RISKS IN DIY SOURCING AND IMPORTING
A recent post almost escaped my attention because it was posted in a forum that was not relevant to the subject.

The member was not an importer, but had sent back to his supplier a component part that needed calibrating, and he guessed how he could avoid paying duty, but he was a very long way off the mark.

A question before shipping the component would have saved him a substantial amount, because now, if he is to retrieve the item he will have lost not only the first lot of duty paid by his supplier on receipt of the item, but will also end up paying duty a second time.

The post was made in the Growing and Scaling Your Business, People Mgmt: Customers, Employees, Investors forum.

Here is the thread where you can see the question and my reply. Manufacturer custom fees issue.

What this demonstrates is the need to search before entering uncharted waters. A reasonable search should have led to my AMA.

Even if the answer required is too lengthy to post, and I suggest that it is advisable to buy my book for a complete answer, the ROI should be considered. (Not so in this case. I would have briefly answered with sound advice and prevented the problem arising.)

People vastly underestimate the costs that can appear from importing mistakes.

Your book definitely saved me a lot of trouble, but even then I’ve still lost thousands of dollars out of ignorance.

The worst experience I’ve ever had was importing with vanguard

One of many examples was the thousand dollars that I had to pay to label and re-palletize at a warehouse because I thought sticking some shipping labels on boxes should be cheap (and it should) - but that didn’t stop them from screwing me over since they had complete control over my cargo.

I suggest that anyone planning on sourcing products overseas should have a look at my site Proven Global Sourcing - Proven Global Sourcing

Read the hundreds of testimonials and see how many relate to the huge savings made or the mistakes avoided by reading my book. Many of those testimonials are from Fastlane members.

P.S. Don't buy my book direct there. Go to my MARKETPLACE OFFER. (Link below) where you can buy it a a good discount.

Good day Walter!
Thank you for feedback.
Im glad to say, the issue has been solved and lessons are learned. I made a post to original thread mentioned above.
Hope that someone else can learn from this.
The device was intended to send from EU to Ukraine for servicing — I send it to them and after service they will return it.
Therefore i used broker to declare it as temporary export/import. Which means when the goods arrive tto UA, duty is not required to be paid and when delivered back to EU Duty is not required to be paid. Therefore special declaration has to be made, which was done by my broker.
When the goods arrived to UA, the receiver failed to do needed paperwork and Customs fees had to be paid.
From here, the lesson i learned: No prior agreement was made, who will cover this sum. From the other side, the shipment was declared as DDP, so theoretically it should be me to cover the fees. But there is a but. Since the declaration was made as temporary import/export which assumes no import tax and they failed the paperwork, Im not sure if incoterms apply in this case or not. At least my side was done properly.
I should have made a prior agreement, who will pay the duty and then approve their action.
Final word:
I settled the situation by paying the fees to maintain good business relationships with them and consider this sum as school money.

Thank you all for your time reading this.

Is this an ad for your book? How did you escaped moderation?

He didn't escape moderation. @Walter Hay is an epic contributor and has provided a ton of value to our forum members for free. More value than others ever hope to share. (He's paid for Marketplace Ads in which he directs people to here.)

Thanks @AllenCrawley for your response to this question posted by a new member 12 days after joining the forum. I would usually simply ignore such a post, but his post proves the need for this thread.

If he had made even a very small effort to find out something about me, he would surely have not posted in that manner. There are many posts on the forum expressing thanks for me having saved a member from serious loss. He might have found some of those. He might also have discovered something about my attitude towards helping.

Clearly he had not even bothered to read more than one post, thereby missing the post by @MitchM, and the one by @HenryTheGreat

With him exhibiting such a lazy attitude I seriously doubt that he will ever succeed in business.

I remind all new members that there is a search icon 29006at the right hand end of the toolbar at the top of the page.
