Pardon the slight humblebrag here but I'm pretty excited as I had no FN clue.

I had no idea that my book(s) where THIS popular in South Korea, like Ferris or Malcolm Gladwell proportions. Apparently in their Barnes and Noble store (not sure what it's called) I've been getting some prime real estate.

I knew something had to be going on when my royalty payments were going through the roof over there.

Kinda bittersweet that my books are more popular in Korea than the US -- in a country I never visited. And I cant even say if they were translated well, I've heard some concerns about the translation -- full paragraphs missing, chapters deleted, etc -- I'm guessing due the cultural differences.

Anyhow, I just had to share my small win with you guys, the only people on the planet that would understand the joy!

It's good to be lucky!!

Congrats MJ, really happy for you!

Anyhow, I just had to share my small win with you guys

It may be a small win (for you:)), but to me it's the definition of fastlane, and reminds me of that video you did a good while ago, where you explain how you're making that video once, but it will be working for your forever, even when you sleep.

You should travel there MJ for sure.

Have you ever done a foreign book signing before?

Congrats!

I would say that it is good to create luck.

I think I know why the books get raved more in Korea than in the USA.

The SCRIPT system of academic and corporate overwork is, in some ways, harsher and more restrictive than the Western systems.

Just some time ago, a new Fastlaner from Korea was ranting here on how kids in his place have to go for studies day and night without a minute of leisure. The Koreans do need a change of perspective.

And there aren't many authors who take the time to publish in multiple languages. Lower competition except from bigger brands.

I'm thinking that it could be difficult to translate the SCRIPTED descriptions, where MJ goes on a run of the emotional and social mechanisms. Where English gets pretty descriptive, but Korean, being somewhat mono-syllable like Mandarin or Japanese, it would end up being rephrased with some meaning lost.

A solution might be to engage the help of multiple translators, and cross-check the work to put together the best translation.

Takes shit ton of time, but you cover the holes early.

I'm guessing due the cultural differences.

That would make sense.

Unscripted made some pretty "western" claims and references that may not even exist as issues or movements in SK.

Fun fact about the Korean language - Before the 15th century, most of the country's non-elites were illiterate and the king at that time wanted to change this and helped introduce a more natural, easy to learn version which is what's used today.

You may see a bunch of random symbols (to our eyes) but they all represent very distinct sounds and can be read left to right, up and down.

It's actually so easy and phonetic you can learn to read it (even if you don't understand it) in minutes (okay likely a few hours):

IKinda bittersweet that my books are more popular in Korea than the US -- in a country I never visited.

I lived there for a while, and as scripted as we think the western world is, our scripts pale in comparison to the what the kids growing up in SK will be programmed with. I can definitely see the younger generation starting to rebel against that after some exposure to western internet, and they're really a prime market for your books. It's a pretty capitalistic/materialistic culture, but the big goal is to grow up to be a 'company man' for one of the big conglomerates. Showing them that it's possible to have a good life without following that path seems like it would be hugely attractive to the more rebellious segment of society.

Do you personally keep a copy of each book in all the languages they've been translated in to?

Would be awesome to have a shelf full of books giving a visual of how the value they provide speaks to people regardless of language.

Just curious.

Do your translated books have different acronyms? No acronyms?

My guess is a lot of the creativity is lost.

The publisher actually asked to delete the Discipline chapter and I was like, what? Discipline should have no cultural barriers. And removing it would disruptive the TUNEF roadmap.

Have you ever done a foreign book signing before?

No I haven't.

Do you personally keep a copy of each book in all the languages they've been translated in to?

Yes, if the publisher abides by the contract and sends me copies.

The shelf needs to be bigger now. ;)

Maybe you can consider partnering with a respectable Asian writer to co-author a book titled Unscripted : An Asian Perspective instead? That way you can still get the message across without the cultural barrier, and it can be a lot more relatable to the target audience too. Just a suggestion. I know it's really hard to write a book, let alone writing it with other people.

Congrats for your success in Korea! =)

LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS!!! Congratulations, MJ! Your hard work and dedication paid off in more ways than you ever dreamed. South Korea- that is so cool! Anything omitted is most likely because it would be unrelatable due to cultural differences. It’s all good and all very exciting! Again, congratulations!

Congratulations!

Do you have any plans for a Spanish edition?

I actually sent emails to 2 Spanish publishers but they probably ignored me.

The TMF license was just sold to a pretty big publisher in Spain who has a lot of connections in the Spanish markets, I'm hoping it's done before the end of the year!

Congratulations with the overseas success of the book.
Unscripted is a great read and the philosophy and methods in the book are lightbulb moments. Is very rare to see that in a book, so it is understandable it is working as a Productacrecy.

Interesting that it comes with a different cover for Korean than original :)
