I've had a really tough 2018, from a number of things happening rather unexpected and around the same time, both in my professional life with my businesses and with my personal life.

I feel like for the most part I did a really good job coping with the stress and turn of events- I completed a full distance Ironman back in April, and I feel at that point I felt the best I've felt in a very long time.

But, over the last month and a half I feel as though my mental and emotional health has taken a steady decline- more events have unfolded in the last weeks, and it's nearing the 1 year anniversary of my mother's suicide which is having more of an effect on me than I thought it would. I am finding myself in a mental slump that I desperately want to get out of.

I am trying to get back on track- I am trying to get back into a regular workout routine, I've quit eating fast food, I am also trying to get up before dawn everyday (where as the last few weeks I've been struggling to get up before 9am).

I was hoping some of y'all may have some advice? Or anyone who has been in a mental slump, how you've gotten out of it? How did you kick yourself into gear and do the work that you know you are capable of and have been capable of in the past? I've always been the person who can work from 6am-12am everyday with no issues, but now I am struggling to put even 25% of that effort into my day.

Any advice is greatly appreciated!

it will take lots of time, pursue a hobby of yours that you can immerse yourself in.

for me i picked up snowboarding which removes me from my mind and all i focus on is keeping my balance and enjoying my run (dont think its possible to snowboard in 100 degree texas)

what hobbies do you have? the most important thing is to spend time doing something you enjoy & be around good people helps as well alot

Thank you for your response!

Triathlon is my big hobby, racing and training- and sense all this unfolded, I've put that on the back burner. I suppose I do need to make more time in my day, and make it more of a point to do it- even just for a half hour

Aubrey, I didn't know about the loss of your mother. I'm so sorry to learn of that.

No matter the cause of a death, significant milestone dates, especially the one year anniversary of the event, can bring a greatly renewed sense of grief and of any still unresolved emotions and questions.

I also wonder if the Triathalon might have been so demanding, that even though it felt great to be able to do it, your body wants some recovery time.

I'd recommend you check with a medical doc about whether there is any physical cause for the low energy and mood. And also, find a counselor if possible (minister if you have one, mental health pro if there's a way to afford that through insurance or Employee Assistance Program at work, etc.) to talk over whether these might be totally understandable symptoms of a very common and very human diagnosis: Being someone who is still in the midst of hard grief, even though life's going okay overall.

@AubreyJ how are you doing?

I've been in a mental/emotional struggle for what seems like years now...but I only realized it a little less than a year ago. The main problem I find is that there is SO MUCH information targeted to people in our situation that its REALLY HARD to find something that actually has an effect.

What I've found to work is you have to change your thoughts. Read or listen to LOTS of books. Listen to podcasts. Watch YouTube videos. Start introducing new ideas into your mind and eventually you should find something that triggers a feeling within you. Then you have a clue. A clue as to what one of your core limiting beliefs may be. Write it down on paper. Go find a new book on that subject and learn more.
You need to LEARN YOURSELF. Not the you who's reading this, but the "you" beneath that. The you who you are, not the you you choose to be. Study that "you" to understand why that person has turned out the way they are (whether positive or negative)...then you can start to teach them a better way to be.

I 100% agree with this- there are so many solutions for things like this that you don't really know where to turn, but at the end of the day what works for you may not work for me, and what works for me may not work for someone else- it's so much on a person to person basis and that can be frustrating.

I am doing well, thank you for asking!

Over the last month I've really been trying to get my routine in check- signed up for a marathon that's happening in December so I have a training goal so I can keep track of and stay on top of my fitness. I went vegan to help myself get out of the routine of eating fast food, and I've been trying to get up at 5:30am everyday so that I just get a jump start to the day and feel overall better. I've gotten back into the habit of creating daily/weekly to-do lists...really just getting back into the regime that I used to follow religiously , and have done for years, but fell off of in the last year.

As for depression and just mental slump, it's gotten better. I think the to-do lists and healthy eating has helped a lot- having a clear vision and focus for each day helps a lot as well. I've always had minor anxiety but during the last few months, my minor and sparse anxiety attacks become more and more frequent and severe- so a couple weeks ago I actually went to the doctor and got prescribed anxiety medication.

So overall things are good, the repercussions of the events of the last year aren't over with quite yet, but it seems like they will be by the end of the year- so there is a light at the end of the tunnel. So for now, I am just concentrating on what is in my control, my fitness, eating, and my businesses
