Hey fellas,

I'd really like to put together (or find) some kind of online group where we can discus, push and maybe criticize each other.

I literally have zero people around me that have their eyes open and want more out of life and I keep hearing how important it is to have positive people in your life.

Anyone in?

-Chris

Have you created a progress thread in here? Create one and a few people may tag along and then you’ll have your wee group?

I haven't yet. I just thought it would be beneficial to have a place where some of us can actually talk and motivate each other and what not.

It certainly is beneficial to have a place to talk and motivate each other.

Progress threads are a good start. INSIDERS ones are even better once you're going because they're not open to Google and the outside world, and because the folks on the inside have shown an (albeit small) monetary commitment to entrepreneurship. It means the quantity of feedback might be less (not always), but the quality of feedback is higher.

Another way to think about is that @MJ DeMarco has created the books and this watering hole and attracted like-minded folks. Those that take-take-take end up leaving, or just lurking. Those that contribute are raising their hand that they susbscribe to MJ's values, and the values of everyone who makes this their online home.

So if you also subscribe to MJ's values then stick around on here and keep the conversations on this platform to help others find it and gain value from it. It's our way of giving back to MJ.

Over time you may find a small group of people forming anyway, based on those that follow and interact on your progress thread, and maybe where you follow and interact on their progress threads. That's how you find your small mastermind group.

HTH!

I don't understand.

That's why I created the forum, a central place to gather, talk, and motivate each other.

If you're looking for a tighter sub-group (say something like, people in Florida, or people who are doing eCommerce) that functionality will probably be coming soon to the forum in the form of user created sub-groups, or clubs, much like Slack or Discord works.

Thanks Andy. Just a note, I don't need everyone to conform to my values -- just some core concepts like freedom through entrepreneurship and providing legitimate value (over bro-marketing). We don't need to be dogmatic here about every single thing I write about (Including CENTS!) because it is impossible for everyone to agree with that many concepts.

I agree that a progress thread would be a great start but at the moment I'm not far along in anything to do that just yet. Also, I'm sure it stupid but idk how I feel about posting something like that on a forum. I know many of this forums members have been here awhile and are trusted but I'm sure there are also people on here looking for ideas and what not.

I guess depending on what I end up doing maybe I'll feel more comfortable starting a progress thread.

I do definitely subscribe to MJ's values and I would eventually love to be able to contribute to this great forum as much as you and others have. This "whole thing" is so new to me and right now I'm just trying to figure it all out.

I know you created this great forum for that and I am very grateful for it. It's just that sometimes it's nice to just verbally talk to people about things. In a world with constant keyboard and phone texting it's nice to just interact with people. I apologize if I'm not making sense.

The user created sub-groups, or clubs sounds really cool. I'll definitely be looking forward to those being implemented.

I'd also like to apologize to you MJ. It wasn't my intention to make it sound like this forum was anything less than great. I do truly appreciate what you've given us.

Don’t worry, it didn’t come across like that to me at any rate.

I don’t think you realise the value you can already provide. Maybe check out the 700+ PMs thread in my signature. Just supporting people by liking a post and explaining why can make a big difference to their day, and will come back ten-fold to you.

Okay good, I'm always kinda worried that something I say may come across wrong or be misinterpreted.

I'll definitely give that thread a good read.

I would really like to help out more and provide more value to the forum but I currently don't have a whole lot of experience myself. Until I can actually contribute good information I feel like misc comments in threads aren't going to help anyone.

But you're right though, I may not be able to add a lot of value at the moment but I can definitely support the forum members the best I can.

Thank you for the rep btw!

I think you have that alright, right here in these forums. Make a post where you ask for people to discuss, push, and criticize something you'd like to share, and you'll get those responses.

Don't underestimate that. Just from having had different life experiences than other people, you might happen to know about something that would be new for someone else. Also, you can say thanks for pointing that out; can I ask you a follow up question; how did this work for you; I hope to do something like that; or even, I hope to NEVER do something like that! ;-) These kind of comments might not be profound, but they start to build good vibes, connections, and friendships.

That can happen, but if you eventually stop digging, it is possible to climb out of the hole and get back in people's good graces. (A voice of experience here!)

You are starting in such a gracious, respectful, polite way that I think people will easily give you the benefit of the doubt here.

If you could make a web design section I would love that. Lots of people in my FB group have asked for something more and I wasn't overly keen to go setting up my own forum/sub reddit. Don't know how you feel about this but I think web design is inherently linked to entrepreneurship so it would be a good fit.

If you are interested happy to go over some ideas via PM.

Cool, thanks dude!

I think you have that alright, right here in these forums. Make a post where you ask for people to discuss, push, and criticize something you'd like to share, and you'll get those responses.

Yeah I believe that people on here are cool enough to not take things too seriously if criticized and stuff like that but it would just be nice to have actual verbal discussions from time to time.

Don't underestimate that. Just from having had different life experiences than other people, you might happen to know about something that would be new for someone else. Yeah that makes sense and I do agree with you. I just don't want to be "that guy" that's always commenting on things just to comment on everything.

I don't understand.

Literally laughed out loud. My first thought when I read it was like...you're literally on it..

But when @ChrisR explained why he wanted something a little more private because he didn't feel he had much to openly contribute just yet I got it.

@ChrisR , like @Late Bloomer said - you've got something to contribute. You may just not value it as others might.

Additionally, the progress thread isn't intended to be created after you've done something. It's actually quite helpful and inspiring when you look back on someone's when they are doing well to see how it all kinda started. You lose editing ability after 10 days or so intentionally so that future members can see the documented history. I would just make sure you're staying relevant and on topic. If your first action step is taking a course, or reading Unscripted , then that's where you're at. Document it and how you intend to put it to use. Then update when you do take the action and how it turned out - good, bad, or ugly.

Interestingly, I’ve wondered about this too. I have a wee forum for people who’ve bought my course. I want that as a support forum for people who’re using my specific strategies and tactics. I still think there could be a place in TFLF where I could chatter about lead gen more without feeling I’m spamming the main forum.

Something else I’ve noticed is that being in a Discord or Facebook group lends itself to a different style of conversation than the formal forum threads we typically have. I haven’t reconciled it in my head, but my gut tells me a platform that allows both chatrooms and forum threads might be very useful.

Happy to chat/PM over this too @MJ DeMarco.

The thing with chat is that not all people here have time for it.

Some visit this forum in morning, some in evening, so they would not "meet" in chat room.

If you post a thread, then its easier to gather replies from all of them.

I’m new to chat rooms. What I find is you just join in whatever chat happens to be going on, or you pop in with a thought or question and chat with whoever’s there about it. They’re not for keeping up to date on, that would be impossible and a waste of time.

Forum is more like a book, in sense that each thread is narrowed to one topic and more lengthy.
Not sure if one can provide same value in chat but maybe its worth trying.

I have some experience managing discord groups. I believe that discord shines in the 5-20 people range because of easiness of voice chat, link sharing etc. But any more than that and it doesn't work too well and the quality of conversation goes down. I would be willing to make one for a small (15-20ish) group of newer entrepreneurs who want to remain consistently engaged with their peers and keep each other accountable.- been considering it for some time now.

Is there a way you could offer MJ to link it into his site, so that only registered users on this site would be able to get into that group, and the group would be accessible through this same url?

I’m gonna say it at the risk of sounding like a jerk. All I can do is preface by saying it’s not my intent, so I’m sorry if it comes off that way.

Do we really think we need to add on yet another way to postpone action steps? It’s hard enough as it is.

We’ve read books. Researched. Taken Courses. Read these forum topics. Posted our own threads. Commented on other threads. Joined mastermind groups. All of which is time not taking action. Not that some of these things aren’t necessary to learn and grow, but now we’re talking about a chat room where we can sit around and talk? Who has time for this?

I’d argue the guys who have the time to do it are likely so driven they won’t want to. So then what? We have a bunch of current slowlaners sitting in a room talking about taking action and telling stories?

I think the forum works perfect. Hop on, read a few things useful, post a question if you’ve got one, and try to equally give back when you can. And it lasts forever.

If something is so critical that you need to talk to someone RIGHT NOW because it’s your big breakout moment and if you don’t talk to them you won’t make it. Well, you weren’t gonna make it.
Google. Youtube. Udemy. TFF search function.

I understood the OPs original reason for bringing it up, but I hope we put his concerns to rest.

Just had to say it.

I’m in TFLF, my own forum, a Discord group, some Facebook groups, and my own team mastermind in Basecamp (a great platform for a mastermind btw).

I find them all useful for many and different reasons.

Just last night I was Googling how to setup Thrivecart so people are added and removed from an ActiveCampaign newsletter. I couldn’t find an answer so posted to the Facebook group for Thrivecart. I wake up to two answers. Incredible.

With the Discord group I can “chat” real-time with people in specific channels and get some incredible insights or get asked good questions. Just from me posting I can come away with clarity, and answers I can post to more permanent places such as a blog, LinkedIn, Instagram (a work in progress), etc.

People who might be reading an exchange between, say, myself and @SinisterLex get to eavesdrop on a copywriting freelancer and a media buying freelancer who are both moving beyond freelancing. Or a Facebook ads specialist explaining to an AdWords specialist about the differences in the platforms.

I liken chat to people discussing things round a table over a coffee. It’s real-time, and the conversations bounce off each other and take on a life of their own.

I liken forum threads more like people taking turns to speak at a podium. It’s more polished, possibly more in depth, but misses some of the magic of real-time chat.

Like anything, these are all tools. How people use them and the results they get are most important.

People who suffer from procrastination or perfectionism (aka fear of shipping) may even get the wee boost they need to take action from them.

I can see the danger, and I can also see the benefits for many who don’t interact daily with people of a similar mindset experiencing similar struggles.
