Hey fastlaners, excited to be here.

My story

25 y/o from Scotland, read TMF a few years ago which totally changed my mindset. Started a business prior to reading the book which failed as it didn’t really make CENTS.

My next business failed as I made the mistake of partnering up, it wasn’t a good match but we live and learn.

I got a bit disheartened after this but then picked up Unscripted at the start of the year and am back on track. I’ve started a new business now in e-commerce, I feel a lot more prepared after my previous failures.

Something I constantly hear about is “you are the average of the 5 people you associate with the most”, what are your guys thoughts on this? I’ve really struggled to find friends with any sort of ambition.

Anyway really hope I can contribute to the forum and if there’s any fellow Scots here feel free to get in touch for a meet-up

Welcome aboard Andrew from Scotland.

I wouldn't worry about that Jim Rohm saying. It's partially true, but I think that's mostly because "normies" don't like to hang out with people who aren't similar to them. People crave reinforcement of their preexisting beliefs, so anything that rocks that boat is to be avoided.

But yeah, finding people with ambition is a little difficult. At least now you're here.

Thanks for that man. That makes sense.

I guess that’s one of the reasons this is such a valuable forum, because people with a Fastlane mindset aren’t easy to find.

Welcome to the forum. Most of my friends here and the UK are Glaswegians. A Geordie myself, here in Oz 21 years. If I can help you with the site or anything else just ask. On the verge of my own business which I'll post about as soon as there's anything the forum might like to hear about.
Stick around as those two books are your best weapons in the business world imo.

Something I constantly hear about is “you are the average of the 5 people you associate with the most”, what are your guys thoughts on this? I’ve really struggled to find friends with any sort of ambition.

I would not worry about this too much.

If you decided you wanted a hobby and thought Salsa dancing might be your thing you would join a Salsa class.

By default you are now around people who have Salsa as a hobby.

As you move up classes you get to know better dancers who more than likely will be going to clubs outside of the class.

You may start going with them. Which means you start to cut back on seeing your other friends as much.

As you improve more you may start to think you may want to enter competitions.

So now you are going round the country.

At each progression, from starting to whatever level you strive for you are by default coming into contact with and associating with people at the that level plus the one above.

The fact that your 5 mates from school you like to hang around with but have different jobs and hobbies does not mean you should think there is anything wrong with them and ditch them.

That would be absurd wouldn't it?

So if you start a business who are you supplying and who is supplying you? Other businesses.

As you grow by default these suppliers and customers will change too and therefore your contact list will start changing.

Fellow Scot here (from Glasgow). There are definitely like-minded souls about. None of my friends are into this kinda thing but it doesn't stop me, that's what the internet is for

Thanks Andy, I’ve read a couple of your posts before whilst just browsing the forum and taken some real value from those. Hope I can give back!

PS: Hello :)

Hey Dan,

Thanks so much for clearing that up. I guess if the quote was 100% accurate there would be no need to start a business we’d all just befriend successful people instead. I was just unsure whether it was something that required intentional effort.

Thanks again,

Welcome Andrew, appreciate the intro.

Something I constantly hear about is “you are the average of the 5 people you associate with the most”, what are your guys thoughts on this?

I understand the meaning, but don't believe it is entirely accurate.

I can hang out with all types of folks, they don't need to be uber Fastlaners.

You should just stay away from the victim, loser, blame-game types. Good people can come from all walks.

Hi Andrew (from a fellow Celt),

Personally I think the saying has merit. It's not a hard and fast rule of course but they also say birds of a feather flock together and your mindset will certainly change given enough time in an environment.

At the extreme look at how cults operate, and Stockholm Syndrome of course.

And at the fun level you have stuff like this:

Anyway I think if someone wants to raise their game then associating with people they would like to emulate would certainly have an effect long term.
