on Google, rather than just the more expensive US. I want to buy data on a whiff of spend. It's ok if most of the visitors come from much poorer countries for now.

# Google Ads Stats:

There seems to be a nice progression here:
  • (Bear in mind I'm interested in getting Impressions and Clicks at the moment, not email signups or sales.)
  • I've just dropped bids from €0.10 to €0.05. I'm curious if we still get volume.

29191

Data by device is interesting:
  • Videos are going to have to look good on a mobile (I already suspected that).

29195

# Stats for the video from within YouTube:

29192

I don't understand this Audience retention graph:
  • How can it rise upwards in places? Surely it should be going down as we move from left to right? I'll dig into it later... I'm not so fussed about this at the moment (because I've had 4 comments thanking me for the video).
29193

I presume this is good:
29194

Other stuff I've figured out:

1) Put rel=0 on the end of the YouTube video URL so only videos from your own channel show in the related videos at the end.

2) If you grab the URL from the "Share" button on YouTube then it is on the youtu.be domain. I switched to the youtube.com URL and think this runs with a better CTR.

3) I'm much happier starting projects like this, even though my coach's strategy makes sense. My whole philosophy is to get something up asap and see what the market thinks.

To Do:

I'm creating a landing page where I’ll embed the YouTube video. The CTA will be to take a free course on how to use the Google Keyword Planner. I'm fiddling with this in Kajabi at the moment. I'd like to send visitors to this and see how many folks signup to access the free course.

Thanks for this thread Andy. I started a YouTube channel as well. It is focused on my hobby, scrapping. As in, scrapping old electronics into recyclable components. I intend to use YT, and other forms of social media, in my consulting biz but don't want to learn on that job. People in the scrapping community are more tolerant of mistakes and since they aren't paying me, I can learn there and have fewer mistakes where I want it to count.

Yeah. I like the idea of a sandbox for testing, and then taking the learnings and applying them to other channels.

Got my first email signup!

I setup a quick pipeline (funnel) in Kajabi last night. The landing page has the YouTube video embedded in it. Below the video is a simple CTA button where people can get tips delivered to their inbox.

When they click that button they’re sent to page containing a form where they enter their name and email and click another button to signup.

They’re then put into an email automation and sent to a simple Thank You page. I loaded up one email, which is the story of how I helped my electrician friend.

I’ll start optimising it soon.

I'd like to figure out how to show NO related videos when the YouTube video finishes. I suppose I could import the video into Kajabi (which hosts it on Wistia). The beauty of using the embedded YouTube video is that views of the video are still going up as people watch the video on my landing page.

I will create a similar YouTube video to run as an ad and send people to the page with the opt-in form. I’ll mention it in the video, which I currently don’t do. I’ll not set this up till I’ve figured out what the best lead magnet is.

The goal was to get a wee funnel created and then trickle people through it.

10 clicks so far today for €0.88.

One email signup too, so that’s cool. Now there’s a point adding the other emails to the automation.

No conversion tracking in place yet, but it’s not needed. I can tell at the end of the week how many people visited the page from the Google Ads interface, and I can count how many people are on the email list. Setting up conversion tracking would have been solving a problem I don’t have (aka overthinking).

It’s a bit too soon to tell, but it looks like switching from the youtube.com domain to this new domain has halved the CTR. People trust YouTube, and maybe even thought the ad was an official ad somehow? I’ll keep an eye on CTR and see if it really has fallen.

I messaged Google support and my YouTube ads are under manual review. They've escalated it for me.

Google Ads paid search campaign stats to date:

29214

What the landing page currently looks like:
  • Note how I've written the headline so it wraps nicely (on this wide screen anyway).
  • I'd like everything to be above the fold. There's a bit too much space between sections, but this is the best I could do for the moment, and it's good enough.

29212

Here's the next page people get to:

Wow. Interesting day and it's not finished yet.

Ads on YouTube:
  • The YouTube ads got approved not long after I pm'd someone in Google.
  • Only the instream-skippable ads are showing.
  • They have had 1k impressions and 208 views for €4.
  • I'm surprised I even got 2 clicks. I don't know what people are clicking on as I've not setup any cards at the end of the video.
  • I guess 10% of people getting to see 100% of the video is reasonably good, although it's only a 70 second video?

29228

This has certainly bumped the views of the video up (to 431), but not changed the number of subscribers, likes, or comments. Again, I've not got any calls-to-action in the video so I'll do another version of the video to see if I can encourage people to like, subscribe, and comment.

It just goes to show what a hollow metric views are. Granted, I hope the video has helped folks, and I suppose there's a bit of fake "social proof", but I'm more interested in direct response.

29230

Ads on Google:
  • It seems the CTR isn't affected by me switching from YouTube.com to my own domain.
  • Our Search Impression Share was only 11.26%. Given there were 632 Impressions, this suggests there were 5,600 searches we could have showed for.
  • We lost 19% Impression Share due to budget, so I could maybe drop bids even more.
  • We lost 69.70% Impression Share due to rank (not bidding enough). There's no point bidding more at this stage.
  • There were 3 email sign-ups today, and I've no doubt they came from the ads on Google, and not the ads on YouTube.
29229

Email Signups:
  • I got 3 signups out of 58 visitors.
  • That's a 5% conversion rate. Lots of room to improve that. I think that should be 20%-40%+.
  • I sent each person an email by hand. I was going to record a quick Loom video and send that to each, but client work took over. I may do so later if anyone replies.

To Do:
  • Add a thumbnail and an end card to the YouTube video.
  • Add Google Analytics to Kajabi, and setup conversion tracking in Google Ads.

Got a load done this evening. I thought I'd show how I go about it.

I made a task for each thing I did, and then marked it as done. The intention is to give full visibility of what I did for my team, and for repeatability (it will become an SOP).

Note that the tasks are in reverse order. The tasks done last are at the top, the ones done first are at the bottom.

Also note the task we haven't completed yet? No action faking here.

Whoa!

Google Ads Stats Today So Far:
  • €0.01 CPV ?!?
  • There's actually been 4 email signups today (I can see them in Kajabi and Google Analytics but Google Ads hasn't registered them yet).

It's late here, but I'll try to get a CTA Overlay over my video.
I don't need more views of the video, what I want is people clicking through to my landing page!

Google documentation:

I think this is an example of a CTA Overlay:

Conversion Tracking seems to be working:
  • It's good to see the 4 conversions reported in Google Ads for the full stats for yesterday.
29255

29256

Last night I created a new ad with the Overlay CTA:
  • It's a bit hard to see as it's white over white, compared to the Masterclass one in the post above which has a dark background. Something for me to think about for future video ads.
  • I don't know if the actual "thumbs up" and "thumbs down" appear in ads. I've not seen them out in the wild.
  • I also think it's time to create a new YouTube channel so I have a company logo in the ad instead of a picture of me.
29248

  • The ad could work better on a mobile as it stands, but there's not much room for copy to show when I view it on my iPhone 5S.
  • Note that most of the people seeing the ad are on their mobile too, so optimising for mobile seems the be the way forward.
  • We can only use 15 characters for the ad headline, and 10 characters for the CTA copy. That's pretty tight! I'll test different versions of it.
  • Here's a demo of the video ad on a mobile:
29250

The new YouTube campaign setup last night with this "conversion ad" has already hit budget today:
  • 18 people who saw the ad clicked through to the landing page.
  • I also got 310 more views on the video.
  • That's still a lot of data to learn from for only €5.68.
29251

  • No-one signed up (I can see from the Kajabi interface).
  • It's not surprising since I'm sending people to this very sparse page (here's the mobile version).
  • (I like to start pages simple and then build things out if I can get visitors to it.)

Next Steps?
  • My preference would be to create a free course that people signup for and progress through, rather than have a free email series. That way they have the experience of "buying" a product, AND they create an account. I can add more videos to the free course over time and email everyone when they're up. This can drive people back to the site to watch the new video, and I presume they'll also be able to see the other free and paid courses that are available.
  • I'm not going to add much copy in the above landing page. The headline plus a few bullet points should explain what the product is, and it should sell itself. As expected, getting Google Ads tips emailed to you from some random dude online isn't that enticing.
  • The free course should be something that anyone interested in Google Ads would want to take. I think video versions of some of my main Google Ads threads would be good. And I've been meaning to do video versions of them for years.
  • I might even put up the free videos on YouTube, but they'd not be in any order, and they'd have CTAs in them (Like, Subscribe, Share, Comment, Signup, etc). It would make sense to also have bonus/extras in the free course that aren't on YouTube.
  • I'll leave the campaigns to run as is for the rest of the day while I think about it. I may pause them tonight as there's no point spending more or buying more data when I know I need to work on things.

I'm pleased with the progress in the last 7 days. Much more than the three whole months since I started this thread! The lesson for you if you're following this is to come out of the gate swinging. Engage, engage, engage!

I've paused my Google Ads campaigns for the moment while I think about what to do.
  • I got 14 email signups from the ads on Google for €17.66, which is €1.26 per signup.
  • The ad on YouTube have increased the views on the video from 88 to 1,832 for about €23.
  • The signup to an email series was a deliberately poor enticement, but quite a few signed up from the ads on Google.
  • I've currently no interest in creating and testing an email series. I'd rather get people into a free online course/workshop and then take it from there.
  • So I'm thinking about what videos to create for this free course/workshop. I want the videos to give people aha moments so they understand the power of Google Ads. I want people to understand WHAT they'd use Google Ads for, and WHY. Then they'll be more likely to want to know HOW to do so... which is where my paid course would come in.
  • There's no need for me to keep spending money and getting email signups when I'm rethinking this part.
Total ad spend = €64. (Initially I was targeting the US with the ads on Google, and this had a higher CPC, and I was sending people to the video on YouTube where they weren't presented with a chance to sign into anything.)

EDIT: I just spotted my video ranks 4th on YouTube for "how to use the google keyword planner for free". Not that I think too many people search for that.

Done this evening:
  1. Added subtitles to the video. They're still being processed. I've never created subtitles on my own videos so it will be interesting how they come out, and where they show on the video.

  2. Added a 5 second end screen to get people to click through and watch another keyword research video on my channel.

Now I know about End-Screens I can talk a bit at the end of the video and have some call-to-actions where I ask people to subscribe and to watch the next video in the series (the series is to be created) and then the end-screens pop up.

Note that end-screens can be up to 20 seconds of the end of the video, but I had to only use 5 seconds so I didn't overlay it over parts of the video that were needed.

I'm curious is this single end-screen will increase the stats for the second video.
I've restarted the "Skippable in-stream ads" campaign that was generating €0.01 views of the video:
29328

For the record, here's the stats for the other video:

Doh. I had it so YouTube recommended the next video to watch instead of the one I chose - so I had no idea if it increased the views of the next video.

I've changed the end card to send people to this video:

29358

On another note, stats for yesterday:
29359

That's €0.0047 per view! Blimey.

It's a nice steady stream of free views for me to test different videos with.
Here's the number of views on that video. Not many actions taken, but that's for me to work out now.

Nice Chrome extension to remove bookmarks and things (useful for recording screenshares).

Also... nice wee tutorial video. I like that it doesn't have a talking head in the corner. Why do we need talking heads all the time?
