My wife had five years of hell battling cancer, therefore I would start a cancer research charity, if there wasn't one; but since there are some very good ones already I give to them instead.

Anything relating to ANIMALS or CHILDREN because they're purely innocent.

Grown adults, not so much.

And I'd make sure that the charity wasn't paying their board of directions millions per year and isn't a carbon copy of the Clinton Foundation -- millions of dollars in contributions, but only a tiny portion actually went to help anyone.

Something involving education. 'Teach a man to fish' and all that.

Basically if I could make one single charitable contribution to the world, it would be to overthrow the educational establishment.

It is the root of all the world's malaise, and it needs to be smashed and replaced with something ten times better. We all know of particular acute signs of this: in the US for example it's the PhD working at a checkout, or the graduate with $0.5M debt, or the statistic that the longer people stay in education (especially public, and especially if they stay permanently -- i.e. become a teacher), the more leftist they end up etc. But the problem runs much much deeper than the stark examples at the end of the funnel. Everywhere in the world, every student says the same thing, from very early on: "I'm never going to use this crap".

If a 14yo student can observe that fact, why can't parents and teachers?

The answer is simple. You are born with an unf**cked head, and it takes time to get f**cked in the head. And then render that upon the next generation. Society's ills are passed down.

And this is crucially important to world progress. It's not about whether Johnny ends up making $5M/year or $5k/year at 30 (although that's important too). Every kid who's life is pissed to the wind by forcing him to waste his young brain on junk he'll never use, is one more delay in us reaching a cure for a disease killing millions a year, one more delay in an evil government being overthrown, one more delay in us reaching Mars.

Millions of people are dying year after year, or suffering bitterly, or even just suffering (no one likes having the flu or a cold), unnecessarily. There is a cheap cure for malaria. There is a cheap instant cure for acne, baldness, accident-caused disabilities, etc. But it just doesn't exist yet. Every year that guy or that company that creates it fails to come into existence, is another batch of millions of people's lives ruined.

The root cause is parents. Teachers are the mere employees of parents. Most parents select schools for their kids on the most self-absorbed measures they can. How close is it. Does it have a pretty brochure. How cheap is it (ideally free). Etc. Stands to reason though. Most 1st world people are lazy losers. Why would that cease when they pop out a kid?

My charity would take the form of a business with 100% capital reinvestment. Indeed it's basically what I've decided is my mission in life, and it's what I'm working towards getting large money for.

The business would be very simple: objective school. It would be as remote from one-size fits all as could be imagined. There would be no farcical 'career counselors'. Any teacher who used the phrase ADHD would be fired on the spot, and if he recommended a medication he'd be sued. There would be no such thing as "core" beyond bare language and civics basics necessary to relate to other members of society. No fixed semesters & exam period. No fixed year levels ("K-12" just gets flat out deleted). And so on. It would be education as an art form: make every student realize their personal fullest life potential as fast as possible.

The marketing model would be simple. No dreamy adverts of smiling kids wearing uniforms. Simple cold hard facts. Debt loads of current graduates. Underemployment rates. Job satisfaction rates. "This is what the last generation of parents did to their children. How about you?".

There's a medical product I would like to make if I can afford design and development (It's a way off though) and I would love to put a portion of the income into giving them out to people who can't afford them.

One of the things I am extremely grateful for is the NHS we have in the UK, there was no way on earth we could have afforded my wife's treatment/operations/surgery, and to put it bluntly she'd now be dead.

I have considered forming a charity for the longest time but having sat on the board of a few non-profits, I know for a fact that many of them are broke and the ones that are not broke, are not efficient with their money.

So the other month, I was listening to a podcast which was discussing for-purpose businesses, which is essentially corporations, designating a % of their profits for charitable causes.
This has a net positive effect on the business as many more people want to back businesses that give back.

We are now are discussing plans to further develop our software, so we can implement in underprivileged countries. Our product will enable communities to access our online tools so they can generate incomes.
Governmental restrictions are a huge problem for us, which is why we are taking Blockchain technology as a serious contender in our applications.

Good vibes

How does doing it directly from your business play out?

In the US, you can get gov't and private grants to kickstart your projects. Then procure donations from companies with a PR + tax incentive, for them. (As a 501c3 Nonprofit Corporation)

It would be a charity that focuses on giving hand-ups, instead of handouts.

I'll only give you enough fish to sustain you through the process of teaching you how to make a fishing hook, and how to fish.
Beyond that, you're on your own. You can either do the fishing or starve - your choice.

Charity would count as one of my "whys". There is just something about it that gives a higher spiritual meaning and even more when it's anonymous and you don't do it to look "good".

I would probably lean more towards economically disadvantaged children with disabilities.

Great question!

The simple answer is that we don't know the full implications of how it'll affect our business.
Its works the same way in the UK with Non-profits, we have several tax incentives to encourage charities.

However, I believe that by doing the work we do, this will naturally increase business because I am of the firm belief that people want to do business with companies that give back + it gives me a major advantage on the USP front. Just take a look at Toms shoes. Personally, I don't really like the shoes but they can take on the bigger brands because of their involvement in community and social enterprise projects.

Hopefully, the increase in business would negate the benefit of a tax incentive that running a non-profit would bring.

I would prefer that if a company wants to help us, then simply buy our products.
Fortunately, we have a product that is on the increase in terms of usage, so we are working towards development before it becomes disrupted.
Essentially, we are breaking the system - way before it needs to be broken.

I'd 100% start an animal charity as well. More specifically, one that would protect FARM ANIMALS because they're the most abused animals on the ENTIRE planet. Nobody cares about them, because we're though at such a young age not to care by the government that push us with foods that don't serve us (meat, dairy eggs) and show us pictures of happy cows, pigs, and chickens when what is really going on is the worst atrocity on the entire planet, but I DEEPLY BELIEVE that everyone is compassionate and used to care about animals other than cats and dogs when they were young, until they were brainwashed and discovering the vegan diet totally by accident was the best thing that happened to me and I know that educating people on the issue brings a lot of change as it's already starting to change, but there's A LOT of work to do. That's the reason I want to be rich, to contribute to that cause.

In my Intro post i stated that one of my goals is to have my own charity. It would definitely involve children. I am sensitive when it come to them especially those who need medical help.

Not long time ago i saw one 3 year old boy on FB who needed some serious help and I felt angry that I couldn't help him in a way I wish I would.

Other type of charity I will do is to provide food supplies to those in need or something like that.

Charity is one type of my motivation to succeed in life. I hope i will get there soon.

Supply Chain Transparency | TOMS®

It looks like TOMS uses "partners" which I'd wager are non profits. Some even directly controlled by them. (I'm speculating)

(US) You can get tax deductions for simply donating inventory:

Understanding the Charitable Giving Tax Deduction – What Can Your Small Business Write Off? | The U.S. Small Business Administration | SBA.gov

The vast majority of businesses are involved in some sort of philanthropic endeavor. But it seems TOMS was smart to leverage what everyone else is already doing.

(2 birds with one stone. Image of a non-profit, with all of the benefits of donating to one)

It reminds me of a commercial from Shell Gas. They told everyone they use additives that make for a cleaner engine with Nitrogen. Turns out, everyone was doing that. They were just the ones to say it.

Definitely a schizophrenic foundation. There’s a stereotype that if your disabled your a twit that doesn’t have the resources to do something with yourself.

It’s just a hunch but maybe all these guys don’t have any hope.

These guys are down on there luck. Maybe something as small as a support group would help. And for some reason they are deciding to go off there meds?

They have no discipline, it’s there responsibility to care for themselves!

I am schizophrenic, and have never claimed to be any less of a man. I joked around the family about it so they wouldn’t hold it against me. Which now seems like something I shouldn’t do... Some of these guys are doing good. I know this girl who found ways to cope, but she seemed off. Another case of being off meds.

If this is going on around here in my small town. Who knows what else could be going on around the world.

This disease isn’t as strange as it sounds. Most people look at me as of having a split personality. Some which isn’t far off. I have problems with feeling emotions which is a hindrance, and voices...but all that takes is dissociation. All of the eastern philosophies and stuff are really useful in that department.

I hope you can be at ease with schizophrenics a little more. If not, a little awareness goes a long ways. With me bringing some brighter spirits might show you. Hopefully I can do this since I don’t see it anywhere else!

But I don’t see all that they have. Without my car I can’t make it to the groups I have found online. They seem great, I may even be able to bring my family. Life is good.

It doesn’t seem like much but maybe just starting a Facebook group would help. I’ve started groups and never did anything with them. Just making the group and trying to see where it would go. But without momentum I think I’m way off.

Wow, thank you, this is pure gold.
I will have a read of those links.

I operate a service, so it would be interesting to so if I could get tax deductions from giving away services rather than inventory.

Yes, I have no doubt that some of my competitors and involved in a sort of philanthropic activities but I would like to capitalise on the benefits of advertising the fact, possibly as one of my main USP's.

Thanks again for the links, I really appreciate it.

based on my values

people with potential should be helped

this is the case for krishnamurti's schools

k_schools.jpg

Schools - J. Krishnamurti Online

Brockwood Park School

the point is to help people with potential to escape the matrix and stupidity

all things that insult human dignity and intelligence on earth

out of 5 teenagers, 4 will say that they love partiying, smoking , all these BS of the matrix

they are the slaves of the future : working, eating, sleeping , voting for idiots and then dying after this absurd life , without questioning anything for 80 years

enough of this circus

it does not interest me

what matters is the teenager of the group who will say:

" i don't care about all theses BS, i care about life, i read books , i want to understand reality "

this is the potential, i am looking for

this is the teenager that i will help

because there is enough yin stupidity on earth

and not enough yang leadership for the future

An organization that provided free presentations to high school students on basic life skills, career options, personal finance, and slow lane vs. fast lane options. I would try to get into the schools to make the presentations but if the schools weren't up for it then I'd have them in some other venue.

Additionally I would work with school districts and teachers to help fund classroom necessities. I think it's asinine that my childrens' yearly school supplies lists include things like tissues and hand sanitizer and teachers have to use their own money to purchase things like dry erase markers and extra pens & pencils for students in need.

Been there, done that. With 4 friends, starting in the late 1980s and through most of the 1990s, in the greater Los Angeles area -- in an ugly, dirty ghetto setting, we started the first shelter for homeless women where we also took in their children. Before us, there were only shelters for women, or for men. We were just five concerned women, who had no special connections or training -- but, we had a dream to help. And we did. I was chairman of the board for 5 years.

We also started feeding line at the church next door. We served thousands of lunches to the homeless street people during those years. Then we ran transitional housing for a few years.

I used to joke that other people were into all kinds of wild & weird things -- my secret life, outside of my very busy professional career, was my work with all of the shelter issues. I was always figuring out how we were going to feed all those mouths, pay the utility bills and keep all of those bathrooms stocked with toilet paper.
