Adding some English version is actually quite easy on YouTube for the subtitles and captions. I apply it for all of the videos.

If I had to start something else (and that most likely will happen in the future) I'd definitely choose to start right away in English now but I didn't have that in mind and I just wanted to start doing videos in French at that time. But I'm pretty sure it has potential to go faster in English (unless my french accent ruins the quality xD)

And only 230 views after one week, not so bad but I expected a bit more after working so much on it:

- I recorded completely a second time the video to have a less long video and have more rythm
- I spent a lot of time including new features in the editing: 2D to 3D, smoother transitions, more effects
- I proposed an exercice in the video to make it more interactive
- I included a call to click at the end of the video but so far the click rate on the end-screen video is only around 5%

That's a lot of "I" ... looks like I missed the most important: what do viewers want to see. I really thought I had a good / interesting topic this time and presented in a good way so this is why I am quite disapointed right now. For now I need to find another topic and I'll make a shorter video around 5-6 min for the next video. Let's try to improve that!

All they care about is what they get out of the video.

Over the past few months, I released several videos I had spent a lot of time working on. After two weeks, I was lucky if a video hit 1k views, which happened to every video. Even though I knew that I shouldn't take this personally, it was hard. I then rushed out a quick filler video with little thought, and it flew. 10k views in the first few days. I ask because I am wondering how much of this is just a small audience size in general. A lot of tech videos that are tutorials are more long term plays (as more and more people overtime need the same content but not a lot all at once for instance only so many people will be looking in one week on "how to export my linkedin feed to a google sheet" in any given week but over a few years sure you may get a bunch).

I think it can be hard to hit the sweet spot of evergreen content in tech but there are obviously channels that do but they seem more related to higher level languages and not a specific API. Though Google Sheets is big enough that maybe it could work but unlike other language based channels or concept based (full stack web app tutorials, video game tutorials) the people seeking most likely want the specific task at hand rather than to watch assorted content on the topic weekly.

I am also in a phase where the results are quite marginal compared to all the time I spend on it so I would not mind getting some other feedbacks / returns of experience.

So in short, I have started to publish videos 4 months ago after wondering what was the first thing I could do to stop faking action. I am aware a YouTube channel is not reallly following the control law of CENTS but that seemed to be a good first step for me. I am publishing 2 videos / week for these 4 months, in my native language (french) and mainly about the use of Google sheets / Google Apps Script. Why this topic? I think that was just one of the easiest topics to put in place at that time (just need to buy a microphone and make a video from my screen).

So after 4 months, I am getting a few results but not as much as I hoped. The views are increasing but I am still struggling getting people to subscribe with only 29 subscribers so far (15 in the last 30 days):

View attachment 46850

Rate of clicks:
The rate of clicks does not look so bad, the channel is on 3.3% on average and although it is not an impressive result, I think this is still fair from what I could read on that topic. I am also using TubeBuddy to optimize titles.

Retention of the audience:
I think this is my main issue, videos are usually around 25% (or even lower) and the best is only going up to 50%. I think I should focus more on this part for the upcoming videos and I am trying to put a plan in place to improve this side:

Improving my speaking: it is actually also a reason why I started a YouTube channel and I can hear that I am already improving but I still need to learn more to better keep the focus of the viewers

Improve my video editing and especially the creation of animations / specials effects to compensate for the lack of transitions from this type of video

Make shorter and more impacting introduction

I have also recently tried to make a slightly different type of video talking about HTML. I thought this topic was quite similar but considering the small success of this video, it seems it is already too different from the original topic of my channel so I'll keep that on the side for now.

I will make an update of the status of my channel every month on this thread.
In the meantime, I'd be happy to read your comments and thoughts. If some of you have already tried to start a similar channel, I'd also be happy to read from your experience / results.

Thanks for reading me!

Hi cybom, great to see a fellow youtuber in this forum

in this forum i started a post youtube progress thread for 120 days

and unfortunately i still have 4 subscribers and failed at it

i left youtube now and currently doing freelance youtube script writing

and got some clients too.

my opinion : google sheets have a small target audience and if we go a bit boarder you can make videos on notion and obsidian and other managing tools targeting students.

that could later turn into an a fanbase

For the rest I'll play with transition, zoom in/out etc.

For the base drawing and the animation of eye blinking or other simple movements, I am using OpenToonz

For the mouth syncing, I will use the free tool from Adobe Express (you have a few sets of mouth that you can use with an audio track) and I will add the mouth on the face at the editing stage (with a green screen)

For the editing, I'm considering to switch to CapCut (for regular videos I use DaVinci Resolve) which may be more efficient for shorts from what I could read and test on my side

I may also try later a test with the full version of Adobe for the animation of characters. I tried a few other solutions (easy animation with AI) but couldn't find anything satysfying (most of the tools propose to create a character which is often too complex / I couldn't find a lot of tools allowing to animate in a few click a simple custom character as I want it to be).

That's it for today, thanks for reading and Merry Christmas !

Hello all,

Here is the monthly update.

I haven't updated anything on YouTube this month ... but it looks like it's not really impacting the stats. It's even the opposite, it's progressing quite well currently. Looks like my channel does better without me, aoutch xD

On my side I'm still busy with the creation of the series of shorts with "animated" characters.
I have finished around 25% of them and the 25 following % are prepared, just need to edit them in CapCut.
To create the voices of the different characters, I'm using 11labs to change my voice, the results are quite good to me.

Nothing more to add for this month, I need to finish this preparation and trigger this series of shorts.

Thanks!

Hello all,

Quick update for this month.
The shorts are finally ready to start being released (2 per day for 1 month) starting the 5th March ... so we'll see how it goes, nothing more to add.

All in all this took me way more time than I initially thought but I could make some good progress the latest month.

Thank you.
Next month there will be more!

Hello all,

I haven't done my usual monthly update for 2 reasons, the first one being quite disapointed with the results from the series of shorts (2 x per day during one month on YT, IG and TikTok - 62 shorts on each platform) and the second one being a long trip planned for a while from where I am just back.

Anyway here is the summary of this month of shorts on each platform:

YouTube:

You can see peaks of views of course, the biggest being around 4000 in one day. The main observations are:

After the peak, the number of views is coming back to normal or even less than it was before (which, I must say, may also be due to the seasonality)

The best short tops at 4000 views, not really impressive after 2.5 years on YouTube

Last but not least, I get an incredible amount of dislikes with shorts (more dislikes than likes overall) ... I struggle a bit to understand but that may come from 3 different reasons:

The shorts are in English while most of my videos are in French and that could piss off the subscribers

With this type of format (characters in an office), people are expecting another type of content (fun content) and are disapointed

These videos are really bad and I don't see it

Instagram:

+ 1 new subscriber

Best short: 313 views

The least I can say is there wasn't much success on Instagram and I won't make any more effort there.

TikTok:

+ 16 new subscribers

Best short: 525 views

A bit better than Instagram but still far under my expectations (or... hopes).

So ...what's next with Produplification (the channel/brand)?

There are the few things I will continue/start to do:

Try to publish the shorts on RedNote & LinkedIn - there is not much effort required and still interesting to see

Publish some files to sell on dedicated platform - the channel still provides me a tiny bit of income by itself and it's worth checking whether it is possible to increase it a bit by selling specific files... I don't have any hope to get it into something bigger anymore but still better than nothing

I will continue publishing videos from time to time but not pushing as much as before

This will not be my first priority anymore!

As said above, I will continue publishing a video on YouTube from time to time but not with as much effort as before as this won't be my first priority anymore for a few reasons:

Mainly for personal but also professional reasons, I need to speed up with learning a language that is new to me (Dutch)

I'm feeling more and more that I am missing some bigger opportunity with AI ... I'd like to take a step backwards and have a look at which opportunity I could try there (not in the content creation anymore but more the creation of a tool/product)

So that's it for now, I'll keep providing updates on this thread as previously, just less regularly (most likely).
Thank you for reading if you arrived here and sorry for the disapointing outcome ... not all YouTube threads can be as successful as the one from James Jani ... and that's just how it is. Cheers!
