Hi fellow fastlaners,

I just finished reading TFM yesterday and am excited to put MJ's advise to practice.

I apolpgize in advance for any grammar and spelling mistakes as English is not my first language.

I am considering to set up a forum for German speaking solopreneurs and wantrapreneurs on motivation and productivity as my fastlane and would appreciate any tips and input on this idea.

  • Did anyone also start a forum from scratch?
  • Is there a pre-existing tread that I didn't find?
  • Is it ok to start a forum, even when you are not THE expert (yet) on the topic?
  • Any good advise on software, hosting plans etc?
  • Which are the pros and especially the cons of starting and maintaining a forum?
  • Are there typical pitfalls?

Thanks!

  • "Is it ok to start a forum, even when you are not THE expert (yet) on the topic?"
Firstly, you need to master your craft. In MJ's book, he says "the best quarterbacking advice comes from Peyton Manning, not MJ DeMarco."

Basically, the best productivity advice can only come from you if only you're a productivity expert.

Thanks, I appreciate clear and honest feedback.

I don't consider a forum a business -- I consider it a tool to SUPPORT the business.

I was considering to use a forum as a tool to get in touch with my target group, discover needs and build an audience. However, reading the thread that @Andy Black linked, set me straight again.

I am now considering to write a 50 - 80 pages kindle book on a topic I consider myself an expert in and where I have some quite controversial viewpoints which I think could help many people.

Inside the book, I would encourage readers to send me questions and feedback via email to improve the book, building up an email list this way and hopefully helping me to address my readers pain points better in a second edition or through other means, including maybe a forum one day :)

Any thoughts on this?

Have you read @MJ DeMarco's book?

Firstly... fair play to you for taking the constructive criticism, giving thanks, acting on it, being big enough to change your mind, and coming back with an iteration already.

Secondly, before you write your book, why don't you see if you can already help people with what you know?

FIND a forum where people you can help hang out.

Help them.

See what works and what doesn't.

Get their common objections and sticking points.

Go out of your way to help people.

See if you can last more than a month doing it.

Helping people and you're in it for the long haul? Sounds like you could be onto something. Now you just need to work out how to get paid for helping people.

Listen to this call I had with @TedM:

Actually I don't necessarily agree with this entirely.

If you are trying to master the craft at writing, I see no problem starting a forum on writing.

If you are trying to master options trading, I see no problem starting a forum on it.

I only take issue when someone portrays themselves as a guru -- I once went to an option seminar some years ago where the presenter was selling his strategy. At the end of the presentation I asked him (in front of everyone) how much of his own money he invested in the system. He said "I don't invest our own money - we consult." Ahhh, so your strategy is so great, you don't use your own money? Got it champ.

@Andy Black Thanks for the link and the nice feedback. I guess taking on feedback or choachability is a virtue when you hang out with people that have more experience and success than you.

Thanks for your clarification @MJ DeMarco. I like your guru anecdote which I also remember from the book and have experienced myself many times in varying degrees and styles. Sometimes I am a bit guilty of this myself, as I am a person that best retains information by teaching others what I just learned. At times this can be quite annoying for others - ask my wife :)

I haven't dumped the forum idea entirely yet, but will take my time to evaluate more lanes. Any tips and resources on how to start and populate a forum pre launch are still highly appreciated.

Hey, firstly, welcome to the forum, and well I've seen you have gotten an awakening that set you straight about how we assist people by being straightforward with particular issues on the forum.

In the book TMF , MJ speaks a lot about Process-Process-Process-Process which eventually leads to the Event we look forward to. However, this process aspect is the part where we learn, take action, make mistakes, learn lessons, make more mistakes, learn lessons and based on the trials and errors we gain the opportunity to perfect what we are building/launch.

Do not get me wrong, we DO assist each other on the forum in all areas, that's the reason for the forum to assist and share our experiences which helps elevate each other. However, a huge part of any success story is the process. The fact you are asking the questions (which are cool) shows you are interested in getting started, but don't forget that it is equally worthy of us to go out and learn and then create successful businesses based on what we learn, it also prepares us better to take on any other aspect of life/build additional successful businesses.

Hey Matt,

Just wanted to offer some feedback I didn't hear in anyone else's responses.

What is your vision for your forum? What are some unique features or aspects of it? How will you use it to provide some unique value to the market you wish to serve? And what is your end goal with it?

Hard to offer any critique or advice when your idea is so vague. There's so many forums out there, and so many websites that teach/talk entrepreneur-ism. What makes yours different?

Also, I agree with MJ. As long as you don't present yourself as an expert, you can write on the topic and certainly share your failures and successes. It will make you very relatable, anyway, if your audience are people that trying to hike the path of being an entrepreneur but aren't there yet.
