I was wondering which is your preferred portal to learn new skills/knowledge. I have used in the past Udemy and Coursera, right now I am using Lynda.com because I have a free subscription from University and found it really good however the "getting your hands dirty" element is missing.

Do you have any ideas of other portals or ways to make e learning more effective? And how do you do to avoid "mental masturbation"(just learn for the sake of learning)?

This. Experience is the best teacher. Breakdown your problem into smaller parts and solve them 1 at a time. If you're stuck, use google to help.

If you want a free solution go to Khan Academy. I use Udemy.com for most of my learning plus they have regular $10 course offers. Sign up to their newsletter.
