AndyTalks with TedM about Blogging, Authority, Services, & Sitting on Gold

A couple of days ago Ted PM'd to bounce an idea off me about starting a relationship blog.

We recorded our Skype call for the benefit of other forum members.

(Sorry Ted... in the call I kept thinking you wanted to start a parenting blog. Haha.)

We hope it helps.

@Andy Black - thanks so much for your time and cheerfulness.

It was a great brainstorm session - the amazing idea that I took away - was .... be like Andy :)

Meaning - don't invest time and energy in setting your own blog, etc.... at least not in the beginning. Find fertile ground in an active existing community and jump in. If you can add real value (based on the feedback) and you enjoy the ride - then you can think about leveraging that to your own independent blog. And, you'll have an instant audience to boot (possibly).

Really, a terrific idea and an important contribution to the "reality testing - fail fast" conundrum we all face.

Not a sexy topic but still, +1 for project management posts.

Reminded me of this:

Good point. I'll extract that little bit about project management out of the recording and drop it in here. It cost me €4K to learn that nugget after all.

EDIT: OMG, that video is perfect. It brings back memories of wanting to either throttle someone or poke myself in the eye with a rusty fork. Thanks for sharing @ApparentHorizon

Myself and @TedM Skyped a long time ago about AdWords.

A couple of days ago Ted PM'd to bounce an idea off me about starting a relationship blog.

We decided to record our Skype call in case it could benefit other forum members.

(Sorry Ted... in the call I kept thinking you wanted to start a parenting blog. Haha.)

What's your single biggest takeaway?

I will have to say, I like the longer @Andy Black conversations on Soundcloud. Keep them up!

Thanks @Greg Rutkowski

I will have to say, I prefer doing the longer conversations! They're what I do naturally.

The Snapchat stuff is cool and can be the sand that slips between the rocks and pebbles of my day.

Except I do calls all.the.bleeding.time. I can't stop doing calls. I'm just about to jump onto another call after I post this.

Soooo... why not just document what I'm doing already? It doesn't even add sand into my day. :)

What were your takeaways?

You want to be an authority?

Attach yourself to a "demonstrated traffic-flow".

Instead of writing up a personal blog and after 6 months finding out that nobody cares, go to a related forum.

Share your insights and see how people react.

One more small effort

When doing something you do already anyway, think about how others could benefit from it too.

All those calls would have never became public without that extra effort to record them.

Sometimes, value is so easy to create.

Don't miss out on this.

You know enough!

Everybody has a very unique story.

Even if somebody has similar/the same skills, your story is different.

How many project managers are there? A lot.

How many successful project managers are there that handle their job and 8 (!) kids? VERY FEW!

NEVER question your authority on parenting, if you have 8 kids that do well.

Something that seems like a weakness can be turned into TWIST that makes you special, that makes you stand out. It can be turned into your biggest strength.

What is the most important product you sell?

Your business.

Focus on this. And on this only.

Outsource EVERYTHING else.

Thank you for sharing guys, awesome insights gained!

P.S.: Never forget, people buy from people.

Hi,

My name is Alex. My life is upside down.

Long story short: I live on a couch in a mobile home on my aunt's money about 2.000 kilometers away from home.

I tried blogging twice. Didn't make it cause I'm broke and can't pay the hosting. I wanted to fix my life somehow but didn't know where to turn.

I gave rep to Andy yesterday for one of his awesome posts. After a couple hours, he sent me a PM asking me how things are going. I told him part of my story.

He told me to listen to the podcast in this thread. So I did. It crushed my excuses. Turns out I can start 'blogging' without an actual blog. All I have to do is help people on forums.
  • costs no money (no more "I'm broke" excuse);
  • a forum already has traffic, which makes my job easier;
  • I can later start a profitable blog straight out the box with the audience and content I build on the forum.
It's an awesome idea. One which I could have had too if only I would have asked:

Do I REALLY Need This?
(this headline is something Andy said in the thread called "You don't need a website, you need sales")

Do I REALLY Need a Website/Blog/Hosting Plan?
Nope. I can start helping people with my knowledge on a forum.

It goes to show, you can do anything with nothing if you put your mind to it.
